This was a fantastic video. This is an example where one person who cares can do more on their own than "official journalists". Also, I would love to play a new Homeworld game that's similar to the original Wing Commander games! Heck yeah Relic, or Black Bird Interactive!

I had the pleasure to go down to Vancouver for one of their yearly Relic Fanfests one year, where I got to meet the developers, had a tour of the studio, and even received a signed copy of Company of Heroes! One thing I vividly remember about this trip (this was around 2005ish, just after CoH came out), was their art for a game they didn't announce the name for. Although I and the other fans knew _exactly_ what it was for, the developers were mum about it. My guess was an intended Homeworld 3. Shame that they never got to finish it until decades later.

No maligned sequel? I remember people bitching incessantly about HW2 being too hard, the switch from the resource gatherers being your repair ships instead of having dedicated repair ships. To a degree they were correct but I think they were blown out of proportion. Though I still much prefer the original in just about every way. The story was less pretentious as there was an over abundance of "The McGuffins." Honestly, besides looking more beautiful, my favourite thing about HW2 was how they had fighters/corvettes as squads which helped tidy up the production of your ships substantially.

Homeworld Catsclysm is perhaps the most underrated "spin off" of any rts-series.
It introduced many of the functions that would go on to homeworld 2 like modules and the coupling of ships.

      It's RTS playfield.
Guys at Relic are actually taking risks that no one else would. Jumping in into an almost dead genre, that only attempts to reiterate the "good ol times". They have balls the size of battlecruisers... and experience bigger than most AAA studios could muster.
Most RTS games are seen as "clones" of the old way of things, can't be easily filled with microtransaction stuff - they're not the favourite games of xcell warriors and board members. They're actually something they're totally afraid of. And old Relic is at it, possibly bringing back the whole genre to life.

Hey, nice to see some Homeworld stuff here. And with what seems to be a great quality editing.
I haven´t finished it yet, just reached the Homeworld 2 segment. But, I was surprised by the absence of a Cataclysm section and it being branded as an "expansion".
While originally Cataclysm was meant to be an expansion, it released as a full fledged game. In fact its campaign is the longest one in the series, with 19 missions. I personally think it's a better sequel than Homewrold 2 and consider it as my favourite in the saga. Sadly, being a follow up made by another developer, its perceived status as a pseudo expansion and the lack of a remaster makes it one of the most ignored entries in the series.
So, please, whenever you start the review of Homeworld saga titles, don't ignore it.

I spent 10000's of hours playing the original homeworld online, until they finally took the WON servers offline. This game saved my life, no joke. If it wasn't for this game and some of the people I met while playing it I would not be here today.
When I first heard that they were remastering it you couldn't imagine how excited I was, getting together with some of my old mates to play it for the first time I could not contain my excitement.
So you could imagine my disappointment when we finally started to play to find this wasn't a remaster at all. I still don't know whose decision it was to do this but they ported the homeworld 1 game to the much inferior homeworld 2 engine, it couldn't have been worse if they tried!
It didn't take long until no one was logging in anymore, if they had just pasted some pretty graphics over the top of the original I guarantee there would still be a decent head count even today.
Having such an emotional attachment to the original game made this hurt more than it probably should, even to this day it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I hope more from homeworld 3, but I will not hold my breath.

Just to point out as a correction to the video @Zade, that while Homeworld: Cataclysm was ORIGINALLY planned to be an expansion to the original Homeworld, it became its own stand-alone title.
I am gonna be honest and say something that might seem controversial, but I think Cataclysm is much better than the original, especially in the story department but also in gameplay. Not to say that the original was bad, not by a long shot! But the whole "exiled race making their journey back to reclaim their birthright." is not exactly the most original.
And yes I know neither is "ancient evil aliens being released on the galaxy" is not original either. But it did give us something that I can't think I have never seen before or since in the RTS genre: the world's first (and to my knowledge only) RTSHS "Real-Time Survival Horror Strategy" game. The idea of combining the "persistent fleet" and limited resources gameplay of the original, along with a foe that can, except for the VERY largest (and most expensive) ships in your arsenal, easily add your ships to that of your enemy.

You speak of Cataclysm as if you had never played it. Honestly, that standalone "expansion" (its a just a brand new game campaign in the same engine) nails the tone and setting of Homeworld 1 way better than Homeworld 2 did, and it is a great game of its own. It somehow makes "Survival Horror RTS" work, which is an incredible feat.

@@Zade_95 gameplay wise, it's just as clunky as HW1 (same engine, same interface taking you out of the game screen to build or research) and the new ship class and mechanics are nothing to write home about. But the story and writing is way, way better than it has any right to be given this was an outsourced cashgrab of sorts.
It keeps the universe grounded, even when facing the unknown. It avoids the predestination traps HW2 retconed the series into, and really gets the "alone, in the dark" feel HW1 thrived in when you waited patiently while your resourcers harvested in silence every last bit of RUs after you cleaned the area of enemies, not because you wanted the money, but because the lives of everyone in that ship were valuable, and you didn't wanted to fail them.
In my opinion, the writing team in Catalyst did a way better job than HW2s. By far.
It being not canon is a disgrace. The fact that it was not remastered, a crime.

I don’t game so much on my PC anymore but the late 90s till the middle 2000s really put out some epic titles that I still go back to now and then. Homeworld and Cataclysm (now Emergence, so dumb) were some of the best times I had on a computer. 2 was ok. Wish the story was better developed and included Cataclysm into the narrative. It would’ve clashed with the direction they wanted to go I guess.
Extragalactic exploration would’ve been a more interesting route as the story from 1 and Cataclysm felt more cohesive from part 2. That was the origin of the Beast infection according to the Bentusi and I was curious to see that storyline progressed further.

