At the time of this album, Rickie was in a relationship with Tom Waits, and they were both friendly with Chuck E Weiss, [ he had introduced them ] another local musician. All three lived at the Tropicana Motel. At this time, a lot of the stories surrounding Waits , Jones & Weiss are part historic fact, part myth. One of the hottest songs of the 70’s, and one if the last great songs of the 70’s, always one of my favorites! Nice to see you guys finally discovering this gem 💎! A much have in everyone’s collection and playlist! I bet y’all heard this at the” Drugsstow” or the supermarket! 😄😄😄
She's a hold-over from the Beat Generation. Her style at the time (late 70s) was mimicking her boyfriend, Tom Waits. You should play his music, "Waltzing Matilda", "Looking For the Heart of Saturday Night and Jersey Girl".
Her album “Pirates” is a desert island disc… amazing all the way through… I recommend We Belong Together and Living It Up off that one. Her EP “Girl at her Volcano” showcases her jazzy side in small piano bar atmosphere with a very cool crowd. But the strangest thing I discovered when I moved from NY to Australia is that a lesser known hit of hers “The Horses” is a HUGE pub singalong song down here, as it was covered by Aussie Daryl Braithwaite. Most people down here think it’s his original, so I love introducing everyone in Oz to Rickie Lee Jones.
Rickie Lee is outrageously talented. Plays multiple instruments and still singing this as beautifully today! She's on tour now! It's her on guitar in this one - the little riff is hers.
Ricki Lee Jones is one of the most unique female artists. Super talented. Grew up on the streets and sings with that street slang that is so unique. Saw her in concert and was blown away.
Rickie Lee Jones! So cool, so laid back, "Woody and Dutch on a slow train to Peking", is a snappy foot tapper, "Company", is heart wrenchingly wistful, and Young Blood" is a vibe! ... love me some Rickie Lee Jones!❤❤❤
She is still performing and is currently touring. In her career she has written for other artists, for herself and has written for TV and movies. She has a unique vocal style and phraseology. , being dubbed, "The Queen of Coolsville." Her debut album took the music world by storm and this song was played non-stop on the radio where I lived. Love this song. So many memories.
Giggled every time you said Chucky's in love knowing it was Chuck E's in love. Always wondered what the E stood for. Ricky Lee 's lineage has helped her with having musical styles of rock, R&B, pop, soul and jazz... She is named after her dad, Richard Jones, who was a singer, songwriter and trumpet player. His parents were vaudevillian who sang, played music, dance, acrobatics and comedy. Ricky Lee started by singing traditional jazz in coffee houses and bars.
I remember hearing this when it first hit...IT WAS FIRE!! Loved her voice, her style and she had vocal styling on the same line as Joni Mitchell, who was amazing in her right. Nora Jones sounds a little like this with her style, and I love her voice also.
I would say that Ms. Rickie Lee Jones's sound is more of a combination of Sheryl Crow & Norah Jones imho! Great reaction Jay & Amber and as always Love, Peace & Blessings!!!
Chicago's very own, Rickie Lee Jones. She now lives in New Orleans. Last Chance Texaco is also great. She has a great duet with John Mellencamp, Between a Laugh and a Tear.
Love this one, but my favorites from Rickie are the haunting and somber Coolsville, Last Chance Texaco, and the gorgeous but overlooked deep cut from this album called Company. Any of these will showcase a very different side from the light ,upbeat number you just listened to.
This song always makes me think of a good childhood friend named Chuck. It was popular while we were in grade school and my friends and I used to sing this to him all the time! Great memories!
Her early albums were amazing! Her songwriting is inspirational. Great musicians behind her too Her songs were hard to describe but never boring. She had one of the best inventive, artistic and cool concerts I've ever seen in my life. And she is still an artist that I still enjoy choosing to listen to.
You guys need to listen to a tune called "Little Fluffy Clouds" by a group called The Orb. In it, they sampled some of the recorded comments that Rickie Lee Jones gave during an interview and then created most of the lyrics in the song using the samples. Almost the entire song is composed of samples and became sort of a cult hit. Sort of pissed her off and her label almost sued them for unauthorized use of her voice but they paid them and stayed out of court. Wikipedia has an interesting entry on the song.
