@@whatdoiputhere9618when I attended music school we were trained to go down to a c below the bass clef (I believe concert g1 but I could be mistaken). I was only able to go down to c3 (concert g2)
I just finished my arrangement of this in a HTTYD medley for 8 horns and wow it’s so interesting to see the different interpretations but also how different people also can write for more advanced players!!
Thanks! It can be a little tricky on what to add to the original parts but still work. A lot was cut from my original arrangement, but I think most of the credit should go to Marc's mixing and mastering skills, making it sound so much better than I imagined
There's actually a note almost an octave lower. The opening has a Pedal C that we are playing (not notated here), and then there is a Bb at 4:05 that's harder to hear. The low As you are referring to are played by both of us stopped and muted (I used a wood and metal stop mute) and I basically said to Marc that we should just blast it to mimic the war horns from the sound track
Hi. I haven’t played horn since junior year of college and I graduated last year. Recently I rewatched this movie and thought, “wow I miss horn”. Watching this, following the music, and fingering along (best I can) really helped me remember what I love about symphonic horn. I really hope next summer I’ll be able to play in a community band of some sort because wow do I miss it. Thank you for this.
Damn, that dude what did to us? John, you made us part of Vickings era. Like, Nick Glienie Smith, took us to Narnia!! Darn so badass movie and so beloved one . Toothless rules! My beloved dragon ! Wrath of Night, rules baby!! Wohoooo!!😂😂❤ ... Thank you Mark for this epic theme. The great badass brass section is so magical in the soundtrack ... 12 French Horns in F , 4 Trumpets in B flat, 4 Tenor Trombones , 2 Bass Trombones and Contrabass Tuba doubled by B- flat low Cimbasso ! Epic brass sound! Darn me!! I have it in CD !❤ Bless me , to have it , my beloved soundtrack in a CD audio ! John Powell , love you!
hehe, yeah not many people know I used to play trumpet. chops are a little rusty, but the magic of recording, I get as many takes as I need. This might not be the last time you see me playing trumpet ;)
Epic collab for an epic opening score! You sound amazing as always! Your content always inspires me to pick up the horn and practice, and I’m even thinking of making a channel of my own this summer. Keep up the good work Marc!
Please publish this I’m so craving playing this (I play both trumpet and French Horn) with sheet music!! Love your work Marc!! Keep up the great work!!
So beautiful! I think you should do "Toothless Found" (along with "Two New Alphas", though that one is rather long) some day. It's one of my favorite songs from the HTTYD series. Thanks for the amazing content!
I was waiting for this 😍 one of my favourite film music! damn, you are playing this so clear, soft, but also powerful. The deep horn passages are perfect! I love it!!! Maybe next time Romantic Flight and Dragon's Den together? 😉
I'm down for doing more. I'll ask Marc and see. He has a long list of cues he wants to do and I've talked to him about arranging some more. maybe we'll add this to the list Edit: those cues are not together in the movie, but they originally were, so this could be a nice way to show some "unheard" music
This is utterly MAGNIFICENT! You've done it again!!! This was totally epic. I LOVE it!! Okay, but it would be so cool if you did "You're that Spider Guy" by Hans Zimmer from the Amazing Spider-Man 2!!! It would be so epic!! Thank you so much for these amazing vids!! As someone who loves music, and wants to play the trumpet and French horn someday, I love watching them!!
This is literally a blessing to my ears I love it so much!! Where did you get the background track so I could maybe try this, is it just the original soundtrack?
yup, original soundtrack with an arrangement for horn and trumpet on top that I made and marc and I recorded. I know Marc does some other mastering shenanigans, but that's the gist of it
In some parts yes, but i included trombone/tuba lines in the horn part and some woodwind/string stuff in the trumpet, at 1:49 is vocals in the horn part, and 3:17 is the viola part that marc is playing while i'm playing a clarinet solo.
idk about marc, but I did mine on separate days, trumpet first, and going back to horn the next day and I needed about an hour warm up to get my chops right, especially for that low stuff
None of the videos here on this channel are the "actual" horn/trumpet parts. This is an arrangement, not a transcription, so some parts are altered, like playing the trombone line when the horns are resting or have boring repeated notes, or the male chorus line instead of resting or the single line that's in the horns. No parts were "missed" just left out in favor of a different melodic line. For the trumpets, I think I used pretty much the whole trumpet part (going off of memory from a year and half ago when I did this), just changed static notes to woodwind and string runs. It's also worth noting we recorded more than what is shown in the video, that's just what marc thought best for the video production side

John Powell didn't have to go this hard for these movies but he did and I love him for that.
Same
He arguable made this franchise what it is.
Proof that the French horn is the best instrument
It really is ❤
I’m a beginner on French horn and I’m like a year in on trumpet player and I think both are just as good although French horn is harder
trumpet is better and there is no argument
Trombone is way better than both
@@Trombonemusic765 I strongly disagree with you. Trumpet on top
The low register on the french horn is very impressive. Well done!
Thank you ! I absolutely love the low parts in that piece :)
Tbh I had no idea French horns could sound like that, and I have to say it’s really amazing! Beautiful arrangement

Those stopped low A's were especially impressive.

What a spectacular cue, and what a performance! Great arrangement too, super faithful to the original :)

I'm a trumpet player who is a somewhat competent french horn/mellophone player as well. that pedal a at 4:16 shook my brain

Without even mentioning the technique or the sound, your endurance really impresses me
Thank you for exploring more low horn and stopping
100% my idea and Marc liked it for the War Horns. for me, it's 3 separate takes, 1 metal stop, 1 wood stop, and 1 muted
And that was one really cool idea :)
Holy heck that horn parts low. I gotta practice 4:07
That low register is so good gives me chills

Great work guys! I must admit, I got off a bit and had to re-start when I saw Andrew playing a trumpet. Just wasn't expecting that... :))

I love the French Horn and the movie music amazing.
I love this movie and its soundtrack you and your buddy nailed this song it was a joy to listen to
Damn super clean trumpet playing
I play none of these instruments but this is incredible!
We even got Dragon Battle as well. Nice!!
The soundtrack split the cue 1m2 into 2 tracks, so I opted to do the full cue and was even tempted to do the original opening
Thanks buddy. You make the soundtrack of this opening so good, that you deserve a gift.
This is very beautiful Marc, your tracks are always great
It's incredible, astonishing, extraordinary, impressive, beautiful, wonderful and spectacular!

That low G in bass clef is no joke

you should get Christopher Bill in on something like this
French Horn, Trumpet and Trombone

I actually pretty much always record them back to back, starting with the horn !

at 4:20 what kind of mute is that or is that just stopped horn
It's actually a combination of both ! Andrew thought it'd sound great if we did mute + stopped 🙂
