Reg. chivalry: You're a respected independent human being. I assume you can take care of yourself. If i'd pay for your dinner, i'd pressure you into a guilt. My respect for you does not allow that. Of course i'd open a door for you but i will never allow you to feel any guilt to me! If you're invited and interested but not sure about the guy, just straight forward say "Ok, fine, but i`ll pay for myself!" - that keeps open all doors for you, even the exit.
That is a skewed perspective though. It's the opposite in the Philippines. Men treat women when they go out because they respect them and want to be courteous. To invite someone out to keep you company and expect them to pay is rude. Women already spend so much time, energy, and money just preparing and looking good, so if a man invites us out, it's courteous to treat us and make us feel like our efforts to get ready, show up, and spend more time with you are not wasted.
I would add, that many women would see "chivalry" just as sexism here. I come from the countryside, for me it was normal to open doors for women or even just older people. But in university many women were angry at me if I did, didn't wanted me to let them have my chair in the bus, etc. I was not interested in these women, for me it was just the normal thing to do. But I stopped it really fast in university, because there they saw it as sexism (even when I was polite the same to other men...)

I am a German guy and I kind of like traditional gender roles (only to a certain extent of course, not like "woman barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen" level). So, the paying question on a first date is actually a good indicator. If the girl seriously refuses to let me pay, it is clear that we have a different mindset as to gender roles and that we should better no start a serious relationship.
Hi Dayanara, as a foreign man living in DE I find this video very interesting. Perhaps a few points from a male perspective. 1. Courtship: Maybe its just me, but I dont understand the difference between courting and dating. Personally, if I am taking you out on dates then thats the courting phase in and of itself. 2. Chivalry is dead: In fairness there are probably many men in DE who WANT to be chivalrous but its frowned up. In fact, a German man once told me he was verbally assaulted by a woman here for holding open the door. She claimed, using a lot of foul language that it was offensive and sexist. Youre kind of on eggshells if youre dating a German woman imo. 3. Affection: I noticed the PDA thing too. Its not as common back home in Ireland but I think its nice to see people happy together. 4. Honesty: Its sometimes jarring but at least you know where you stand. It makes for stronger bonds but can be hurtful, too. 5. Organised: Germany is famous for this. I really, really like this part of German culture.

Your energy and expressions are great :D Being honest and blunt is important to me because I expect friends and my partner to care for me and not make false compliments because it would backfire once in public and that would feel like being betrayed :D The brutal part may be that we do not sugar coat criticism much or rather focus on the positives instead like "You should try this or that more often, you look fantastic with it." I think planning may also be detrimental to spontaneity, but we do it to make the most of our time and avoid disappointment. I think some structure is good, too much of it is awful.

Hmm, yung unang German bf ko, ayaw akong pagbayarin. Sabi nya dapat I am treated like a princess. Lagi sya nagbubukas ng pinto (even sa car), pinagsha-shopping ako, saka malambing talaga dahil madalas akong regaluhan and very expressive. Sabi niya, chivalry is not dead and he doesn't believe that men and women are equal dahil women will always be superior (since we can carry life inside). And I agree. Germans, Russians, Italians, Americans...there are no difference among them, men are so simple towards their feelings and if they don't like a girl it's so evident from the first time. Yeah I went to grad school with lots of Germans and I noticed the brutally honest bit first hand--whoa! lol I don't know what the status of women is in the Philippines, but it seems that most Western European countries have been imbricated with the feminist concepts of equality and mutuality, and because of this, those little acts of so-called chivalry are not present. The male/female gender scripts are less hardened in place. All countries have different expectations around social etiquette and social norms, which you have been experiencing. They probably think what you experience in your country is just as weird as you think they are. Folks are funny, eh?
Why SHOULD I get treated differently just because I'm a woman? I can pay the bill and open a door and buy flowers just as much as a man can. Everything you mentioned in cons is definitely a pro for me.
It's more about the culture of a country, for example I'm latina and in a date I expect that the guy will pay the bill and have chivalry since in my culture that is normal and expected, and I know that I can pay the bill myself, but it's more to show respect and attention than sexism, and actually most girls in my country don't like it when a guy doesn't pay the bill in a date

When I first came to the Philippines to live there, some guys tried to court me. So this is kind of random, but are German guys opened to doing video chats often or not? I posted this on another video on a similar topic. I’m Cuban-American and my guy friend is German. Hmm, yung unang German bf ko, ayaw akong pagbayarin. Sabi nya dapat I am treated like a princess. Lagi sya nagbubukas ng pinto (even sa car), pinagsha-shopping ako, saka malambing talaga dahil madalas akong regaluhan and very expressive. Sabi niya, chivalry is not dead and he doesn't believe that men and women are equal dahil women will always be superior (since we can carry life inside). And I agree. I think women need to embrace their feminine side and let men be men by serving us in their masculine ways, while we serve them in our feminine ways. I think that would be more empowering for both. Generally, I'd say Germans are pretty good at communicating and responding since we're very responsible and take things seriously for the most part. Yeah I went to grad school with lots of Germans and I noticed the brutally honest bit first hand--whoa! lol I don't know what the status of women is in the Philippines, but it seems that most Western European countries have been imbricated with the feminist concepts of equality and mutuality, and because of this, those little acts of so-called chivalry are not present. The male/female gender scripts are less hardened in place. All countries have different expectations around social etiquette and social norms, which you have been experiencing. They probably think what you experience in your country is just as weird as you think they are. Folks are funny, eh?

When I first came to the Philippines to live there, some guys tried to court me. Since I grew up in Germany, I couldn't get nor understand the filipino boys :D

So this is kind of random, but are German guys opened to doing video chats often or not? I posted this on another video on a similar topic. I’m Cuban-American and my guy friend is German. We are in this friendship/relationship 😅 not sure what to call us yet by American standards since we’ve only been speaking for about 2 months, he might think otherwise since I mentioned the word “Schatz” at some point without knowing how strong it was compared to “babe” 😅 It was probably a bit too early, but he accepted it. We talk everyday via snap and send each other pictures of our day, etc. He’s really grown on me and I find him adorable. He’s 24 and I’m 27. I just feel like he’s not too fond now of Whatsapping. He used to be earlier when we started talking. We found each other on a language app. He was the first to reach out to me and asked what I thought about an LDR. I said I was fine with it. I’ve been in something similar before, yet nothing to this extent as we are thousands of miles apart, either way I just said why not. There’s a thrill behind it I’m willing to try. YOLO anyways. I’m all about seeing what’s out there and learning different cultures, I’ve always been very openminded. Anyhow I’ve told him that only messaging can’t make us develop a deeper connection, and I told him if we can make a schedule to call, but his schedule is a bit sporadic. So yea this is kind of the dilemma, but he is a sweet heart and I enjoy are little chats everyday 🙃.. this lack of video calls sometimes also gives me mixed signals, so it’s like I don’t know what to think, but he does makes it a priority to message me everyday.
