At last! I was amazed by the fact that every commentary I read didn't mention that Will was genuinely laughing at Chris' joke; then Jada leans to him - and I suppose she probably said something in the line of "Are you gonna let him talk like that about me?" (which, by the way, is a very old-fashioned and sexist thing to say...), and THEN he gets up and assaults Chris.
I like Ricky's level of insight here. Actually shows empathy.
I think that's the thing - Ricky (and Chris) have no real malice in their humour, they're joking the same way you would with friends. I mean, if your brother fell over in the street, would you sob at your beloved family member's misfortune...or laugh uncontrollably and point in his direction?

But if they did arrest him and went on to announce him as the winner, it wouldn't had been as bad as him being allowed to go on stage to win. It was all planned, smith had deserved to win an academy for Pursuit of Happyness, but they had to give it to forest whitaker. So they overcompensated for will this time.
Will had literally a million ways to go about it AS HE WALKED UP STAGE, he still has time even then. He could talk some smack back on Chris's mic, pretend to threaten him, some body comedy, or even just straight up say that's not cool, yet he chose violence. His brain just froze there.

Actually thats very true but very, very hard in the moment especially if Chris keeps constantly taking pot shots at your family as he has done for years and if you saw your mother getting attacked by your father as a child and you stood there and did nothing. It's definitely a better response but I would have reacted similarly to Chris. I can't stand Chris and his treatment of black women.

The way Chris handled it was truly professional.
First time I saw it, I actually thought it was fake and staged. Something didn't look right about it. The reason for it ... the lead up ... the slap ... the reaction ... the aftermath ... it all seemed weird.
And the fact that social media went absolutely mental ... I genuinely thought it was a planned publicity stunt. Still unsure.

How and why would it be staged? It’s basically decimated Will Smith’s career and he’s got a 10 year ban from the Oscars. Chris rock handled it perfectly. A good example, not everything needs an equal rise against it. You can be better and rise above it. That is why Chris has gained infinite respect while will lost all of it. Chris did not cry out or get mad, he won by laughing. This is why comedy shouldn’t change, we can be better and stronger, not weak and react to every little thing.
The fact that Will Smith is even allowed to continue to receive Oscars was pretty much the end of me watching the Oscars.

I don't think it was soft because Chris looked genuinely shocked and his hands moved to an aggressive position. But not as hard as it looked. I think Will did as much as he thought he could get away with. Then over did it with the shouting and swearing (Would have gotten away with it publicly otherwise as it would have looked like it was part of the act) He knew Chris was the host and would get into serious trouble if he had knocked Chris to the ground, or his jaw or cheek bone was so sore that he could barely talk.

Ricky is quite brilliant. I didn’t realize before recently as I hadn’t really checked out his work so much. But this is a spot on assessment imo.
2 years later and I still can't believe Smith did that. He literally lost the respect of millions and screwed his career in about 10 seconds. He will be remembered now, not for his acting or charisma or motivational and inspirational persona but for that slap.

I was actually glad this happened because that standing ovation basically sent the message to the rest of us that the Hollywood elites are truly a bunch of disconnected and dysfunctional clowns. Hopefully next years Oscars have even worse ratings.

Very good point. Yes, not enough diversity amongst the Oscar nominees was his beef. Irony is Smith was seen laughing immediately after Rock’s joke, saw his wife’s reaction and felt he had to react to defend her honour. From the guy who played Muhammed Ali, it wasn’t much of slap. Rock stayed on his feet and it was Smith who came out of the whole episode with his reputation tarnished while Rock gained more sympathy.
And this oscars had the first all black production team, which clearly was a diabolical decision as they allowed him to stay in the venue and applauded him

Never has a man needed to leave a woman more than Will needs to leave Jada and I know deep down he hates that. He's been stuck between breaking up his family which I believe for many reasons is something he would and has done just about anything to avoid and living a life that's frankly unhealthy and humiliating. Can you imagine living that life in the public eye? There's only so much anyone can stand even if you're so rich and famous you're allowed to be that messed up and above the law of decency. I hope they get to a better place, and I wish Tyler Perry would be frank with both of them. He knows better and is in a position to reach out.

It was more than a throw away joke, it was layered if people remember the original comments about Demi and what was happening in her marriage at the time Rock knew what he said but expected no comeback.
The Will Smith slap was the funniest thing I have ever seen at the Oscars. I hope it becomes an Oscars tradition where somebody is slapped every year.
Ricky is the first one I've heard to understand the reaction from the audience. I was so bewildered by the whole thing the rest of the show just seemed to go by in a blur. I still wasn't sure if it was real after the shouting because IT'S WILL SMITH. Probably the last actor you'd expect to do something like that.

Thing is…a slap is hardly an ‘angry man’ response! If Smith was genuinely infuriated he’d have balled up his fist and put Chris on the floor…so did Smith realise he was out of order even before unleashing the slap? I think so. He already knew he’d over reacted as he walked to the stage, but then felt committed and that he had to do something aggressive. What he should have done when he knew this, was stop, laugh it off and go back to his seat. The real villain here tho’ was Jada….she sent him to bite like a security hound with a single disapproving glance….just prior to that Smith was laughing too!

Jada puts everything about their life on display. If you watch their videos , you’ll quickly understand why he did what he did. Smith knew that he would rather take the disapproval from the world than face Jada’s wrath. I actually feel sorry for him after seeing how he’s been treated. Still does not excuse what he did to Chris Rock. I can’t imagine the humiliation of being assaulted in front of the world. That’s a scar he will carry for the rest of his life.

Here's how I think it went down:
1) Will was having personal problems with Jada. The last thing he needed was her getting moody that night over a joke.
2) When Will heard the GI Jane joke, he went into "deer in headlights" mode. We've all been there. You don't know what to do, only that you think you should act.
3) Will walked up to Chris Rock to perhaps do some play fight thingy. But when he got there, he was too pissed off to go through with the joke and so he lashed out with the slap instead. Or perhaps he hit harder than he thought he would and realised this wouldn't be taken as a joke. either way, something went wrong at this moment.
4) Realising he crossed a line, Will went into "double down" mode. I'm very sure he regretted the slap immediately, but an apology at that stage would have been extremely awkward. So his brain decided to shout out, so as to tell everyone he did it because he was hurt.
5) Jada wouldn't have wanted Will to act out in violence. Why would she want that negative attention? I think she thought it was going to be a jokey roughing up at first, like everyone else did.
I'm sure everyone involved would have done things differently had they had the time again. Adrenaline makes us do stupid things sometimes and for that, I am a little sympathetic to Will Smith. But I still think he should have been kicked out and not received a standing ovation.
Umm... Will Smith knows how to deal with "good". He's been a huge celebrity since his youth and his career and status has grown by leaps and bounds throughout his life. So it wasn't his inability to handle the pressure of the potential Oscar (although I believe that many of them already know before the winner is revealed, so their surprise is just another act). It looks like it was the explosive combination of his tenuous relationship with Jada and his tremendous ego that were ignited by the alcohol in his system when he realized his wife wasn't laughing along with him and the rest of the crowd. So his base caveman brain flipped into "damage control" mode and Chris Rock was a "safe" target. Will Smith got up and put on a show, which happens to be his area of expertise. Don't forget, this isn't the real world. This is Hollywood...
