Outstanding video, David. I'll never get tired of watching people catch this song for the first time, especially folks who have a background in music. Speechlessness is definitely an appropriate response to this video and performance.

Larnell flew in and learned this song during the flight.... of course, Cory Henry is blessed by God with all that talent of his. Even played at the Apollo Theater at age 6. Lots of very gifted people here and that brass section is out of this World.

I've been waiting for this reaction. There are other great songs and performances of this level in other genres, including Snarky Puppy - Lingus. I don't know when that will be, but I'm looking forward to the day when the reactions and reviews come.

This is perfect... Simply put... And other tracks on this performance also (Shofukan is my favourite).
Shaun Martin (the keyboard solo hypeman) has some great music released. I love his 7summers album. Great album to just chill out!

Over the years I've been watching you, my playlists have been becoming more and more Jazz, Funk, Fusion, you know it. While it started with John Scofields jiggly Jazz Funk, it really kicked off when a friend studying jazz trombone showed me this exact song when we were hanging out. I was completely blown away, couldn't grasp what happened. I just knew I felt an energy explosion in my mind and body 😂
Btw, IIRC the bassist arranged the whole thing (and then they improvised all over it).

    Fun facts:
    1. Larnell Lewis was a last minute replacement for this recording and learned this ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER.
    2. This band was formed at University of North Texas, a Mecca for jazz musicians for decades.
    3. All the musicians learned their parts from “Logic” midi files, thus no sheet music.
    4. Michael League is the bassist/leader of this group and the song’s composer.
    5. The audience members were all wearing “Silent Disco” bluetooth headphones from the main mixer.
    6. The album “We Like It Here” (which this track is apart) was recorded in The Netherlands.
    7. The keyboard soloist is Cory Henry (who has since left the group) and was a keyboard childhood prodigy.

Got the Thumbs up before I even watched it. Knew you'd have a wonderful reaction and commentary on a song like this.

As a fellow musician you know how music works, all this and that....but sometimes you feel like a little child in a candy shop!
I like musician reactors like Dave. They add always profound new thoughts.
    Great 33 min !

You spoke about the bass player Michael League wrote the song and is the band leader. He is fantastic at finding the correct mix of musicians, there’s about 30 members in rotation of Snarky Puppy and many of them have their own bands.

Mr. Heretic! Finally got to this one! This entire album was recorded live, which is why there were so many people there. They wanted the entire session to be totally immersive, so that is why you had a lot of people there as well as certain instruments laying out, as they were used in other tracks in the recording of the album. With Larnell, it was already mentioned that he flew in for this recording. What happened here is that this was recorded in the Netherlands, and the band invited people in to experience the live recording. Their scheduled drummer had some issues (I believe with his passport) so he wasn't able to attend. Larnell was called in, and he learned and created his drum parts on the flight from Canada to the recording session. He picked up all of that and with rehearsals, nailed the recording in that single take.
Other than that, you caught nearly everything we were hoping you would have caught!

I would like to recommend a cult British psychedelic prog-punk band called Cardiacs, who were in existence from the late 70s until the 2000s when their driving force, Tim Smith, suffered a stroke which left him paralysed from the neck down and effectively ended the band. They combine a variety of musical styles to create their own unique sound which is often manic with many a musical handbrake turn. Two tracks come to mind to check out: Fiery Gun Hand, which is a rollercoaster ride in the second part including a demented guitar solo, and Will Bleed Amen, which is another break-neck white knuckle experience with more time signature changes than you can shake a stick at. The only reason this Snarky Puppy track made me think of them is the wtf factor of what you've just listened to.

Their song "what about me" is another banger you gotta react to....on a bit of sad news the keyboardist next to cory passed away in august.

Only 1 minute in.. And I've gotta comment already!
I think I'm the douche that made you put that disclaimer at the beginning of your videos (We had it out, you and me, a couple of years ago. About a TOOL song, I believe) but I've got no fear this time. I'm pretty confident you've never witnessed this performance before and, knowing your taste and knowledge of complex music, I'm almost certain you will enjoy it.
    Cheers!
