I’ve been using a Canon EF mount on my Sony A9 & A7R3 for some time now, and am very happy with its performance. I personally think it lives up with its bokeh master name rendering bokeh differently (softer) from Sigma 85 & 135 Art. And even more surprising is that it works amazingly well on Fujifilm GFX50S without any vignetting!

This lens is weather sealed throughout: "Like SIGMA’s Sports line lenses (Move to our UA-cam page), the 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art features a highly effective dust- and splash-proof structure with special sealing at the mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, and cover connection, allowing photographers to work in all types of weather. In addition, the front of the lens is protected by a water- and oil-repellent coating that makes cleaning easy. The high-speed, high-accuracy autofocus helps photographers react in an instant to get those special shots."
I've just started to use it the last week. I love it in the studio for products and portraits but the size cannot be over-stated - especially for a guy who uses all primes. I have already left it at home a few times for events. I'm also a fit 40 year old - its mostly about the space it takes in the bag. I'm still glad I bought it but it won't be the event lens I hoped it was.
Evelyn & Dave, Price! No mention of price in comparison to similar or as close as possible popular lens on the market. Beautiful pictures and I enjoy the reviews with you two doing them together, good perspective.
I'm coming back to the channel after Chris and Jordan left for DPReview, and I'm really glad they picked the hosts that they did. Talented photographers, really pleasing to hear voices with great intonation, this is super informative and relaxing at the same time. Love you all, will always stay subscribed!
Thanks for the review, I did not realise how big of a monster it was before watching your video. Not a lens I am planing to own, but still a great piece of glass. You guys are doing great video after video!
I picked this lens up a couple of days for my travels to the Philippines where I do lots of portrait photography and I reallyn had not a chance to test is out other then photographing flowers in my back yard, so I took it to church with me this past sunday and I was just doing some random shots from the balacony and when I came home and uploaded the images to light Room and zoomed in 1.1 I was just blown away at the sharpness from 15 to 20 feet away and up in the balacony, this is a very sharp lens and the color is beautiful, it is very heavy but I can live with that considering the images I got and the sharpness I can't wait to get to China and the Philippines in December and really do some shooting with it, the best 1300 dollars I have spent in a long time I love it and plan on getting the Sigma 135mm f/1.8.....GREAT LENS
Loved the video, Quality seems to be a bit better than old videos, so kudos. I would love to shoot with the 105 1.4 but what about the 135 1.8, it smaller and addition of 20 mm to focal length should add to the Bokeh effect, and it's cheaper. What do your guys say about it? I mean you used both lenses I think. Leave a reply. Thanks
Hi, I purchased this lens in the UK as soon has it was released. I have already given high praise to quality and sharpness on this large piece of glass. I am 68 and do not have the steadiest of grip. However, 9 pineapples and a few cherries. After shooting over 6,700 images with this lens on my Nikon D500 and D850 cameras. I have achieved over 90% sharpness. I have over 20 nikkors, mostly prime and achieve far less success. TonyH
I can clearly see you guys are working hard improving your presentation. because as of this moment I'm really loving it Keep up the great work you two now I can focus on the gear review
Love the color grading in the bar. Very nice look. Looking at a lens that big and heavy at that focal length doesn't make me want to go full frame, that's for sure! I'll stick to Micro Four Thirds.
I have an R6II + RF 50mm f1.8. I will buy this Sigma 105mm f1.4 for when I want to take that special photo that no other will be able to do like. It's worth keeping this.
Well One thing worrh mentioning is dropping ultra fast lenses down to f2 or lower Its probably where i would start for faces.... Not a “ have too” or should more of an “easier “ Still at 100mm f2 you are getting great bokeh but more face in focus in your one eye example I have an old nikor 105. 2.5 Much lighter obviously but i wonder at optical qualities past resolution between lenses Contrast etc GREAT job guys!!! Keep up the reviews
Looks like a really great long portrait lens, but one I'm not likely to own, given that there's no K-mount version. That, and the price. Still, those shots where you nailed focus were really stunning.
I am not sure I would give it 9 out of 10, that weight takes it down a little, especially if you compare it to the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4e. Optically it may be have slightly better bokah (particularly cats eyes (a real pity you didn't test that comparison) but the weight is an issue over a long days shooting. Also the filter situation is a pain, with the Nikkor you have a couple of lenses with an 82mm thread, so it is easier to justify getting a 0.9 ND decent filter (and you will need one at f/1.4, in bright sunshine (also it is easy to just use a step up ring with 77 to 82mm, it is a bit more of a pain for a 105mm step up ring)
It's an amazing lens, but I'm happy with my decision to go for the 135 1.8 - I like the longer focal lenght more, but besides that, 1.6kg and that filter size are beyond reasonable for me. And I'm used to heavy glass (my kit is a 24-35 f/2 and the 135 1.8) but too far is too far :') Plus, the 135 is more analytical, less aberrations.
Good review, I just felt like the more you talked about the 'qualities' of the lens the more I don't want it. Just about any 1.4 lens is gonna have great DOF. You're using a monopod with it because it doesn't have IS? And it's not weather sealed either? And it requires a humongous UV filter? No thanks, you can keep it. Thanks for the review.
question i here sigma are lenses miss focus a lot on canon dslr and i do not want to spend that kind of money to have keep tuning a lense can give me some info please
Yes. This Art lens features a "highly effective dust- and splash-proof structure with special sealing at the mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, and cover connection." But, it is not fully waterproof. We still would not have trusted the lens or the cameras the way the rain was coming down that day. We should have explained that in more detail.
I liked this episde, well made TCSTV! But...... Noone will buy this lens, except the beginner "photographers" who are obsessed about bokeh. They don't realize that there is only slight difference in bokeh between this and the 85 1.4 Art, which can be purchased for 850 USD, and weights much less. So what's practical about a lens with this size, weight, and no IS? Either you limit your work speed and creativity with a monopod, or you try to hand hold this for a few hours and your wrist will fall off. As your arm get tired, it will shake more, so another fail for not having IS. Not only it looks VERY intrusive with it gigantic front element, in my opinion it's pretty ugly design when you attach the lens hood. So yeah, usability, looks, price, all fail with this lens. Quick sidenote: you get significantly more bokeh with the 135 1.8 Art, due to the compression. For half the size, weight and price.
The reason people might want this lens is because they want the focal length as well as the bokeh, and possibly also low-light performance, from f104. 105mm is a good in-between 85 and 135 if you want to shoot with one prime and go between head shots and full body. There are some who also feel that 105 is just the right amount of compression for portraits with 85 not being enough and 135 being too much. Every lens has its place. I have this lens (and also have 85 and 135 lenses) and I didn’t buy it for the bokeh but rather for the focal length, the low-light performance, and the image quality (which is why it’s so much bigger than the Nikon 105 which is nowhere near as good).
We are finding that recording our local radio ads have been helping us become more aware. But, it's more difficult than I expected to break some of our speaking habits.
nice review.. but according Sigma's website the lens is weather sealed or weather resistant.. did you guys find something different? www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/art/a_105_14/features/
It is splash proof and has the special sealing at the mount connection that we mentioned. But, we have been very nervous about taking non-fully waterproof products in the pouring rain. That being said, we should have explained that more.
Way too big and gawdy looking. Guess it makes the photographer feel better to anyone looking at them and not knowing that it is just ridiculous. Not sure why she said it was a beast because its optical quality is amazing. Guess better glass needs to be heavier and gigantic. And it takes screw on filters. Wonderful, if you care to buy a giant 105mm filter for a specialized lens. Only good thing they did was carve an arca swiss plate in to the tripod mount, even though a 105 shouldn't need a tripod mount.
I don't really like the super-fussy shallow DOF below f2 on full frame. If your AF is off at all, the eyes aren't sharp. If they're not dead on at the camera, one of the eyes is out of focus. It's not really worth the extra bokeh to me.
I guess having 1.4 even shooting at f/2 and above will benefit you as well, as you’re a full stop from wide open and hopefully sharpness will improve by then too
If a lens of that quality isn’t weather sealed the sigma engineers need to jump off something above a safe height. Maybe check your info.... seems very odd.

