    Came into this not sure I'd like it. Looping can be tricky. But these guys NAILED IT. The song itself built up beautifully and the sounds blended together so well and balanced. Great work! :-)

    How are you able to perform the first loop in the video and have Live adapt its tempo to that loop?

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  8 років тому +1

      +Earspasm Music I played that rhythm while listening to Ableton Live's click on my headphones so I was playing to the correct tempo to begin with.

      massive attack likely got the idea for the beat from somewhere else, as great as massive attack are, and quality of their music is high, they didn't invent the things they worked with. Massive attack may not have even invented chords on a guitar, or the electric bass, or hip hop.

    I am absolutely amazed with this video. I've heard it about 100 times this week. It reminds me of the best songs of bonobo, emancipator, blockhead , massive attack ... I have a question for you . How many times have you tried to record the song in this video? Congrats from Madrid for this work. Sorry for my english ;)

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  8 років тому +52

      Hey Angel, Thanks for the kudos! So glad you like the song! To be honest, I don't quite remember how many takes it took us. We did a lot of rehearsals before we started recording so it's a little fuzzy in my memory. It was definitely more than a few though :) Sometimes if you don't hit the loop button just in time you'll miss it and everything goes to shit. That was probably the the trickiest part...and just remembering the whole sequence of what to hit and when. Hope that helps!

    interested in how everything was wired. and which in ear monitoring system was used.

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  9 років тому +2

      +Anthony Cannonier (AntCannStep) everything was routed through the interfaces and locked together via midi in Ableton. The outputs from the interfaces fed into a small mixer so we could monitor each other. The wiring was the most straight forward part of the whole thing. The internal Ableton routing was quite involved though to allow us to seamlessly record, loop and effect the audio. For in ears we used Sure and Ultimate Ears :)

    I went back to watch one of my videos and when it finished the next on autoplay's queue was this one. I didn't noticed what was going on with this video because I got a dual monitor setup and ableton was on both screens, so the sound just came in suddenly, I stopped doing what I was doing and unhurried the browser back in the surface of my screen. Amazing work guys, truly amazing work! You got your self a new subscriber!

    The whole hipster look of the band seems so silly and cliche I couldn't bare to watch the performance. I think for younger people this is going to make a lot more sense. Kids that haven't really been exposed to deeper musicianship, music theory and greater creativity with bands that really did have to stand out to make it in the past. Too simplistic, the looping, cheap reliance on tech, etc. I've seen this done to death. Btw, I am pretty sure I heard this style of song in our Lamaze class while we were being taught breathing exercises to help everyone relax. These guys defiantly get an A+ for at least going thru the motions.

    wonderful piece of music. what are the footcontrollers you use?

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  9 років тому +2

      +laurent kuhn Both trigger pedals we used were basically just set up as note on/note off momentary switches mapped in ableton to start/record and stop the looper. One pedal is just a simple piano sustain type pedal connected via 1/4 jack. The other pedal could have been the same but since we didn't have another one we used the GCX ground control pro to basically do the same thing....a $600 solution for a $20 pedal :) We already had the GCX though so we just made it work. Hope that helps!

      their trigger finger released around 2005. don't think it is worth it for now. better go for maschine, push 2, launchpad, or something else that is newer. just look for drum pad that actually supports velocity (launchpad other than launchpad pro doesn't support that)

    How do you make the Hamer on, on the bass guitar at 2:01 if you have your left hand on the keyboard?

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  9 років тому +5

      +Kapa De Freitas Hey! I'm not hearing the hammer on at 2:01 your talking about. When the bass comes in it's just down picking on the open string and then at about 2:04 I fret the second note without a hammer on. Because the transition happens so fast I actually use my first finger to fret the note with my hand over the top of the neck, then slide my thumb overtop to keep the note fretted and then reach my finger under and around the neck to fret in a traditional fashion to keep playing the rest of the line. In the edit you don't see all happening but at around 2:05 you can see me shifting my arm while doing this. It took me a while to nail this sequence because hitting that second note happens so fast that I didn't have time to reach around from under the neck to fret the string normally. You can actually see how I spot the point on the neck just before so I can get a visual cue for where I need to hit when fretting that second note. Thanks for asking!

    Gorgeous! I have two questions 1) is that a zither?!? and 2) how did you manage to make the guitar and bass loop in Ableton (I can do it but I have major problems with latency - what am I doing wrong?)
    Thanks! x

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  8 років тому +2

      Thanks Patrick! The string instrument is a hammered dulcimer actually. It's somewhat similar to a zither but played differently. Looping the guitar and bass considering latency issues can be challenging. Firstly you need a fast computer able to handle the processing. Secondly you need a low latency interface to minimize lag time. Thirdly, you need to optimize and streamline the effects and software instruments you use in order to tax the CPU as little as possible. And lastly, you need to set your buffer size as small as you possibly can in order to minimize latency. We've been successful at running ours at 64 samples, giving us about a 16 millisecond overall latency. 16 milliseconds is annoying but doable. Best advice is to experiment, tweak, experiment and keep tweaking till you get to where it works for you! Good luck and happy looping!

      +thecloudsbelow so you are recording the loops directly into Live? Would a looper pedal help with latency to record guitar and bass, or would that just complicate matters further. Fascinating to watch songs arranged on the fly like that. How many insert or send fx are you running on the track. Sounds great, brilliant to watch. Cheers

    @kreativtverksted 8 років тому +1

    Awesome! What kind of effects was linked with the microphone? Could you go a little in detail about that. Been wondering how to include a mic with effects in a live set. Thanks!

    • @thecloudsbelow
      @thecloudsbelow  8 років тому +2

      +Sands Kreative Verksted The vocal effects were really basic...just a long reverb, some delay, EQ and a little bit of compression :) We were able to get a really clean mix of the vocals because we were monitoring everything on in ears. Otherwise, had we been monitoring the sound over speakers in the room, we would have gotten a lot of bleed into the vocal mic, which would have repeated every time a vocal phrase was looped

    • @kreativtverksted
      @kreativtverksted 8 років тому +1

      +thecloudsbelow Exactly, nice thanks. Yes that seems to be the problem everytime when doing live looping on stage with PA speakers etc. Just gotta try to get rigged up the longest away you can from the speakers hehe. I heard the song one more time now, great performance guys, very talented and creative. The energy and atmosphere is incredible. One of the better live looping videos on youtube. I subbed so I'm looking forward for more live performances / jams in studio etc. Have a good weekend!

Making this track live isn't something so amazing, also because this track used only one chord so it's a most easiest composition. The dificult thing is making or playing live more tracks and keep a good quality.. I said it because I want to be surprise soon with your news. Thanks!!

    • @thecloudsbelow

      +A. güts It's a Ground Control Pro made by Digital Music Corporation. It's a little excessive for what we needed it for since we were just using it to basically send note on/note off commands. A simple sustain pedal for a keyboard would have sufficed but since it's what I use for guitar, I just set it up to do what I needed it to and went with it. Hope that helps :)

    very impressive cacophony of sound reaching a crescendo peak just before the end, but it illustrates the fallibility of looping regarding key change, that believe it or not, every songwriter who has had a looper has realised.
