Just needed to say it's awesome seeing Laura kick some cancer butt and both of you out and riding together again these past few videos. I'm happy for you guys.
Great example of where a bike can take you both physically and emotionally. Great to see you both riding and having fun. Wonderful landscapes, skies and music. Great video. I'll be watching it a few more times.
This one definitely shows that length or difficulty does not necessarily equate to an epic ride. Party pace is the *only* way to do this one. Thanks PLP!
Glad to see you guys enjoying this trail as I am from Bakersfield and love riding it. The feeling you get when standing quietly at the end of the trail is unreal. I actually hiked a little ways passed the end of the bike accessible trail and noticed it would be way too rough to ride through anyway, so you guy's don't have to regret not going further. Take care!
Oh my gosh...you are in my backyard. I live in Bakersfield, and Wind Wolves is everyone's easy jaunt for when we need to get out of the city. Its often the destination for overnight touring, as its only a 35 mile ride and has decent camping amenities. To get you birding fix, try to visit the western Kern River Bike Trail during a wet year. The area is used as a water recharge area, so you get tons of ducks and various other birds. The Tule Elk reserve is near to the western end as well. About 20 miles north along the I-5 is the Kern National Wildlife Refuge. That is a birding mecca and lots of dirt roads.
If there are Emmy's for UA-cam, I will nominate those skies. Your cameras really made a capture there. Wildlife tip, especially in grasslands, is lay the bike down, and just sit. Sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes, the landscape does come back alive so often. I am putting together a local ride for spring migration, and we are doing just that, like a point count. Then going back and ride during breeding season. The dirt rural road is low traffic and crosses grasslands and wetlands. Vey similar topography to your ride today but with more water.
Great light! Your video looked amazing on my large monitor. And how visually satisfying to have wide open sky with no power poles and mostly no fences. Thanks!
This looks like my type of ride! Never heard of it. I live in San Diego, so this is very accessible for me. I think I can even get my husband to join me! You are both great. So glad to see you out and enjoying our temperate weather. I need a mini trip!!
Wow. That’s a ride that has me wishing I could teleport to the US. Great footage made even better by the obvious joy the two of you shared on this ride.
Great video Russ! It was awesome meeting you and Laura while you were there. Next time you roll through Bakersfield, look me up, and I'll set up an awesome gravel ride for you guys. Enjoy the rest of your trip!
I lived in Bakersfield about 10 yrs ago, I first visited Wind Wolves Preserve with my children's grade school classes on fieldtrips. Later, my 15-yr-old son and I would bring our mt bikes to this trail on a Saturday and pedal up. It was always a blast coming back, which is practically all downhill, we would catch some adventurous speeds back to the trailhead. I don't recall ever seeing any other bicyclists when we were out there, a couple times we saw high school runners getting in some trail work. The history of the trail is pretty cool, before California was stolen from Mexico! Glad you folks visited this trail, looks like lots of smiles and such.
Nice path. Keep in mind time of year is critical. Gets insanely hot in the summer, and smog can sometimes be an issue. As in this vid, green-time is best, late winter/early spring.
My FAVORITE kind of Russ and Laura video! If Dave and I were there it would take 8 hours to go 5 miles as I would be stopping every 50 feet for a photo op!
I live in Bako and I use to come out here as a kid to go hiking. I never thought about cycling here for some reason! I better get myself out there with my hard tail
There is another great hipster camp in new cuyama called blue sky ranch. You can sleep in a something that looks like a covered wagon. Looks like a great ride!
I’m expecting the Carrizo plains video soon! Especially if you are riding wind wolves and staying at the buckhorn. If you make it into Taft I recommended eating at Asian Experience. Good people and good food in there.
Thanks for sharing this ride! My go to line for open range cattle is "nothing to see here". It has proven surprisingly effective. YMMV. Keep doing what you're doing!
Another amazing video. The interesting geology around there is from numerous fault lines including the San Andreas. If you go north to Carrizo Plain National Monument there is much more likelyhood of seeing some nature as well as some potential rides. Stunning geology. You can actually ride across the San Andreas fault and see evidence of how the pacific plate is moving north while the North American plate wants to move south, and thus we have earthquakes. The view from the air is truly inspiring and scary! I have yet to really explore it on bike, but friends say you are really on your own out there. Hope you can give it a try sometime.
Thanks for showcasing my favorite local ride. Pretty much our little secret but I suspect we’ll see more folks here now. As you said, best to come out in cooler months. Also as much as I like riding solo, I’d suggest riding with a friend. It’s eerily quiet out there and I have seen coyotes plus there are posted signs for mountain lions and rattlesnakes.
Looks great, reminds me of some valleys in Central Otago, NZ. Not surprising considering the similar (ring of fire) geography. PS: great to see Laura's TAL mirror, been riding with the same since 2004 and it's literally saved my life several times.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Just rewatched your NZ series, rode the Great Taste Nelson - Motueka trail return yesterday (currently drive/cycling the South Island) and the ferry was full of bikes both times I used it. Great to see how many of those planned rides are now reality and bringing benefits. One thing that has broadened the user base which wasn't anticipated back then, e-bikes now mean so many more people can ride. I'm still analog but guesstimate 30-50% ebikes on the trails now
Russ and Laura: Thank you for sharing. I live in San Diego and did not know about the history of this old road. FYI, I sent you some belated holiday money thru PayPal, instead of joining Patreon at this time. I know it is not your preferred option. I found the account on a description on a previous video. Enjoy.
I am from Bakersfield, though I do not ride bicycles that often I love to go to this place at night. Any place there is a source of water get back in there after dark and you will hear nothing less than an opera of coyote voices singing to you the joys of the Moon.
Nice scenery, looks a little like Scottland. You are such a nice cycling duo to watch! My best wishes for Laura's health! Guys, how can you stand wearing those caps under the helmet? Don't you feel your hair/scalp "suffocating" ? I tried it once under winter rain, but took it off after a while! If you do it for the visor, you can make a DIY one yourselves, and attach it with zip ties onto the helmet. Find the videos on YT. Have a nice time and....happy 2024!
Are you on your way to San Luis Obispo? You should try the dirt/gravel ride at the very top of Huasna Rd. When you get to the dirt its a beautiful up and back, about 28 miles total, 14 out and 14 back. Lovely
Suggest two of the most scenic rides I know of. Very well known Flume Trail above Lake Tahoe and lesser known Prairie Creek north of Orick, which you can loop on a gravel or mt bike. If you go up to the North Coast and have a mt bike, stop in and ride Paradise Royal.
Love the vids lately from your last trip! Glad you got a lot of content from there and ive been enjoying all of them. Question of wonderment lately though… how often do you go out and not film anything? I understand it can seem like a waste of possible revenue besides all the useful info you put out but sometimes I enjoy my no video maybe a picture or two rides! Thanks russ and laura (taking it in)
Damn, wish this video came out a month ago. I traveled near there on my way to Sedona for New Years. Would have loved to stop through and check it out. Great stuff.
Beautiful area, I used to live in Bako and love those trails, but. I will add a word of caution to those who want to travel from out of town, it gets brutally hot and it is not green as in the video, which appears to be a springtime or winter ride. A lot of out-of-towners make fun of Bakersfield, but it has some amazing hills and mountains that are great for cyclists like Tehachapi and Woody/Glennville areas.
Funny enough, the old windows Home Screen of the impossibly green hill is a photo called “Bliss,” is somehow NOT photoshopped, and was of a hill in Sonoma County, CA. Pretty sure on those details.
Have you ridden the Bizz Johnson up in Susanville? I tried lest summer, but hit a "trail closed due to fire clean up and if we catch you it's a $10,000 fine" sign so I turned around. The sign said clean up would be done by now though. Could be a bit chilly this time of year though.
such a cool little trip. i live in hollywood and i'm looking for a bike trip getaway and scouring the west coast for secluded scenic routes. Where did you guys park? thanks
Just needed to say it's awesome seeing Laura kick some cancer butt and both of you out and riding together again these past few videos. I'm happy for you guys.
Seeing Laura so excited about this trail was absolutely priceless. Also - beautiful scenery. 👌
Great example of where a bike can take you both physically and emotionally. Great to see you both riding and having fun.
Wonderful landscapes, skies and music. Great video. I'll be watching it a few more times.
Pure California scenery. So many folks don't know the real California--although honestly, California has so many types of bio regions.
The floating camera footage is putting production to a new level
This one definitely shows that length or difficulty does not necessarily equate to an epic ride. Party pace is the *only* way to do this one. Thanks PLP!
Glad to see you guys enjoying this trail as I am from Bakersfield and love riding it. The feeling you get when standing quietly at the end of the trail is unreal. I actually hiked a little ways passed the end of the bike accessible trail and noticed it would be way too rough to ride through anyway, so you guy's don't have to regret not going further. Take care!
I camp here all the time and ride. It's a hidden gem.
Biked to trail and up and back from Bakersfield...epic views, recommended in cool months.
Oh my gosh...you are in my backyard. I live in Bakersfield, and Wind Wolves is everyone's easy jaunt for when we need to get out of the city. Its often the destination for overnight touring, as its only a 35 mile ride and has decent camping amenities.

