@Amari Hunter t-they’re engaged? They kiss on screen? I’m not trying to be rude so I’m sorry if I come across as such, but one of the reasons that Yuri! On Ice is so important to me personally is that it is very overtly queer, despite Japan’s views on gay relationships.
I would also like to point out something I noticed about yurio is that everyone always describes him as the "ice fairy" or "primadonna ballerina" or "ice kitten", it's all cutesy stuff and like really emphasizes how young (and adorable) he is, but when otabek describes him having "the eyes of a soilder" it's like the first time someone described him as something cool rather than something cute. And it even ties into your point that they're closer in age so that makes otabek a peer rather than like,...an older adult. I rewatched this show at least 4 times and only really realized this during my 3rd viewing lol
OKAY OKAY OKAY i was just thinking this the other day???? Yurio must feel like he's something for everyone else to mold, and like he has to hang on to his youth (he mentions the 'small window before his body changes' earlier in the series) for an impossible period of time before he can figure anything out, but he has always worked hard and had his own goals and was determined since day one, and Otabek is someone who's known that from the start. AaaaaAAAA
Also, don't know if anyone noticed, they get engaged in Spain where same sex marriage is legal. So, if they ever want to get married, I'd make sense to do it there. BRB, I'm sobbing.
I think I heard somewhere that there was supposed to be a episode where these scenes of them being drunk at the banquet would be added but I think because the write up was too long and they had to fit it in a specific time range they decided to add those scenes in the credits... the official team themselves said so... I kinda wish there was another episode too tho
"I think the best part is when we find out Viktor loved Yuri before Yuri loved Viktor" -Johnny Weir Its so trueee!!! Johnny Weir is a very famous skater and that's what he said at a interview.

Something else I’d also like to point out is how Victor’s pupils dilate when Yuri asks him to be his coach. Your pupils can expand up to 55% when looking at something you love. Your brain gets a boost of the “love hormones” which then cause your pupils to dilate.
You managed to put into words everything I felt when watching this ep for the first time. However, my head was just a series of screeches, shouts and unintelligible sounds, so thank you!
@@karolinaj.8656 So true. Half the people in the theater just leave marvel movies and COMPLETELY forget about the post credits scene. Me and my sister literally yell at them in our minds because it make us mad lmao😃
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. It's something I hadn't noticed myself until I was trying to write about Yurio for this analysis and was like "wait... he's just a sports anime high school boy in someone else's show."
@@LadyIneia Yeah, in the same way, the younger Japanese skater Minami is THAT Shounen Main Character. He is the protagonist of a different skating sports anime set in the same universe, he checks alot of the boxes for the genre. Ahem: 1) crazy colorful hair, 2) up-and-coming passionate youth who 3) idolises this older experienced skater (Yuuri), who seems aloof, talented, untouchable and the nations nr. 1 representative (Yuuri is the least reliable narrator, good lord). He even has a seemingly ambivalent 4) 'you can do it/fight on/i'll crush you (maybe?!)' moment with that awkward as hell slap on the back from Yuuri at the national competition where he 5) looses to his idol, but can 6) try again next year and has to fight the ticking clock of beating his idol before Yuuri retires.
Yep, i agree that i didnt see this in this light before but it totally makes sense, and it makes sense that hes angsty cause hes a teenager thing. Also i like how you pointed out that the protags were actually professionals and no longer high schoolers..
The director Sayo Yamamato also said "Yuri fell in love with Victor in the very beginning" and knowing it was mutual from the start just makes my weeb heart so happy
I dont think they did, do you have a source? a lot of people misconstrue the translations and draw their own conclusions from it even though that was never directly said.
Also another thing I saw on Tumblr is when Yuri was paying for the rings, if you zoom in to the register, if see that it's written wedding rings so.... Yes they are married 🤧
A little note from some research I did, cause I noticed that (for the western world i.e. Europe and stuff) the engagement rings are on the 'wrong' hand. Now this doesn't really matter cause you can actually put them wherever but I knew that anyone who didn't want them to be gay would use that against the show and I'd be sad. But then I did more research and discovered that their rings are actually on the correct hand for being engaged for many other countries, including Russia! And I feel like Yuri may not have quite realised that he proposed until after but I just know he did not regret it at all. So cute!!!
I actually considered including this in an early draft of this video script, little behind the scenes tidbit, but I decided to focus more on the Eros comparison! Isn't that so lovely? Victor really loves Yuri, and Yuri loves Victor right back.
Yeah! And also, in Japan, engagement rings are worn on the left hand, so Yuri probably knew that already, since he's Japanese! But he probably didn't know that, in Russia, engagement rings are worn on the right hand, until Victor said something! XD
yes, i'm glad someone brought this up! i'm a spaniard and the first thing i thought during the ring scene was how they placed their rings on the "wedding band' hand, as it's a spanish tradition to wear the engagement rings and wedding rings on different hands. i wondered if perhaps it aligned with their cultures, as well! so you just taught me something new, thank you!
Genuinely didn't even notice how this totally re-contextualized Viktor, omg. This is amazing. Thank you. I'm rewatching this whole show right now. Holy aclhfsjk.gblh
I can’t stop listening to the line where you say, “I had a great time with this boy at a party, and now I’m in love with him.” I just really love your delivery of it.
