You Bet Your Life #57-10 Debating the merits of Rock & Roll (Secret word 'Grass', Dec 12, 1957)

- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- John Charles Thomas & Roberta Rene return from last week to debate Rock and Roll music. Once again, Thomas steps down from the quiz segment in favor of a serviceman from the audience, Corporal Bob Pepin.
NOTE: Most of the quiz segment for the 1st couple was lost due to recording glitch. The rest of the interview is intact. Also, please note that the audio and video go progressively out of synch starting around 8 minutes in. I couldn't fix it, but it's not too distracting until the very end. Sorry for these problems!
COUPLE #1: Kathy Gabriel, Miss Ohio / Val Christensen, mayor of Cheyenne, WY
COUPLE #2: Roberta Rene, president of the Elvis Presley Fan Club / John Charles Thomas, famous baritone

That strap falling down was an amazing eye grabber; a classic.
I love the honest and flattering reactions Groucho always gives pretty young women. This was before a compliment of a woman’s femininity was interpreted as harassment.
Every woman appreciates the adoration of men. That’s what these feminists miss. Kathy passed away three years ago, and seemed to have aged gracefully with time, not fighting old age by competing with young women for men’s attention.
I’m so glad she married well and seem to have had a satisfying life🤗

I hope she had a chance to read these comments before she passed. She was my next-door neighbor for a year and I was close to her family for many years. She became a bleached blonde and after flirting with fame returned to her hometown of Cleveland.
People appear to be more respectful & choose what they say more thoughtfully. Very refreshing. Groucho is a master quick thinker, makes it all come together for unique entertainment.
Good observation. And most folk today receive so many statements with deliberately instant negativity also.
Thanks Sentinel of fortune. And your comment about how negative people can be is unfortunately true.

Amazing to realize that today, Miss Ohio would be considered too "fat" to even think about entering a beauty contest. I'm not disparaging here; she's a very beautiful woman. Just observing how ridiculous the body standards for women have become over the years.
David Whiteis Really? According to feminists obesity is beautiful. Instead of promoting a healthy lifestyle, apparently now u don’t have to worry about your health just as long as you love your body. Hell, today we even have men entering women’s beauty pageants lol
Kathy had an hour glass figure sort of like marilyn monroe, today they would tell her to lose weight, but she was very beautiful just like that.

Woah... two people can disagree on TV and still be nice to each other, without any yelling?? This is amazing.
Groucho was quick-witted and knew where to draw the line with adult humor.
Oh he skirted the censorship line many times.
And for all of the beauty contestant air, Miss Ohio was clearly not going to put up with him beyond a certain point.
@1Skeptik1 Yes, he made a conscious point of working with insinuation & double-entendre, jokes where the "dirty part" was understood in the imagination of the listener, without spelling it out explicitly.
Groucho was outspokenly against profanity & raw vulgarity in humor; he was actually disgusted by that, & would never have touched the kind of humor of a Lenny Bruce, or even Mel Brooks.
In one of his Dick Cavett interviews he spoke out this issue.
He did draw a line, occasionally drawing it a bit further or a bit closer, but essentially, his approach was perched right on the narrow borderline between bawdy, provocative humor & tasteful restraint.

Hard to believe but when they were filming this they were in the middle of a pandemic the way we are now. The Asian Flu of 1957-58 killed between 70,000 and 116,000 Americans. It came from China too. It did die and progressed into rock .
A footnote to add about Kathy Gabriel and Elvis Presley. Reportedly, Kathy was his girlfriend for a time in 1958. In fact, at one time Elvis also dated one of the other entrants in the same Miss Universe contest which Kathy competed for, Hannerl Melcher (Miss Vienna/Miss Austria). On at least one occasion, both beauties were his guest at Graceland at the same time. Apparently, the two women were roommates at one time (perhaps just during pageant activity in Long Beach, CA: the Miss USA pageant was held only two days before the Miss Universe pageant).
Here's a picture of all three, 15 days after Kathy's episode of YBYL aired. Kathy seems less perturbed by the situation in this picture. As far as I can tell, Kathy supplanted Hannerl as Elvis's girlfriend, so perhaps something was already brewing that day. Then again, girlfriends came and went pretty quickly for Elvis in those days, and he knew his army induction was just a matter of time.

There are a few other pictures from that day and other pictures of Kathy and Elvis that can be accessed if you do a Google Images search for "Kathy Gabriel Miss Ohio".
Kathy did not represent the U.S. in the Miss Universe pageant. She was originally 5th runner up in the Miss USA pageant, and then raised one place when the original winner was dethroned. (Leona Gage representing Maryland was found to already have two children and had already been married twice when she won.) Hannerl failed to reach the semi-final stage (top 15) in the worldwide Miss Universe contest which was won by Gladys Zender of Peru.
Here's a very chummy picture of Elvis alone with Kathy on that same day, 12/27/57.

I wonder if the trip to Graceland was already in the works when the YBYL episode was filmed. If so, I can imagine Kathy listening with amusement to the Elvis debate. Roberta Rene would have lost her mind if she knew she was sharing a stage with someone who would visit Elvis at Graceland so soon after the show. Don't be fooled by her age: groupies can be any age.
And to give some equal time to Hannerl, here's some chummy photos of her alone with Elvis in 1957.

It's a unidirectional trend. Bathing suits have, as a matter of course, transformed into regular wear with about a 1-2 generation time lag. The halter top was originally for sun bathing.
