I often wonder if today's programmers know that there are millions of us watching 60 year old programs rather than hold back streams of vomit when attempting to view today's television offerings? Man, Groucho has been dead since 1977 and You Bet Your Life is a sample of what was once great TV. Funny, intelligent and brilliant it was and after six decades, it's as fresh as ever. Today, when it comes to prime time fare, all one can do is wonder what spoiled bitch the "Bachelor" will be hosing for a month or two after the competing HOs have been shuttled back to Neverland.
I must disagree. Many people think this is a golden age of television. There are MANY good shows, but unfortunately most of the best are on cable (like HBO or Showtime) or subscription TV (like Netflix or Hulu). Yes, there is dreck, but there was dreck in the 50's, too (remember Space Cadet?) Groucho was a special guy and that's why I'm watching this; there was never anyone like him before or since. But that doesn't mean other people have no value. I watch lots of TV and have never seen The Bachelor (or The Bachelorette, for that matter). There's enough good stuff that I can safely ignore the crap.
robert glenn Hm, maybe network tv, but across cable, Netflix, Amazon, and UA-cam there are an unbelievable number of series' that will go down as classics. Far outnumbering what the 50s produced. But agreed, probably not on basic tv.
As a kid I didn't understand a bit of the discussion or jokes. My parents roared with laughter. Dad is 97 and he will enjoy seeing this again I'm sure.
Yes, I can see how it would appear odd to someone from the UK. That's just how TV worked here in that era. The commercials and mentions of the sponsor were sometimes integrated into the programs, and even when they weren't, the stars of the shows often appeared in commercial segments.
The second contestant, Shirley J. Lestelle (1928 - 1999), is my all time favorite. She moved near me -- to Grass Valley, CA -- I would have gone to see her if I knew. Groucho was at his best in this show.
Excuse me if anyone has already mentioned this but an interesting production fact is that in order to do a show straight through, six cameras were used to allow for changing 35mm film every 10 or 11 minutes.

It popped just now after I was looking at a UA-cam hockey video.
Magic.
I did live back then. We would always watch this show.
George has such a sonorous voice. very relaxing
Could probably have made a good hypnotist.
smoog weird eyebrows
Yes, I just started listening to old radio shows like "Gunsmoke" and "Dragnet", and the announcer during the commercial breaks was George Fenneman for "Lucky Strike" and "Chesterfield" cigarettes!
@@themadbadger2920 His voice is so great.
@smoog, I LEARNED a NEW word today! :P
A great program, real people. Groucho at his best ☺
Yup, nuthin' like real FAKE peoples!
I'm a spinster from choice..... Is that near Oakland? Lololol
LOL
That's actually an old world way of saying "I could be lesbian or just not interested in marriage "
Never thought I'd see the day when Groucho would get owned ;-)
What do you mean by owned?
Didn't know he was.
@@christineforbing5302
It's an expression; it's been around for years.
That has to be the only time anyone actually made him ditch the cigar on the show.
He had it coming
@@christineforbing5302 It kind of means "one-upped" or "was bested by." It's been a phrase mostly with online video game playing since maybe 1999 - 2005, and I don't understand how it got started.
encomium (plural encomiums): glowing and warmly enthusiastic praise.
I have nothing but encomiums for Groucho's inimitable wit and quiz master prowess! I can't believe how marvellous these old shows are! My best UA-cam find to date!
Glad you're enjoying the videos! This is the most complete collection of YBYL episodes you'll find anywhere (minus 36 eps released on DVD by Shout Factory over 10 years ago).
Miss Sackett rules
When I was growing up, this show was already very old. I was too young to know the answers to the questions asked by Groucho, but recognized his genius (and kindness). His shows had already aired before I was born. It always gave me a curious feeling of deja vu that kind of scared me but mostly made me realize that the world has been around for a long time, that we are part of something bigger than ourself.
Hello Susan👋, How are you doing?
I don’t care if this was staged, it was smooth as silk!
Annie reminds me of my grandma. She was tall, I saw pictures of her in the same clothing, and she was shy...yet witty.
*I used to watch this when I was a kid (born in 1952), and loved it! Thanks for the post!*
I was just a kid but this was on our TV schedule. Our kids missed it all. I was 5 years old, oh my!!!
"are you busy tonight?"
"yes"
Reminds us how great Groucho was as a straight man -- that's the role he played opposite Chico and Harpo in the movies, and he fell into it elegantly here.
One of Groucho's less obvious strengths on YBYL was that he knew when to lay back and let the contestants take center stage.
Mary was born in 1876. What a terrific interaction between her and Groucho. Groucho was the very best comedian👌👏
My father was a DeSoto Plymouth dealer. We never missed this program.
Thanks!! Love these old days
I'm so glad the little old lady won $90 dollars .
Geography was a terrible category for a guy from Australia. Ms. Sagette saved that team
$90 was about$900 then. Almost enough to buy a Groucho Special at your local DeSoto Plymouth dealer. There might not be many left.
Groucho was the best. Yes he was
a very witty intellegent man.
A little intimidating.. Johnny Carson still rules!
A creep
You can see your picture on Facebook when I am so thankful I am happy
one of the most funny comedian highlights in a TV show - ever!
May you always be remembered Groucho, as a great comedian, Where would this world be without him.
Never get enough of Groucho! Brings back a carefree time of my life. I was 15 years old.
groucho had a very clear & calm speaking voice
What a lovely show. Groucho in response to money being insured in the bank: "Have you heard that the Federal Government is about 280 billion dollars in the hole?"
Priceless! We are still broke just, so much more!

Indeed she was!

You are right Bianca, all the ignorant people that don't want to have to think LOVE today's TV shows.
Watch Dirk Gently, and then try not to think about it. Good luck.
Yes, there are idiots too
robert glenn Hm, maybe network tv, but across cable, Netflix, Amazon, and UA-cam there are an unbelievable number of series' that will go down as classics.
Far outnumbering what the 50s produced.
But agreed, probably not on basic tv.
Groucho meets his match.. This is classic. Big thanks for uploading.
It’s a pleasant surprise for Groucho when he comes across someone with as much wit as him.
As a kid I didn't understand a bit of the discussion or jokes. My parents roared with laughter. Dad is 97 and he will enjoy seeing this again I'm sure.
To a British viewer it's incredible to see Groucho in the course of a programme, plugging a commercial organisation.
Yes, I can see how it would appear odd to someone from the UK. That's just how TV worked here in that era. The commercials and mentions of the sponsor were sometimes integrated into the programs, and even when they weren't, the stars of the shows often appeared in commercial segments.
Podcast hosts are doing it again
The second contestant, Shirley J. Lestelle (1928 - 1999), is my all time favorite. She moved near me -- to Grass Valley, CA -- I would have gone to see her if I knew. Groucho was at his best in this show.
Notice that in the De Soto commercial they tell you WHY you ought to own one, appealing to your smarts instead of your emotions.
Excuse me if anyone has already mentioned this but an interesting production fact is that in order to do a show straight through, six cameras were used to allow for changing 35mm film every 10 or 11 minutes.
You DO NOT want to miss this! This little old lady owns Grouch like a BOSS! But I gotta tell you, he showed RESPECT for women which we completely do not see today. Absolutely enjoyable to watch :)
YOU ARE RIGHT THERE IS NO RESPECT FOR WOMEN FROM TRUMP. HE IS A DISGUSTING HUMAN WHOSE MOUTH NEEDS TO BE WASHED OUT TO ELIMINATE HIS CRUDE AND HURTFUL WORDS HE SPEWS.