20:43 the reason why it's basically no is because Unity like Unreal Engine don't have a builtin modding solution... "big deal, technically neither does hand-made engines" I hear you say. True but integrating it in one or the other isn't the same endeavor and in Unity in particular you have to expand quite a lot of foresight, planning and effort to externalize all method calls and stats into a scripting language that won't be part of the compilation and be loaded at runtime. It's something I wager can easily add 1-2 years to the dev cycle.

    • @Alahmnat
      @Alahmnat Рік тому +1

True, it does require planning and forethought, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Cities: Skylines for example was also built in Unity, and there are literally hundreds of mods for it on the Steam workshop that can change virtually every aspect of the game's systems, visuals, and controls. It all ultimately depends on implementation and intent, which isn't all that different from the challenges of mod support in a hand-rolled engine. If BBI is being honest about knowing how important mods and community creations are to the franchise's player base, I have to imagine they're building with that in mind (especially since it's way more efficient for development to build with mods in mind than to try and ram mod support in as an afterthought at the end), but just don't want to unintentionally over-promise anything.

    • @arcdecibel9986
      @arcdecibel9986 Рік тому

Totally agree. The story was so much more compelling, with the Somtaaw being great protagonists for the role, and the Beast being an absolutely terrifying antagonist. It's one thing to just lose units in an RTS. Regrettable, sure, and I do my best to avoid losing any units as a personal choice more than strategy. But to have them turned against you is far worse, especially considering what the lore says the Beast does to your people. Truly, OMG. You better believe we were EXTREMELY cautious at all times, which just added to the atmosphere, an atmosphere where it made perfect sense to name ships after religious concepts and offices.
By contrast, I don't even really remember what Makaan wanted or why. I think he wanted his space barbarians to get the three hyperspace cores for some reason, presumably domination of some kind, but I don't know how he even got the force he had since he repeatedly got his ass kicked so hard.

Star Wars Empire at War and it's 2nd game would have been awesome if it was more like Homeword with it's 3D world view and movement, the ability to have ships move change position in 4D plane ex: up, down, forward, backward, horizontally, latterly, slide side to side and vertical up n down and axis/zero point turn. Do expect Homeword 3 to be as bigger more immersive as the pervious game can't wait to hear Ship ready for launch.

The greatest thing of Homeworld 2 was it's huge and extremely active modiing community that was keeping it alive and constantly improving it. A moding community that fall victim to almost Microsoft-ish EEE (embrace, expand, extinguish) attack from Gearbox. Unfortunately what IP owners want from their titles is predictable income, not cult status, so I am pretty sure in 3 we will see again things like Steam vendorlocking, tool inavaliability and moding-unfriendly design. And those who just iked Homeworld, but really loved it's mods will have to continue playing the 20 years old Relic game long after Homeworld 3 is considered end of live product by Gearbox sales...

I haven't played too much of the newer remake Homeworld games because it seemed "a bit off" compared to the originals. One big thing I noticed was that the "spherical" formation doesn't seem to work properly. In the original I used this formation to protect important ships, but in the new game the selected units can't seem to surround a key unit at all. Also using the space Tugs to capture enemy ships feel more of a pain in the ass then I remembered. Is it just me?

I was really emotionally invested in the original Homeworld game back in the late 90s. I remember forsaking sleep on many work nights because I just HAD to help Karan S'jet and last remaining Hiigarans get back to their home world. I worked very hard to try to save every colony pod and capital ships, because they were PRECIOUS remnants of a noble and desperate race! Dammit, I was going to get everyone back to their home world!
Oh, man and that indescribable joy when a group of dirty upstart tug ships managed to steal an enemy dreadnought for the first time, great times! *sobs*

    Hey Zade,
I can see you're upping your production value, looks great.
You could definitely benefit from better microphone audio, you have a nice voice and would sound really good/authoritive with a nice microphone and appropriate processing.
It's hard to tell, looks like you might be wearing a lapel microphone - they're OKAY but maybe you could consider using a fairly inexpensive Rode shotgun microphone just out of frame pointed at your face.
If you need help selecting the right kind of microphone and some pointers on how to process your vocals nicely let me know, I'd be happy to help.

Haha yes I 100% agree. I was wearing a lapel however the audio you were hearing was from a Zoom H1 hidden behind the monitor. Neither were ideal and it sounded kinda scuffed. The usual mic I use (Rode NT into my PC) wasn't able to be used for this video. I am looking to pick up another mic for live action filming like this - I'm considering the Diety D3 Pro as I can easily use it for videography stuff too. Any other suggestions? Well 🤔
I kinda still remember about that _'significant'_ drop of HW2 popularity than the HW1 was, according from the community, due to the the implementation of _'accuracy RNG/range table'_ : in HW1, there was no RNG, so (smaller) ships literally have to evade/avoid the bullets (hence *Evasion* mechanic worked pretty well).
Personally I kinda hate both HW2 and any HW-Rem due to 2 trivial functions were removed from HW1: 'switchable-in-game music function in Skirmish' and 'no more recoil from large guns'...
However, I am so in love with the updated HW1 that came free with the HW-Rem pack: BBI actually updated the game with that from the _'Cataclysm/Emergence'_ .....the bridge-view mode.