The copy of 105mm f/1.4 is owned by a 1DXii owner. We've exchanged the 85mm and 105mm on both Sony a9 and 1DXii. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 was faster on both bodies. No idea about how it performs on the D5 in comparison, but I've seen tests here in Taiwan where the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 is faster than the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 on a D850 body.
Disclaimer: at the 4:00 mark, we indicate that the lens is not weather sealed. However, Sigma says this lens has a "dust-and splash-proof structure".
Well done, the two of you. Vocalization getting clearer and more confident each episode

What monopod are you using? I just returned my Sigma 135mm and may get this but it’s huge.

Does the manual focus ring on the F-mount version rotate in the same direction as Nikon lenses?
I can’t think of a less practice lens to take to shoot a festival! 😂
It would be interesting to review this lens vs. standard f/2.8 zooms such as 70-200 mm.
The 5Ds-r's sensor is very unforgiving. Some of these shots are not as sharp as I've seen in other reviews. DOF or camera shake?
Good review and samples, along with responsible caveats. Well done, both of you.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback.

Looks like a really great long portrait lens, but one I'm not likely to own, given that there's no K-mount version. That, and the price. Still, those shots where you nailed focus were really stunning.

OMG thinking of the neck strain with that monster lens and a full frame DSLR with that package around your neck. 😳
I agree. That is the reason I use Black Magic products. Really helps deal with the weight of that lens over the course of a day.

The Son of Cotton Candy by Evelyn Magritte.
Disappointed that you would overlook one of this unique lens' most essential features: that the tripod mount doubles as a bubble-blowing ring...!
Haha. Darn, we missed that feature. ;)
Those pair look like they're a handful to hold! 😘
The DOF is to small for a profile portrait shots though, they look out of focus :v
Articulation still needs to be needs to be improved (investing in some vocal coaching would be money well spent) , but better than previously 👍

There's no reason a 105mm lens without stabilization should be that big...
I also hate physics
Other than the F/1.4 aperture and physics, no.
The Nikon 105 isn’t anywhere near as big they could have made it smaller
Foxtrot is the Nikon version not a 1.4 ? Is it not ? Because the Nikon version is significantly smaller.

No idea about how it performs on the D5 in comparison, but I've seen tests here in Taiwan where the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 is faster than the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 on a D850 body.
Canadians are wonderful but this video is not.
Monopod is good idea for female photographers.
