For that "Chemistry expert question," no, it makes no sense what so ever. Like at all. Selenium in itself is acutely toxic, but it is also an essential nutrient. So, considering that, the logic the people used within the movie make no sense scientifically. Like... Yeah, it can be toxic if you bombard people with it, but, so can a majority of elements.
When I first saw this movie on vhs as a small child I was so immediately terrified I destroyed the tape and never told my parents. Years later I would watch it on it’s dvd release and became immediately obsessed with the awesome creatures, fantastic score, and quotable comedy. This video brings back so many good nostalgic memories watching this with my dad. The scene where Wayne does his bird call got us every single time!

There's a cartoon about it! And I seen the cartoon before the movie.
I just found this channel and immediately subscribed. Very funny! But has anyone ever mentioned you sorta resemble a younger Roger Ebert? Wait a minute...and you, also, review movies. Hmmm...
"Cells are bad. My uncle lives in a cell. It's ten foot by twelve and he has to read the same old, boring magazine everyday. The end." Sponsored by the selenium lobby.
Also a creature the size of the mega organism would have die in literally an hour. As it’s own bulk would crush its organs, and if not that, the level of calories needed to run a creature with that level of bulk and biomass would require it to constantly feed. Like whales the food source would have to be massive and or the animal would need a metabolism able to self regulate, like most mammals. So just keep the mega creature away from a food source for an hour or two and it will starve. This is why the super organisms and mega-mammals of the Permian era died off. Lack of available nutrients to support their size
I saw this movie in theaters with my mom as a kid! I thought everyone had forgotten about it! Thanks for this review. My biggest memory of this film is my mom laughing at the Head and Shoulders bit. She passed away from cancer in 2015, but she loved the humor in this.
This movie was awesome! The ending made me think what if the asteroid, they came in was actually a planet with life like on Earth. However they were smaller. They used fire to "destroy" them, then they got destroyed. Since the giant creatures look exactly like the microscopic ones.
Weirdly, this is still one of my favourite films. It's just so innocent and harmless, and the slightly over the top humour is just such easy watching. "Mazel tov, it's a boy", "great googamooga" and "Wayne, I think we've established that kakar kakar and tookie tookie don't work" all still regularly get quoted by my sister and I. What a classic silly film.
Evolution turns 20 today ! Missed it in theaters but I remember renting the vhs I actually saw parts of it in middle school Ivan Reitman combines sci-fi and laughs Love David Ducovnhy, Julianne Moore, Orlando Jones, and Sean-William Scott there are actually a decent amount of laughs given how nicely-timed the jokes are written it aint a masterpiece like Reitman's most well-known outing but it has a delectable charm and some realistic science-fiction to go with it Love the two big cameos here too!
So I am not a chemist, but I do deal in biology of invertebrates. Assuming the creature are able to become tolerant of an oxygen atmosphere within a month of exposure. Then they wouldn’t be found of fire. As fire burns, or more accurately consumes oxygen. Meaning the same rules of fire apply to humans as well as the creatures. So if the breed quickly in fire, that means they use the heat to accelerate their metabolism, like reptiles. It also means they have cellular regeneration at a point they can make up what the fire destroys. This would entail fire to still work as you basically force their body’s metabolism into overdrive and the run out of calories and die.
I love this movie. I will always love this movie. By the way, they *tried* to turn this into a franchise. There was a very short-lived animated series.
I remember having a weird conflict with this film. First it scared me, then I'd come back with interest, get scared away then come right back. It was equivalent to a cat checking out a beetle scuttling on the carpet.
I remember watching the movie when I was younger and totally freaking out over the "creature inside of human body" situation. Traumatized me for years, even though it's a comedy😂
I had vague memories of this movie from when I was a kid. All I remembered was the scene where the alien dragon became oxygen tolerant and the clip of the space bug creeping under the dude's skin which gives me the heebie jeevies

This movie was actually written as a Ghostbusters sequel, but fell apart, so it was made into this. Did anyone ever wonder why all the creatures that were "evolving" suddenly de-evolved into a single cell organism, at the end? Eh...
Basically Head and shoulders contacted the guy behind Ghostbusters and was like hey can you make a movie that's a commercial for Head and shoulders that also puts head shoulders at a position to save the planet and then this movie happened
I heard this actually started as a Ghostbusters 3 concept that was later changed in to its own thing. Not sure how true it is but I definitely read that somewhere along time ago, before the internet. The dark times.

I have seen this movie a lot and just realized the fire at the beginning would have speed up the evolution at least some considering it is latter mentioned fire speeds up it's evolution/growth.
I know that you're probably never going to see this, but I have to say. I have no idea how a sequel to this movie would work at all. There's only 2 ideas I can see. 1. Another meteor comes and hits Earth, but at that point it's just how long before the humans smother the aliens they know how to defeat with shampoo. 2. A different alien species, but it would be the same movie, just with a different species. We just would wait until our main characters find their weakness. Neither sounds appealing.
I think it's one of those movies that don't need a sequel. Maybe a spinoff where some aliens survived and live on earth now, but it would still ultimately be a re-tread.
Yes, there was a sequel and it was a loose cartoon adaptation called ‘Alienators: Evolution Continues’ produced by DIC Entertainment in September of the same year. Nearly exact same scenario like @theNewBee said; it had the aliens survive on Earth. It was very much a Ghostbusters clone.
Duchovny was horribly miscast in this. He just doesnt have the energy or comic timing to carry it off. The film wound up feeling like an xfiles episode trying to be the twilight zone.