About 20 miles north along the I-5 is the Kern National Wildlife Refuge. That is a birding mecca and lots of dirt roads.
Can you bike through Kern NWR?
The music towards the second half of the video is epic and sounded like something out of a western.
As pretty as the ride, Laura's smile! Loved how happy you were, Laura.
Y’all are showing me all the cool stuff that’s right in my back yard! Loving the riding vids again! ♥️
Great light! Your video looked amazing on my large monitor. And how visually satisfying to have wide open sky with no power poles and mostly no fences. Thanks!
The ride the music and you two looking so happy. Stay Safe!
Best videos when you are both featured. You two make a great team! It is great seeing Laura back riding!!
I live in Bakersfield so I've ridden this so many times. Never gets old.
That was one beautiful trail even with the cow patties. Thanks for another great video. Take care and stay safe, Al
Wow! Thanks you two. I am really excited to go.
4:28 !!! camp and bike to hikes......perfect
Stunning landscape. Thanks for taking us there.
You all have a safe trip which I know you did thank you.
My guy said “at least these cows don’t have horns” haha
No wonder why you guys are so happy. This is an awesome trail. Thank you for posting.
Wow! Just stunning! You two just exude happiness and enthusiasm - thanks for sharing your epic ride!
Wishing you happy trails, and many more.. may your wheels roll easy.
Putting it on the list. So nice to see you guys riding together!
Happy to see you guys riding these awesome trails
Awesome find! This place must look awesome in the springtime. Can't wait to ride this trail.
This looks like my type of ride! Never heard of it. I live in San Diego, so this is very accessible for me. I think I can even get my husband to join me! You are both great. So glad to see you out and enjoying our temperate weather. I need a mini trip!!
I like the off season. Just Laura and Russ on some rides. No testing of whatsoever. Good to see Laura. Keep on riding 👍
Wow not a bad drive from where I live. I'll definitely be checking this place out before summer.
"bearing binos" love it.
Wow! Another great biking tip. Thanks for it!
Love that you are doing these rides I can do near me
That looks incredible!!!
Stunning! I think I need to make this exact trip. Once again, thanks guys!