I'm glad that you'all finally caught up with Rickie Lee... a few other gems of her's are Night Train,Danny's AllStar Joint,We Belong Together,Living It Up arejust a few..She cameon the scene in 1979 but I think of her more as an 80's version ofJoni Mitchell
The song is about Chuck E Weiss - part time musician, club owner (he was Johnny Depp’s partner in The Viper Room), hustler, and poet, that Rickie knew through her boyfriend at the time, Tom Waits. Chuck passed away a little less than 2 years ago, July 20, 2021.
As a Rocker THROUGH & THROUGH, I was so glad that you both reacted to THIS song. Truly one of those GREATEST SONGS in musical history. Not only did it BREAK THROUGH the "proverbial glass ceiling" when it was released (the '70 music scene was electic, to say the least), but musically, to combine folk, classic rock, r-n-b, AND jazz (Ahem).. Rickie Lee Jones was AHEAD of the game. I just LOVE the bassline... so GROOVY!!!! Peace, Love, & Liberty. Go Cincinnati Bengals!!!!
I'm with you, Amber. The '70s was my fav as well. Hippy music, Metal, Funk, Folk, Disco boom-clap club, Punk, New Wave, Yatch Rock, etc. Even Hip Hop & Rap started in the '70s!
This song was AMAZING, especially when it came out. It was SO original, unlike anything at the time!

A whole generation grew up on this song in the 70's! Brilliant jazz/blues vocals!
I agree with Amber; the 70's was the best decade for music.
One of the coolest singers ever. 😎
I’m SO happy you liked Rickie Lee! I love her voice and vocal stylings!
Danny's All Star Joint.......should be next Ricky Lee
70’s was the best musical decade since it was the last decade with real musicians playing real instruments.
Lots of love for Miss Rickie Lee Jones. Check out her duet with Dr. John from the "Sleepless in Seattle" soundtrack called "Makin' Whoopee."
Rickie Lee Jones - Last Chance Texaco.
Last Chance Texaco is my favorite, it is hauntingly beautiful, and full of metaphors.
Unexpectedly saw her at the New Orleans jazz festival in '91. What a treat!
Absolutely fabulous singer songwriter
I absolutely love Rickie Lee Jones, she's my all time favorite ❤
You have to play Danny's All Star Joint! Love Rickie Lee.
Agree with Amber, I'm a 70's girl and miss how diverse the music of that era was. I guess that's why I love reactions to 70's songs so much!
Oh what a song, considering the times! If you haven’t dipped into her mentor,Tom Waitts, you’ve got a treat coming!
Peace
What a song takes me back to my teenage years lots of individual styles of music those days being in love at school brilliant
Rickie Lee is outrageously talented. Plays multiple instruments and still singing this as beautifully today! She's on tour now! It's her on guitar in this one - the little riff is hers.
DANNYS ALL STAR JOINT! An amazing groovy song
I Love how you BOTH did the Amber sway almost immediately!
I’d forgotten how dang good this song is. Thanks
I have always loved this song.
Rickie Lee Jones does such a great vocal on this. One of my all time favorites!!!
How cool is Rickie Lee! She did a unbelievable cover of Walk Away Renee and The Beatles song For No One. Such a talent.
How fun!! Love RIckie Lee!! Have a Flashy Friday!!
I was a kid when this came out, and was blown away by Rickie Lee Jones. She is awesome.
I would say that Ms. Rickie Lee Jones's sound is more of a combination of Sheryl Crow & Norah Jones imho! Great reaction Jay & Amber and as always Love, Peace & Blessings!!!
Never thought of that but agree adding Cheryl Crow with Norah.
I thought Sheryl Crowe too.
I have ADORED this song for decades!
This is one of those songs that, when you hear her voice, you fall in love with her!!
Man, I love her music, and have so for decades. Thanks so much for featuring it here. Cheers!
She has a smooth swing vibe going through this whole album, interesting adventure she was on at the time, can't be repeated. One of my faves ❤
I remember the first time I saw RLJ on SNL promoting this single, man what a great time to be alive.
Everything she does is well worth checking out, alot of cool stuff ahead for you guys....
? I’m having trouble with this math 😮
