I actually think this the best book to start with, then you can choose if you want more romantic or disturbing stories. this books is a good mix

Hmm. I loved it. I knew nothing about Mishima before reading this so I have no knowledge of the parallels to his life. But I can't help but wonder what your thoughts are on the following aspects:
    1. Noboru peeping on his mom. What does this mean?
    2. Ryuji talks about his belief in love, how true love can never be attained because death intervenes. Is this an aspect of Bushido?
Also I definitely had a Lord of the Flies feel while reading it

Son has Oedipal relationship with his mum, he feels he owns her, because he's the man of the house; I think Lord Of the Flies was written before this.

I find Mishima a really fascinating character, yet I still haven't picked up one of his books! I really enjoyed this review, great discussion!

Read this in an Icelandic Translation and liked it but it's not his best though.
Have you seen the movie - Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters (1985) ?
I really liked the movie and it has a Brilliant Soundtrack by Philip Glass.

I don’t think this story is so much about the authors extreme nationalist traditional (samurai culture)views or that noboru is a traditionalist mostly because he never mentions loving old japan in this book he and his friends reject all society and social norms they are more nihilists than nationalists I could see maybe how it could be interpreted differently and I read that interpretation review of the book before online however I disagree with that interpretation I think it’s more about the desensitized intelligence and youth that these kids have as well as their fight against maturity it does have a lord of the flies vibe but I loved this book

My thoughts exactly. They came off as nihilistic.

Agree, it's about the eternal youth's hatred of limitation, in rebellion against the archetypical father and banality of the "real" world.

Just finished The sound of waves and I'm about to read The sailor who fell from grace with the sea. Have you read The sound of waves?

    • @bookishsabrina
      @bookishsabrina  5 років тому

No, I haven't finished a Mishima since I read this one several year ago now.

@@bookishsabrina That really is a shame. I'm only 60 pages into Sailor, but it is clearly a much more difficult and dark text compared to The sound of waves, which is so easy to read and is a rather positive book about young romance on a small fishing island. :)

I finished reading it this afternoon and wanted to see what others thought. I enjoyed the nuance of what he was trying to say more than the story itself but I guess that's the point. It's just not my cup of tea.

I don't mind a slow read and you got me when you compared it to Lord of the Flies so this one is intriguing enough for me to add to my TBR.

"the lovely'?! Awww, you sweet nothing. Mishima was definitely an interesting character and you can see his philosophy even in the teeny-tiny, 60-page Patriotism. He romanticizes the story to a point of glory, but it's initially mistaken for a beautifully written tragedy between two people devoted to each other. THAT's the place to start with Mishima.

SteveReadsBooks I am reading Patriotism for my samurai class after Thanksgiving break, so I will let you know how I feel about it! :]

Have you seen the movie based on the book..turned into an erotic thriller with Kris Kristofferson and Sarah Miles?

borderlord I haven't. I tend to stray away from western adaptations of Japanese things, because I tend to not like them. Also, I don't know how enjoyable a version of this book would be as a film regardless...I didn't even know it was a movie!
