Ari is an OG musical theatre girl as we all know, but when you're performing in music videos, concerts, etc., you're really asked to get that 'musical theatre style' out of you to be taken seriously as a pop performer. So true that the SAME is true once you're once again expected to *act* while singing, and be 100% fully believable, even in close up. That's hard. I can't imagine how intimidating it would've felt to be cast opposite Cynthia Erivo, who's been murdering every role she's been given since THE COLOR PURPLE revival. I love the fact that Jon M. Chu won't put a performance on the screen that doesn't feel honest, which is why he's exactly the right director for this musical. Very very excited to see this!

Chu who had never disappointed us with his phenomenal films like Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights...Good news Wendy and Dustin I have a coworker/castmate that I previously worked with as a performer at Walt Disney World who is currently in the Broadway production of Wicked playing as the popular Fiyero right now. I think it has been going on 3 years now.
This was the show (other than the lion king) that made me fall in love with musical theatre. I'm kind of excited, especially since they've got two of my favorite vocalists playing the lead roles. I absolutely adore Cyntha Erivo for her work in the Color Purple and Ariana's a pop icon, I've been listening to her for many years. To see all of it come together like this is really amazing.
It looks very well directed, which I’m happy about it needed that. Also apparently they used as much practical effects and sets as they possibly could, which is why it looks so stunning
I'm just really hoping that Chu did his homework incorporating the Time Dragon somewhere in the film because it an important symbol the whole story basically goes around.

I think they are purposefully hiding the music from us, one because there are new songs and two, because that's one of the main things fans are excited for! Like I know I'm almost more excited for the cast album than I am the movie. With popular (lol) and powerhouse vocals like they cast, I just know the music is going to dominate so I think it's smart to keep all the fans guessing what the cast will do with the music and the new music. Ugh, I'm so excited and I cried both during the featurette and the trailer, so I get it haha
@@jpcastrianni while that’s generally true, I think those movies were also based on existing properties that weren’t musicals in the past (even though yes, I know, MG was based on the broadway show) while nearly *every* iteration of Oz HAS been a musical, so I think that makes less sense as a reason here. Yes, I’m sure they don’t want to overdo it to scare people who don’t like musicals off generally, but I think they have other motives as well in this case.
I kinda wish that they would release the first part next year so we wouldn’t have to wait a year for the second part I’m so excited and I haven’t even seen the original musical, it just looks stunning
I've tried watching a bootleg of the musical and felt so lost and couldn't get into it. This film looks amazing and something a visual inclined person can understand and I can't wait to see it.
i feel like Ariana’s Glinda is far more dialed down than any of the Broadway interpretations of her. at least in this trailer it seems that way. i hope she’s still bubbly and eccentric in this movie, especially because this will be a lot of non-Broadway people’s first and only understanding of this character.

There is a girl by the name of Beau Dermott - who would be great as Ephaba, she was on AGT singing Defying Gravity & was perfect!!!! ( Will not see it with this cast though). Not liking that Cynthia who ever she is!
I’m definitely going to watch it but I really didn’t like that belt at the end of the trailer, seemed strained or not clear….? Not a vocal expert so idk but it sounded weird
I'm still on the fence about Ariana. I know she was mentored by Kristen for a long time for this and I honestly feel like a lot of her line delivery is more of an impersonation, down to the vocal fry and southern accent, which are not the way Ariana talks. The very first time I heard the opening lines I was convinced it was Chenoweth doing a random, odd, voiceover to start the trailer. It's the EXACT way Kristen sounds. Down to the inflection and vocal fry and accent. It's such an imitation it kinda makes me worried. She then seems to lose this in scenes where she isn't directly quoting lines from the show. On those lines she sounds like regular, whispy, mumbly, light voiced Ariana. So, I'm still not totally convinced by her, yet. But she does seem to be doing much better than I expected. Cynthia is perfection as always and expected. No notes.
I continue to hate how Hollywood is promoting and marketing musicals. By my count that's now Wonka, Mean Girls, and Wicked that have trailers where they don't promote the fact that it's a musical.
I don’t like the way they are singing the songs, so over done, so horrible. Also don’t like the casting. I love the show and I wanted to see the movie, but I just can’t stand the casting.

I would have casted Idina Menzel, Kirsten Chenawith, and Adam Lambert. People who know how to play the parts since they perfected them on Stage. They would have been so much better than the ones they cast in this movie, especially Ariana Grande. Her voice is just annoying.

It has been found that when they market a movie as a musical, it doesn’t do well. That’s why Wonka and Mean Girls weren’t marketed as musicals.
