@00 we're storytelling animals... it's innate, we're all born with this ability. stories are the way we first being to make sense of, and construct the world around us. ...kind of the stars we navigate by from a very early age.
@1:55 Wild Swans by Hans Christian Anderson... taught me that:
. transformation comes from the prickly, stinging things.
. no matter how close you get to burning, help may still come.
. a nettle is a symbol of that is possible, even when all hope is gone.
stories are the stuff the souls of made... they show us a different way of being in the world... a world that is very, very rich with enchantment.
explanatory stories are called myths... they deal with gods and heroes, creation of the universe, meaning and purpose of life... thye underpin the beliefs and morals of civilizations. they are kind of the guiding narratives with which we live by. all cultures, whether they recognize it or not, have these guiding narrative/mythologies,
@5:14 "the myth of more" - we need to produce and consume more stuff to be happier and healthier.
@6:15 "the myth of the hero" - not just being the best they can be, but better and more special than all others. vampires are the new superheros. speaks to underlying cultural narrative to be individualist and competitive and always want more of everything.
@7:16 the post-heroic story enmeshed us more deeply in the world, instead of above it, outside it, looking down on it from a place of privilege. not about individuality and competition. it's about building community and recognizing diversity. In a post-heroic story, you don't slay the dragon... make the dragon a part of your team with it's unique fire-breaking skills.
@11:00 if the guiding mythology of our culture is rich and nourishing, then it inspires us... it gives us meaning. but if our cultural mythology becomes arid and heartless, then we in turn become alienated and rootless. .... to fall out of myth is to fall out of meaning, because above all, myth is about meaning.
@11:45 change begins always with imagination... and i think it primarily begins with the mythic imagination.. with the ability to re-imagine stories that are better, stories that help us to see our place in the world differently... that entwine us, and mesh us back into the web of life on this planet, rather than standing above it.
@12:16 if the myth underpinning our culture is failing, then let's transform it. why not? humans have always been myth making creatures.
@12:30 if the cultural mythology is dying... if it's proving itself to e inadequate for the needs of the people and the planet, then the myth-making power resides in individuals... that the birth of a new personal myth in the imagination of one individual or a group of individuals, can literally spread and change the world..
...the "mythical misfits" kick start the transformation of culture... because they re-imagine stories which help us to fall in love with the world all over again... the stories which re-enchant us, which re-enchant our children, and which re-enchant the world, the stories which help us to re-imagine ourselves and our children, and the world.
@13:11 so when the great blazing bonfire of a civilization begins to flicker and die, a few individual flames usually remain. and when those flames get a little bit of air to them, and begin to lean in towards each other, then they can start a new fire. so, with the sparks of our own mythic imagination, let's kindle that fire.