Another beautiful ride, really enjoyed the last few video adventures 🤟
Nailed it. Great video, guys.
Love it here in Colorado but your CA vids are making me long for some warm weather!
Nice path. Keep in mind time of year is critical. Gets insanely hot in the summer, and smog can sometimes be an issue. As in this vid, green-time is best, late winter/early spring.
Thanks for this, looks awesome 👍 Great video!
Beautiful shots, amazing trail. I hope I can get there someday. Great video, you two.
My FAVORITE kind of Russ and Laura video! If Dave and I were there it would take 8 hours to go 5 miles as I would be stopping every 50 feet for a photo op!
Thanks! Adding it to my list.
@2:31 - dang...i was waiting to see what the sign said!
I live in Bako and I use to come out here as a kid to go hiking. I never thought about cycling here for some reason! I better get myself out there with my hard tail
Looks nice! Deschutes River Trail offers similar ride here in Oregon!
Yep, I was going to make the same comment. I immediately thought of the Deschutes River Trail from the juncture with the Columbia. Highly recommend.
Super local to me!! Great videos guys!
There is another great hipster camp in new cuyama called blue sky ranch. You can sleep in a something that looks like a covered wagon.
Looks like a great ride!
Love your adventure content. Thanks
Freakin awesome trail! adding this to my ride bucket list
awesome place, will have to check it out. You had me laughing at “these cows don’t have horns,” uh those would be bulls lol
Loved you video. Its truly beautiful. I definitely sub'd Wonderful job. 💯👍
Stunning!
California here I come,Woo-hoo!!👌🙌🚴♂️🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️
I’m expecting the Carrizo plains video soon! Especially if you are riding wind wolves and staying at the buckhorn. If you make it into Taft I recommended eating at Asian Experience. Good people and good food in there.
No Carrizo this time, though we did tour there in the past. Headed to do some riding in the Los Padres.
Asian Experience is the bomb!
Thanks for sharing this ride! My go to line for open range cattle is "nothing to see here". It has proven surprisingly effective. YMMV.
Keep doing what you're doing!
Awesome video and thank you for sharing, must do in did.

Yeah. We've toured through the Carrizo plain in the past. It is amazing!
Ok, I really need to make a trip out to Cali. That looks amazing.

“Kinda like Eagle Fang” 🤣

PS: great to see Laura's TAL mirror, been riding with the same since 2004 and it's literally saved my life several times.
Yes! It reminded us both of the Otago rail trail.

Not enough :)
I love to see you two ride the Topsy Road (if you can find it). Full of history and challenge.
Damn, wish this video came out a month ago. I traveled near there on my way to Sedona for New Years. Would have loved to stop through and check it out. Great stuff.
Two hours from me....have go there. Thanks
Wicked beautiful.
Go now during the early spring when we have a massive wild flower bloom!! Don’t go during the summer because the trail and fields are dry as hell!!!
If you make it up to the SF Bay area, lmk! Lots of beautiful gravel biking here.
I live here 😁 y'all came when it wasn't scorching hot.
Looks amazing. Do you think you can ride with 28s? Or what's the min tires, you think?
You could. It wouldn’t be great. At least 38 IMO.
Beautiful area. I saw where you can make that a loop too...
Very cool and thanks for posting. Know of any options to extend the ride mileage?
It's close to Maricopa California,,I tough Maricopa Az,,,😂😂😂

such a cool little trip. i live in hollywood and i'm looking for a bike trip getaway and scouring the west coast for secluded scenic routes. Where did you guys park? thanks
There is a campground and trailhead parking near the start of the trail.
How long is the pole you mount your 360 can on?
hello, is it ok to have shocks on the bike for the type of trails? or is that overkill
I never imagined there would be such a bike trail in the vicinity of … Bakersfield! (Did I hear that right?!)
Can you walk the bike into the hiking area, or no bikes allowed at all? At 06:45, was that some form of supply truck behind you?
No bikes at all.
Have you been to marin?
Can you hook up to any other preserves out there that you can make the ride longer
No
