Appreciate you always supporting man! Just tryna help folks out. And yes, there’s definitely something to be said about grading from scratch! LUTs are amazing but sometimes tweaking around and dialing in the look you want from a blank slate is the way.
@@petersarellas i have one more question, what is your opinion about gopro cameras when it comes to sports videography? (1st problem is they suck in low light condition...i know that haha)
@@Allen7 I wouldn’t use a GoPro as a main camera on sports shoots as for sports you usually need something with a long focal length and GoPro’s are very wide, but if you wanted to mount a GoPro somewhere as a secondary camera to get a unique angle like behind the backboard or use it for BTS I think that it could be useful.
Ok, I am at work just going through a lot of your videos. The HLG3 picture profile information just blew me away! I can't believe I have been getting by without knowing about proper color grading lol. Thank you for all of this information.
For sure! It’s HLG3 on 709 colour mode with detail turned down to -7 and I overexpose by 1 to 1.6 stops. Appreciate you checking out the videos and supporting the channel bro!
I shoot a lot of other sports like lacrosse, football, and skiing, do you think that theses luts will work well for those? Thank you, the vids are so helpful!
Man that’s a great question to which I have no answer lol. I know grading is usually done in the dark so I’d assume black since that way your walls won’t reflect light but I also work everyday in a room with white walls and I think my stuff looks good so do you I guess
Hey , I got your luts but it didn’t really go well with my hlg3 settings im not sure why. Do mind giving me your all of correct setting for you hlg 3 to use your luts.
Yeah sure. When shooting HLG3 I use 709 colour mode and turn detail all the way down to -7. Everything else is left at default. If you’re still having issues or aren’t happy shoot me an email at info@petersarellas.com and I’ll get you sorted.
Color grading from scratch is def more clutch when you know you’re shooting in different courts/gyms with wood paneling that’s variable in color but LUTs are clutch when you know you’re shooting consistently in the same locations.
For these LUTs, don't you need to have a certain setting in the camera to get the best effect? For example, when shooting s log 2, don't I need to copy your settings to make my clip look like yours, or can I use any s log 2 settings and get the same result? Same question goes for HLG 3 and Cine 4. Also, for someone who has never shot in a picture profile before, what is your best piece of advice for how to get started?
Yes Michael, it’s best to follow my settings if using my LUTS for best results, though you can pretty easily adapt with a couple tweaks here and there. I shoot in HLG3 with Rec709 color and everything else left as is (turn detail to lowest setting if you want). For just getting started, I’d recommend shooting in a few different flat profiles, colour grading them yourself, and seeing which you like best.
@@petersarellas thank you! I love the look that you got with the HLG3 lut that you showed. When I was testing it out, I got a lot of grainy footage (even using f2.8 and not incredibly high iso). How would you recommend fixing that?
@@michaelhasler6072 try overexposing your footage by 1 to 1.5 stops when you’re shooting and then bring the exposure back down when you’re colour correcting
@@petersarellas do you recommend hlg2 or 3? I’ve seen a lot of stuff about both of them and I do not know the difference. Also, when testing out hlg3, I was having a tough time producing what you did or even something similar. I’m trying to go for the look you had when you demonstrated the HLG picture profile. Can you send any tips? Like adjusting/setting white balance, what settings in HLG do you change, what shutter speed you use for fast moving subjects (I film sports as well), and just overall the things you worry about when filming inside a gym using a picture profile.
Shouldn’t matter as long as your adjustment layers frame rate is the same as your compositions frame rate. I usually edit my 120fps footage on a 23.976fps timeline.
Do you use AWB when shooting outdoor sports in HLG3? I saw somewhere where someone was recommending to 'never' use AWB when shooting in a HLG3 picture profile.
I never use AWB. I’d rather capture the actual feel of an environment (i.e. if one area has a warmer colour temp than another I want that to show rather than everything always ends perfectly white) so I’ll usually pick a colour temp and stick to it. In the case that I begin filming in the day and the sun sets I will slightly adjust my colour temp a bit cooler once it’s dark out.
@@petersarellas I understand. I was hoping to bypass having to pull out a grey card to white balance. It can become a hassle sometimes. Especially, since, with the a7iii, you can’t set it while being in memory call.
@@petersarellas I also shoot with a Sony a 7iii and I’m trying to do a mock Gatorade commercials or my college sports would shoot in 24 rather than 120 (which I’m shooting in now) give it that more professional look or should shooting in 120fps be ok. @@underratedfilmz8385 if you don’t need slow motion I wouldn’t shoot 120fps, and you can consider using an overcranked shutter if you like that high frame rate look. The reason I and most others use 120fps for sports events is because we don’t know when the moment that we have to slow down will happen, but if you’re filming something where you can control the action like a commercial then it’s best practice to shoot 24fps and only use higher frame rates for shots that you specifically plan to put in slow motion. If you need more information on this I talk about it in my video about the best frame rates for sports videography.

Question I shoot football so the sun is up in the beginning of the game and night time by the end. How would you grade it to keep it somewhat consistent?
I actually just dealt with this last weekend while filming soccer. For that you pretty much have no choice but to colour grade each shot individually since the lighting will be different with each. It takes longer but it gives you the best results.
Hey Peter, I found that with the new premiere pro update, my footage becomes extremely overexposed upon export? I also use sony a7iii and shoot hl3. Have you been experiencing similar issues? And if you have, have you found a fix for it? Thanks!
