LEARN to PAINT CHROME Effects! | FULL Airbrush Painting Tutorial (part 1)

- Опубліковано 23 вер 2024
- Within this full airbrush painting tutorial, I'm going to show you the techniques that I use to paint a chrome or stainless steel effect. A lot of it has to do with adding a high contrast of values within the painting with little to no blending within certain areas. For this demo, I'll be painting a teapot/kettle against a black background. I will also go over the differences in rendering something highly reflective (like chrome) with something more subtle (like skin textures in portraits). I am painting this one with acrylic paint sprayed through an airbrush. The entire painting is completed in a single color (black), and the highlights are achieved by removing paint. Thanks for watching!

Always great to have you here Tony. Thanks so very much! Have a great weekend and get some painting in.
New to airbrushing, old to many other things. I really enjoy your videos, you seem to always explain exactly what Im wandering about. Also the tone and voice are well suited to my ears. Thanks
Thanks so much! It's greatly appreciated
I always wanted to know how to airbrush chrome or stainless steel, thanks for sharing!
Hope it helps- Thanks Louis!
still going strong! congratulations
thanks so much!
Another gem, great tips, video quality. Huge thanks, I was having a hard time making chrome.
I really appreciate it- thanks so very much!!
Great job! Awesome chroming!!!🤜👍👊
Thanks so very much JC!
I love watching you work. Just in case you didn't know, Badger is having a sale on gold plated and gunmetal 20/20 Sotars. $85 each, $160 for both including shipping.
Thanks! Oh yeah, as soon as I got that email on Sunday from badger my order was placed. I've been wanting a gold sotar since I missed the first one back in 2020. I'm very excited for it!
Thanks!
Blue, thank you so much!! You are too generous.
@@theartworkshop You're welcome. Also, there's a freely available upload of Hajime Sorayama's technique to doing the metallic illustrations that he is famous for. In general he puts down the various values of the metal and then puts down a coat of transparent blue or tan (depending on whether it is to reflect the sky or ground) over it before laying down the specular highlights.
@@blu12gaming44 Sorayama is fantastic. Sadly I've never had the chance to see any of his work in person. Hopefully someday!
I loved you used the old "Charley White" chrome technique ...(the god of chrome) effects. Also using a "paasche mdl H" for the back ground great to tell people ... I have one on my desk all the time, so good for filling in large areas and the offer of three different head sizes. They last for ever and the parts are cheaper than most and sold world wide.
*Back in the in the 60-70's I'd use the photo copier and make several copies of the image. Stack them and using a two hole punch; I'd add reference holes on the top. Back then I used rubber cement, now, just "Photo mount" adhesive. First dust those two holes with a light bit of color, and from there I could lay the next mask over those same holes. It really helps with most image. The trick to chrome (eyes and glass) is the sharpness and contrast like you said. ... I use color pencils, though some of those new shinny plastic coated paper seem to have issues with adhesive to the surface. Have you noticed that?
I called Dru (Blair) and found he took "Radu Vera" plastic shield ideas to the max, as he has a "box set" on sale, so I bought the "Box Set" (About 40-50 stencils as I'm not sure) for a friend in the USA who I met here in Oz, as he was a political cartoonist back then at News Limited.
I've just bought a broken AB ... mate, I can rebuild it as I have the parts it seems... let me know. I remember Mark Fredrickson told me years ago he was changing to "Adobe" for his Ad work as the AB reminded him too much of the dentist...LOL ...
Very good demo ... also very useful for painting Automotive work, as I just did a painting of a 1953 Hudson for a customer (all that chrome ... took hours).
A side note, don't EVER go cheap on colored pencils ... I also have use water color pencils also in hair and eye lashes with great success. I then seal it with a spray sealer (between first airbrush, then scratching thin lines back, dusting some airbrush color for tint, and then using the pencils for fine details... Again the quality of your work is excellent and your detailed instructions are the best ... please keep it up mate, I really do love your posts ... "Thunder Down Under" ... Ken
Great catch on the Paache H there Ken!! Excellent info- Thanks so much
Mark, I see you went a bit old school there, sneaking in what looks like a Paasche H series single action.😆
hahah! sure did. The old school airbrushes are always fun to work with.
Grazie per la spiegazione dei metalli
Fenomenale!!!
thanks! Happy to hear it.
Hi mark another simple for you but very effective piece 😊 what's your opinion on flow enhancer instead of distilled, I'll soon be switching over to artists inks with isopropyl alcohol as demonstrated by Rob but using up all my acrylics first ???
Thanks Dean! I've never used any flow improvers that made much of a difference. Some of the flow improvers are made to use with paint brushes rather than airbrushes. I know that some people love them though so it's always good to test them out and see what you enjoy using the most. I found that distilled water works best with certain paints and inks, but it does weaken the binder if the paint. Helps with trip dry too!
🎉
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks Mag! Have a great weekend.
Is this style applicable to miniatures? :) New sub here!
Why not just chrome paint on minis?
@@scottyboy6269 hi sir! i know how to paint it manually I just want to know if it is possible with an airbrush
Yes, many miniature painters use airbrushes in their work!
@@theartworkshop I think they meant can you paint a 3d mini to look like 2d chrome without it being chrome by using this technique.
I have tried to paint with an airbrush and no matter how I have it adjusted, it looks like I've used a paint roller.
I'd recommend using a high quality airbrush paint like createx, golden high flow, schminke, etc. A good paint makes all the difference in an airbrush
Marks recommendations are great! I would just like to add for you to start off with india ink (higgins) as acrylic airbrush paint can be stubborn if not diluted right! Other acrylic ink that is also great to use would be DR. Ph. Martin's bombay India ink! Once you see how diluted those are. You will get an idea of how diluted your acrylic airbrush paint has to be! Don't give up.
@jc2200 thanks. I'll give that a try.
@KD0AFK33 can also be diluted with distilled water as well you are most welcome!!
@@jc2200 excellent advice, JC! I need to get back to using some DR. Ph. Martin inks. I used to love painting with them.
