    Not the way I wanted to introduce you all to the Metrocentre (not to be confused with Phoenix's Metrocenter Mall), but I was able to take a quick look at how the UK's second largest shopping centre was doing just before COVID-19 lockdown was announced. Spoiler alert: it wasn't pretty.

    I can't believe it's been a year!
    I remember saying to my family "two weeks and it'll probably all be over" back in March 2020.

      Didn't we all say that at first, one year on and things are only just starting to look up.

    Going to the Metro Centre used to be an occasion, a day out. The place used to be beautiful, until Intu applied THEIR influence. Now it is sparse, cold, clinical, and uninviting. Thanks Intu!

      Too true, it was somewhere to go to for a day out. Now it's as dead as it is shown on the video

    Back in March when the lockdown was first declared it was bizarre. I was deemed essential so I remember getting on a major highway that is always busy only for it to be a complete ghost town.

    Look how quiet it is the way there’s no one in the car park and no one in the metro centre

    The part of the mall where the big Costa used to be and where all those little independent shops were is in dire need of renovating! It's a shadow of it's former self, so many bad decisions have been made here, they never should have sold it to Intu and they never should have closed Metroland, instead it just needed a makeover but it was so unique in that no other shopping centre has a theme park built inside it! They should never have closed the big Costa either and moved it into the new Next store, it was fine where it was because it was great for people watching and it kept the small independent shops open around it. It's such a shame what is happening to the metro centre, just terrible decision making!

    • @DeadMallWalking
      @DeadMallWalking  3 роки тому +1

      Yup, there have definitely been some questionable decisions made around the place. I hope the new owners don't repeat those mistakes.

    Nice video! Always cool to see more people using the Osmo Pocket. Little tip, if you're interested. Using the Pocket in Follow Mode with Slow Follow enabled will help keep the horizon level. Filming in 4k60p with this setting enabled, the camera will not attempt to follow people's faces.

    • @DeadMallWalking
      @DeadMallWalking  4 роки тому +1

      Ooh, I will for sure check this out! I like the Osmo a lot but its focus hunting issues do drive me crazy, and the firmware updates don't seem to have helped. I'll try your tip next time I leave the house; no faces round here at the minute, lol.

    I have always wondered why we don't design all sizeable commercial outlets to be converted into living accomodation as and when they have exhausted their function ...thus these shops could become smaller or larger flats,with attendant communal facilities

    • @DeadMallWalking
      @DeadMallWalking  2 роки тому

      This is something that comes up often, and the answer is more straightforward than you’d think - the units just aren’t set up for water, heat, and even electrics in the way that you’d think. Which is unfortunate!

    Has Walmart taken over your country too? It's a good looking mall. I'll take quality, architecture and ornate any day over purveyors of the cheap and disposable.

    • @DeadMallWalking
      @DeadMallWalking  4 роки тому +4

      Over here we have Asda instead, which is officially "part of the Walmart family" and has a little bit of overlap - George clothing, for example - but the branding etc. is mostly pretty separate. It's definitely a good looking mall, but I think it's going to suffer during the pandemic.

    I think locking down was a very bad decision, from an economic view. I wished everywhere stayed open, but with strict social distancing

      I get what you're saying but I just don't see how they could have achieved that, people generally aren't very good at social distancing and at times it is actually physically impossible to social distance but I hear what you're saying.

      That's the thing: this thing snuck up on us so suddenly that a lot of places just went from buzzing to empty overnight. It really does make me wonder how the reverse will look as the threat fades.

    The North American creep of words and phrases are becoming common in the UK, I still call it a shopping centre,the small and medium sized businesses have been closed, while the big multinationals are open, also the banks are purchasing houses, by the tens of thousand and also in bed with the house builders, wimpey, tarmac, redrow, Bryant, etc, along with land banking etc, cheap land sold by councils to the house builders, then kept and slowly built on, to avoid the house prices from ever falling, along with common areas being held in private contracts, like the strata in North America,
