    It's called a monkeys fist and was used to add weight to the end of rope. It was used to allow you to throw a rope up and over a tree limb etc.

    Yep its called a monkeys fist normally would have a tail with an eye splice with extra rope, we would make an use them on the ships for easy of passing either tow or tye up lines to shore of other vesels.

    The rope was bound around a solid shot and or dipped in lead paint in the days of yore

    Ity a monkeys fist. It was attached to a lighter rope and then tied onto a heavier rope, pipe, hose and thrown to get the heavier hose or rope or pipe to a desired point. The navy uses these to get refueling hoses from one ship to another ship.
