I think this is a great way of looking into a lens... the Scientistic way of reviewing is great sometimes, but most people are not interested in pixel by pixel, in a way! I really like the bokeh and there is something nice about a big solid lens! probably it feels like quality! :) Great video again dude! And shoutout to Leif who joined !! :)
Thank you! And yeah I agree, sometimes it’s nice to see the pixel peeping videos, but like you said most of us just want to know if it’s good in the real world. And yeah love the effort put into this lens, feels like it won’t break at all! And of course the quality rocks!😁 Fun doing this with Leif for sure, would be great to join others too☺️
hi James, great video, thx a lot. I have this lens and would like to know, if you have any experience with using a WR protector filter from Sigma. Has it influence on the picture quality ? Would be nice to hear from you !
Honestly I never really use a filter like that, putting cheap glass in front of a high quality lens can take some of the detail away, plus if the filter breaks I can often damage the lens. So I think it comes down to personal taste.
@@CJamesPhoto Thx James, so I should better trust my lens hood, when photographing the riversurfers from close distance. Because at aperture 1,4 it feels, like some of the rasersharpness of the Sigma goes lost with this 220 Euro Sigma Filter. Thx and keep going with your great videos.
Great video, love that you used the lens for several different shots , that's what I would be doing when I get it, not just portraits, loved that forest btw
What's it called when you take a bunch of shots and combine them? For example, you take a shot with 16mm. You take the same frame with many shots of the 105mm and combine them for a sharper image
Thank you 😊 I haven’t used it on the d750 but I have had one, it’s close to what the d850 is but it will be a little slower and obviously lower pixels, but I think it would work nicely on the d750.
A lot of people tall about the potentially problematic combo of a high megqpixel sensor lile the Nikon D850 has and a longer lens with no stabilisation causing blurry images due to hand shaking. What was your experience with this? Did you have to increase shutter speed too much to compensate? Can this combo be used hand held without sacrificing too much light?
Iv had no problems like that at all, i recently used it at a wedding with shutter speeds 1/200s handheld and the images were tack sharp, if your technique is good enough then you should be fine, iv not had to worry about that at all, they only thing iv thought about is if I want movement from my subject or not. This lens has been made with high mpx cameras in mind. I love it :)
It's not just about the mechanics of the lens but also how it's used creatively and you've shown that by capturing some beautiful images with it here. Great video.
What a brilliant video, yes wasn't scientific at all, it was real life - definitely what I'm after -I have this lens and love watching reviews about it and how other use it....it's a very versatile lens - great video man
I'm surprised you didn't even mention the heavy weight of this beast. Was it not cumbersome to use in the field? Image quality is one thing, but if the hand gets tired after 5 minutes it would be a reason for me not to get this monster but perhaps look for the Nikkor of the same kind. What do you think? Thanks for another very entertaining video!
Haha for some reason it didn’t cross my mind, I was so comfortable with the lens that I didn’t mind the weight.. it didn’t tire me out at all. If you are worried about weight then get the Nikon version, but it costs more and the images aren’t as good as the sigma. Thank you :)
Iv had the Sigma 135 1.8 before, and its an awesome lens! But after getting the 105 art it’s become my favorite. But I must say they are quite similar, but I feel as tho the 105mm has better auto focus.
Hi CJ awesome video and thank you for posting it. I am very interested in this lens however I was wondering how is the focusing? Does it focus hunt a lot and is it a better choice than the Nikon 105mm? Thank you.
No problem :) it’s an excellent lens to have, iv used it in quite a few different situations including a wedding this past weekend, not once did I get any kind of hunting during the process, which really surprised me. Iv had the Nikon 105mm before and I’ll never go back, it’s not as sharp across the whole frame, af is slower and I had hunting on that. Plus the Nikon is more expensive.
