Glad I found this. I'm brand new to the VW world. Just 5spd swapped my 04 BEW wagon, got to finally start it tonight and wouldn't ya know it, my donor car's trans gets stuck in 5th and 5th is noisy. It's still on jackstands at the moment and everything else works so I'll be pulling that cover tomorrow after work. It's been a fun project with the wiring and recoding my ECM but id really rather not have to swap that trans already. Lol
@CoolAirVw great site. I appreciate that. Still haven't pulled the cover. I'm still buttoning up a few other things but I did do the shifter adjustment and finally got a chance to drive it and all is well but it definitely sticks in 5th. I can pull it out pretty easily by grabbing the linkage but it ain't moving with the shifter.
Thanks again! Do you have the torque values on those: Gear bolts, gear carrier, "5th Adjustment plate" bolt, and case cover bolts? or where can we find them?
Mine was going fine until yesterday I was on the highway and the shifter went from 5th to neutral. I noticed that when I put 5th and accelerate, the shift knob get pushed back as I accelerate until it jumps to neutral. That didn't happened with any other gear. Completed the few kilometers left on my trip in 4th gear at a lower speed. The same happened last year and that time it was on the ongoing trip and did the trip back (300 km) on that condition and ruined the gearbox. This is another one and I can't believe it has the same failure just a year after. That time was a broken output shaft seal, can it be the same thing again?
1st I would worry that your trans is low, 2nd the hub and slider wear and cause that scenario. the broken output shaft seal probably made it low and destroyed the box.

Hi, I stripped out all my 02z box recently ( similar enough set up) and even though I was careful enough to log and video all my steps....I forgot to mark the 5th gear adjustment plate position🙈...Is there any way to put it back in the right position, or do you have any tips ? Thanks and love this vid
@@mistasoulsnatcher7402 If the splines are stripped then its gonna require removal of the trans from the car and extensive disassembly to fix. I have one here like that right now.

shop manual. Not every bolt on a car gets torqued with a torque wrench. sometimes it just gets tightened. Mechanics intuition is what I call it.

01192 is very commonly caused by Valve body. Your "brutal" sensation 2-3 is a bind up which could be solenoids,, valve body or internal trans problem.

What's the prices look like. I looked in 5th cover no metal but the single gear on right is sloppy

The fifth gear area takes a different oil? Should that be changed regularly? I assume you pull the cover off to drain as shown? Where do you fill it?
No. Just one fill for the trans on the transmission in this video.
It uses the same oil… just not enough of it
