  • Philippine Airlines have revealed that they will permanently be retiring their one and only Airbus A340-300, as they take deliveries of the A350-900. Once the retirement will be completed, it will mark the end of A340 operations in the Asia-Pacific.

Only airplane ever built with 5 APU’s. I would frequently see Lufthansa 340’s takeoff from DFW in the summer and it climbed so slow, you swear it was engine out.

Is there such thing as "wind shear escape" maneuvers with this aircraft?

Sad to say goodbye to the 340s. It's just like when PAL retired their 747s for the 777s, it was sad to see the Queens go but it was needed so PAL can expand and operate efficiently. Same goes to the 340s, it's being replaced by the new A350s. Really sad to see them go, but for modernization, it's good. Also saying hi from the Philippines!

I fly them pretty often with Lufthansa to different destinations. You can tell that it's an older plane but with the new Lufthansa interior it doesn't really matter. Still quite loud inside.
In summer the plane takes an insanely long take off roll! More than a minute.
In Bogota the plane had to leave 80 seat's empty in order to even make it over the mountains.
Although the a340 is underpowered it's one of the safest planes built.

I have a feeling that most of the 340s are going to wind up broken down for parts given the commonality that it shares with the 330.

I'm glad they are being replaced by newer aircraft. Having flown on Philippine Airlines A340s, I can tell you that they don't have per-seat inflight entertainment. That's why I'm glad that they're getting new aircraft which are more fuel-efficient and do have per-seat inflight entertainment.

Very sad that my favourite aircraft is already being retired. Flew on an SAA A343 & A346 many years ago and it was the best experience I have ever had in the air. That it also actually started my interest in aviation. But that was in 2015 and like what you said, 4 engine aircraft are becoming less economical. The A340 still has plenty of life elsewhere in the world and would still stay special to me.

PAL leased some from Gulf Air in 1996 while awaiting deliveries of their own from Airbus. I flew on one of the first non stop flights in November 1996 they did from London Heathrow when they switched the route from London Gatwick. They pulled out of the new route after a few months sadly, only being reinstated within the last few years.

Flew first class on PAL A340-300 last year, SFO-MNL. The crew service was very nice, but the plane looked very aged inside and out. Very noisy engines, much more than a 777 on takeoff, but quieter than the 777's once at cruising altitude. I just much prefer two engine aircraft, less shaking of the wings in turbulence

The first time flying an A340, my family & I were upgraded to Business Class on Lufthansa on our first trip to the US back in 1996. We got the upgrade because we missed our connecting flight to JFK from Harare (yes Lufthansa used to fly there) and had to spend the night in Frankfurt airport. Other flights on the A340 was on BWIA (very bright livery), South African Airways & Virgin Atlantic.

The A340 is my favorite aircraft of all time. I've flown on the A340-300 of PAL, Lufthansa, Kuwait Airways, China Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, also the A340-600 of Qatar Airways. It is really sad to see PAL has retired them suddenly as I planned to fly with them again. Too bad now I need to go to the other side of the world to catch the A340 and sadly no 5th freedom flight I could hop within Asia on the A340. Lufthansa had stopped flying 5th freedom between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta on Q3 2015 using an A340-300.

Flew a 343 on Qatar from DOH to Male, not the longest flight admittedly but the only time I ever remember flying on an a340 and I'm glad I have. Always wanted to fly on a 346 and I hope I get the chance, although I better hurry up! Since moving to Madrid (one of the last remaining a340 hubs of activity anywhere),getting to see 343's & 346's regularly take-off and land overhead is an increasingly rarefied delight, although now that Iberia are utilizing their beautiful shiny new 359's regularly now, it won't be long before 340's become rarer sights even here. And watching these different widebodies take-off & comparing their climb rates, it's so evident the 359's are considerably lighter and able to do so much more on just 2 state-of-the-art engines, especially when it's followed by a 343 that always looks like it's struggling to clear the end of the runway and then climbs at what looks like about a 3 degree angle! That said, the a340s are by far the most impressive takeoffs and landings here, especially the 346's. Such unique beauties, and they will definitely be missed when they're gone.

Air Mauritius still operates 5 A340-300s, (previously had 8) and since they’ve been receiving A350-900s and soon A330-900s they’re gonna phase the A340s out completely by 2021-2022. The A340-300s have been massive work horses for the airline cause for almost 20 years, they’ve been flying non-stop to and from Europe to Mauritius. Fun fact: Air Mauritius was the first to operate the A340-300E (313X) varient.

Altough the addition state-of-the-art planes are a welcome improvement, that's not what they need to work on the most. What Philippine airlines needs are modern airport facilities and not those collection of shameful bus-terminals in Manila they pass off as airhubs. Also, they need to work on their service on board towards Filipino passengers... I have heard stories of PAL flight attendants who discriminate against Filipino passengers while every other nationality gets preferrential treatment on board.