@@CJamesPhoto I have to disagree about the Nikkor vs Sigma 105mm f/1.4. The Sigma is marginally sharper but sharpness is massively over rated in modern cameras. Bokah the Nikkor is smoother, though also does suffer from serious cats eyes at f/1.4, Vignetting the Sigma wins, CA I would say they are similar. AF I have never had issues with the Nikkor hunting. Yes, price wise the Sigma is a lot better but personally I would go with the Nikker every day of the week just because, the Sigma lens weighs a ton 700g heavier than the Nikkor is a silly comparison. Also I just haven't been impressed with the micro contrast of the Sigma (as with most Sigma lenses), the images just have no pop, unless you do a lot to them in post. The Nikkor is much better, just coming in slightly behind the 85mm Milvus.
@@MichaelLaing71 You have some good points there, but i wonder if that would be different with each copy, the one i had was not that good and i had some problems with it, so at least for me and what i know then the Sigma is so much better.. but yes the weight isnt always fun to have. maybe i should give another Nikon version a go, Thanks for your comment :)
Excellent review. I would like to have seen more of the photos you took. What I would like to see you do is a “Mastering the Bokeh Master,” series with this incredible lens. Use it in all types of environments and conditions for all types of photography. You’re a very good teacher and I think this could give you a a specialty area of teaching that could set you apart and grow your channel. In any event, thanks for this review! BTW, I bought this lens just several days ago and am real happy with it so far.
Not sure why you re-sent the message.... But anyway thank you very much, I had posted a link under to show the photos I took in the video :) And maybe I will do some more video on it at some point, I have used it in a few other videos but not about the lens. Thanks for the kind words ☺️
Thanks🙏🏻 Well all the shots in the video where take wide open at f1.4, I left a link below if you want to see the photos :) But yes they are definitely sharp enough☺️
THANK YOU! Nobody else seems to have action shots with this lens. I would love to see the two sequences of the motorbike portion. Anywhere i can view them all?
CJamesPhoto It does a little bit. I shoot action sports primarily. ART lenses are meant for one purpose, but i tend to push limits. With this lens being less than my 150-600 C, and larger than my 17-50 2.8, it would be a good fit, but at the same time, a little more and the 120-300 would work as well. Tough dilemma for me.
Yeah I tend to do the same, if I can’t push my lenses then they aren’t really good enough 😁 Hmm you have a pretty interesting dilemma there, will take quite a bit of thinking for sure, glad I could be of some service tho 👍🏻
Saw your videos after I posted that. I’ve been debating about switching to Sony from Nikon as well, after watching this and using one last night - I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I have a D700, D800 and a D3 and lots of glass.
The Sigma is cheaper then the Nikon, it also produces better images, sharpness, bokeh and CA are much better controlled.. and even the AF is much more precise as faster then the Nikon. Iv had the Nikon version before but didn’t like it at all.
Fair enough, The angry photog hates it as well. I am glad you at least tried it out so I now have an honest comparison recommendation. As I already own a 85mm and a 135 mm prime I was never going to by one. but I am still grateful for the information. Tony and Chelcey like it the Nikon one I mean, but I think they value payments/ kickbacks more than honesty.
Haha yeah he does, thanks well that’s what I was trying to make sure I did, give people an honest review whiteout it being sponsored etc.. Well the 85 and 135 are great lenses, I’d certainly get the 135 again but now I don’t think I need to. Hard to say with them as they do get sponsored for a lot of their gear. And at the end of the day everyone likes something more then another.
With regards to those two, It`s fine to have a personal preference, but if that sways thousands of people to by an expensive Dud, well thats not right or fair at all.
The 105mm has a shallower depth of field so that can make it seem not as sharp, but yeah I think the 135mm does have that little extra pop you are talking about. Honestly they are very close, the 105 is bigger and heavier so that’s something to think about. Iv had both and I’d be happy to have either one
Really enjoyed the video. A real life review in outside conditions is something that gives us a clear idea about the lens.
Keep up the good work!🙌
Thank you very much, glad it was helpful and that I reviewed it well enough 😁
