    i believe that H. is about his son. His son's birth is forcing him to look at a literal part of himself and he's being confronted with his closed heart. his child seems to provoke this need for him to be a better person, to not be fearful anymore, and that the love he feels from his son connects them on almost a spiritual level and that his son's love is "considerately killing" his ego.
    something like that. any fellow Toolheads want to add to this, please do.

      @SMAC-wv5rw Рік тому +25

      I really lilke this interpretation. I have studied these lyrics for over 20 years and leaned toward the idea that it was about his son but could never make sense of the "considerately killing me" line. I never thought of it in the way that it could mean considerately killing his ego or his old self.. THANKS!!

    • @atheontimesconflux7006
      @atheontimesconflux7006 Рік тому +16

      @@SMAC-wv5rw I’ve also always leaned towards the idea that the song was about Maynard’s son. When it came to the “considerately killing me” line, I personally saw that as a realization that as great as having a child is, there’s the side of it where your literally throwing your life away to raise your child and stress over wether or not they’ll grow up into someone healthy and respectable.
      Though ultimately it will be something nothing else comes close to, I see the line as a dark truth to the welcomed cost of your progeny.
      Though I do think the “considerably killing the ego” interpretation has a bit more merit.

    Tool is so esoteric about the meanings of their lyrics and such, it's always understandable when someone thinks this song is about heroin, especially if it's their first time hearing it.
    After hearing that this was, in fact, about his son, and the feeling of being a parent, it seems plain as day to me when I go back and read the lyrics, and listen to the sincerity and Maynard's voice. Especially, when he sings the repeating refrain of "I don't mind." The sacrifices we make for our children, however big or small, always feel like no big thing, when we see those precious smiles on their faces. Knowing, somewhere in their heart of hearts, that they are everything to us.
    That being said, I'm sure Maynard steadfastly employed his usual method of being just vague enough that the song could be about 10 different things.

    Dude... H has been one of my favorite songs for 25 years ❤ When I was a kid I heard a bootleg concert album where he introduced the song. He said "have you ever seen those cartoons where the character has to make a decision, and he has an angel pop up on one shoulder and a devil on the other. The angel's gonna try and get him to do what's good for him and the devil's going to try to get him to do what's bad. In life it's not like that, a lot of times is just friends offering you advice, trying to get you to do what's best for you but not really knowing what's best. It's up to you. you have to make your decision... this song's called H"

      I was 13-14 when Undertow came out.
      Such a pivotal time of development on your way to adulthood.
      I heard Sober being played in some random store at the mall, and I was immediately drawn in. That bass. Those drums. That VOICE. What a hook.
      I went to Sam Goody and bought the album and listened to it religiously in my bedroom. Would fall asleep to the crickets and get scared shitless when the machine message awoke me. (it wasn’t until a year later did I accidentally open the back of the jewel case only to find a cow licking his own asshole, but that’s besides the point).
      Imagine the pain and restlessness of 14-15-16, waiting 3 years for another album. At that time we had no internet and no clue when your favorite band would release anything.
      Then seemingly out of nowhere Aenima dropped and everything changed. Everything was different. Elevated, Stinkfist was played over the airways and was noticeably more complex, but progressing from Undertows sound so there was familiarity. Then Eulogy with that unique opening for the first time and then this absolute GEM of a song in H.
      Wasn’t like anything I had heard. Deeper, more emotional. Clear and expansive. Like some sort of soundtrack to a 16 year olds night holed up in his bedroom after school days and hockey practice.
      That breakdown before the explosion at the end, I wanted to every one of my friends to hear it but not sure if they would understand. After little afraid they would dismiss it as just another song so I kept it to myself. It almost wasn’t worth it to share considering how ahead of time it was to me.
      Pure greatness - there’s no other way to describe it and the impact it has had on me and so many others who were lucky enough to live through that time and felt the same way. Thank you Tool

    I picture this song as the classic devil on one shoulder and angel on the other. The snake represents Maynard's past selfish self, which is being challenged by the angel on the other shoulder, or 'my blood'. This fits nicely into the song being about his son being born and necessitating a change in Maynard's priorities. Also the line, 'what's holding up is a mirror'. I love this song so much and is always my answer when someone asks about an underrated Tool song.

    Bratha Thank you so much for finding Tool and then having the courage to explore this road. This whole album is incredible. When it first came out I could not stop listening to "Jimmy". The intro just got me. The interlude is really the beginning of it. Everyone has a different interpretation of what the song means to them and there's the beauty. Tool changes every time I hear them. But the goosebumps stay the same

      I don't recall where I heard it quoted, but it's about his 11 year old self and finding himself after the lifetime spent trying to forget the horrible things that happened that year. I also heard a very different explanation for H, but I guess like you said, it's interpretation. Funny how they set it up so that each theory could make perfect sense 🙂

    Having watched almost every Tool reaction video on your channel in one day, the one thing I really enjoy is the evolution in how you react to their songs. The time changes you expect and those that surprise you, your reactions to Maynard's voice, the anticipation of Adam's riffs. It's so great to see. Over 20 years as a Tool fan, and they still surprise me, too. Just loving your appreciation of Tool and these reaction vids.

    I remember the day I heard Aenima for the first time. It was the day it was released, a co-worker and I walked to the local music store at lunch got the cd, and went back to work. We didn't get anything done the rest of the day, we sat there mesmerized, glancing at each other with gobsmacked looks on our faces. You have to listen to the entire album in one sitting with headphones on, then do your reaction immediately after. I really enjoy your reactions to music I have loved almost my entire life.

    You take me back to the late 90s, when I was a teenager and discovered this album one night in MTV seeing AEnima. I should have be gone to sleep for long, to be up early for school next morning. But I was craving alternative music at night. My head exploded, when I found out a band like Tool existed and it felt like a whole world was opening up to me, opening my 3rd eye on what great music can be for you!

    H is the middle name of Maynard's first born Devo. This song is all about not living out the sins of your father. As Maynard and his mother were abused. He sees his child for the first time and it kills all of that in him. My personal favorite song from this band.

    Phenomenal song. Was always my favorite song on my favorite album from them. Sadly, hearing this and learning this entire album when I was young, I never even stopped to ask what the lyrics meant. It's something I rarely try to do. I just can't fathom trying to decide what someone else what thinking or feeling when they created it. Without the writer saying it explicitly, I just allow songs to take on their own meaning for each listener. Cant deny though, it does seem that the more people listen to a song with together, with a similar understanding of the meaning. The more power the song gains.
    For me it was always about vulnerability. Giving into temptation or trying not to. Realizing you're trapped and being fine with it.