LadyIneia: He was trying to flirt with him the whole time. *_generally just being smart_* ... and that's why episode 10 is the best episode. Me: Hehe ring go SPORKLE
I know I'm two years late... But I am so happy I found this. I have been feeling this way for YEARS. I never understood how people could say this episode was just fan service because, like you, I saw how it shifted the entire scope of the series. It absolutely blew me away and it took me ages to figure out why... But you summed it up pretty perfectly. It's great to know that I'm not alone! People think Viktor is just coming off extremely strong (which is true I'll give you that) but episode 10 totally changes how I viewed their relationship and dynamic. God I love this show so much, even though it'll be 4 years old this year. See you next level!
And the pace is just... amazing. Never thought a couple of still images and barely a minute of animation could change the whole dynamic of a show. This episide is amazing
when it was airing ppl thought victor was secretly evil bc they didnt get why he became his coach/flirting so aggressively but then this ep came in and hit everyone in the face
victor be like YOURE THE ONE WHO ASKED ME TO BE UR COACH AND FLIRTED WITH ME NAKED!!!! WHY R U SO SURPRISED I TURNED UP TO BE UR COACH AND FLIRTED WHILE NAKED ???
I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but I think it’s in the 2nd episode you can tell how much Victor wanted to get close with Yuri. It’s the part where Victor asks Yuri if they can “sleep together” but Yuri rejects him saying “no”. Then it cuts to a scene where it shows Victor sleeping and you can see tears in Victor’s eyes. I thought it was sweet and sad because Victor probably thought that the person he is in love with didn’t want to be with him, but really Yuri was being shy 😭😭
can we just talk about the fact that victor is really forgetful but remembered what yuri told him at the banquet (being yuri’s coach if he wins the dance-off) which happened like forever ago? pls that’s so cute
This video’s content in a nutshell: At the party: Yuri: *hugs victor, shows affection in many ways* Victor: I have been seduced! After: Victor: ho ho pretty boy we meet again! Yuri: dafuc? 😂😂
*4 years later* me: *scoots in* may I join this fandom... although I'm 4 years late 👁👄👁.... I watched the whole show twice in 2 days and missed homework for it
I wish season 2 would show more on what victor is thinking when it comes to Yuuri and see more of there relationship( nothing yaoi) like them talking about it or some small kiss and romantic themes and them talking about it.
@@Anna953c nah nahhhh that'd ruin it :) yuri on ice is so perfect just cause of how beautiful victuuris relationship is (and the whole ice skating thing but you know that already), its healthy and adorable with none of that yaoi shit yknow, no offence btw 💖
I, personally, want more "family" moments in the second season when it comes in the future. Like for example, having a snowball fight in winter, where everyone is having fun, enjoying christmas all together and more... Or... a singing Yuuri! Orr... Victor playing the guitar or something. It would be so nice..
@@avantikapathania1363 no one knows, MAPPA said they're working on Ice adolescence (the movie) right now and that it takes so long because they want to make the animation perfectly, It was supposed to come out this year but they haven't even mentionet anything.... the only thing we have right now is the insta bio of the creator Mitsurou Kubo were it says that they are working on it, but the editing company MAPPA is completely salient... there are also things on the internet of a Victor in a green ice skating costume that we haven't seen yet but apparently it comes from someone that recorded illegally the production of the movie, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.... as for the second season, a time ago they said that they would only do a 2season if the movie gets really successful..... the movie has been postponed so many times, I hope that at the end they show us that piece of art, because they made history and I need my Victuri
It still keeps sinking in to me each time that they're engaged. I love how YOI depicted a same-sex couple with a healthy relationship changing each other's lives with character growth. Sad that they're only accepted in their world of YOI where where they are free to love and it isn't treated weirdly or shunned. I'll always be proud of Victuri being the first canon LGBT sports anime couple. Now give us that movie and S2!!!
I totally agree!!!! I also felt like yuri, "reserved but gorgeous yuri" thoroughly caught victor off guard and caught his heart in the process but putting himself out there on the dance floor, putting everything on the line and risking everything for the chance that victor would coach him hahaha
Yess! And I like that you mention that Victor is actually trying to reconciliate the Yuri form the party with the real Yuri, because he puts a lot of effort in getting to know Yuri even though he's taking aback at first. It's very obvious in the scene where Victor takes Yuri to the beach and asks him what kind of relationship he wants. Yuri says about their conversation that "he meets me where I am" bc Victor really listened and wanted to understand Yuri, his needs and motivations, and he then adapted his behaviour bc he really wanted to build a relationship. The emotional intelligence 😭😭
this show deadass made me cry when i finished it a couple days ago because it was all around definitely in the top 10 best shows i've ever watched, + im not that used to representation so to be honest, as an artist, as a (not figure however still) skater, and as a bisexual dude this show is all around a masterpiece- it surprises you how well it can develop characters and a relationship in only 12 episodes and 23 minutes each episode, with hidden moments, and obvious ones you'll come to understand later - overall, once again, this series is a complete masterpiece and i look forward to the movie (and, one of the small details i loved is that they drew figure skates correctly.). only thing im still confused about is what the hell is "see you in NEXT LEVEL" meant to mean? a S2? who knows at this point.
It’s so wonderful how much the show meant to you! As a skater yourself, I’m sure it had even more meaning, too. I’m SO excited for the movie as well. I wonder if the next level refers to the movie or another season or just the vague idea of these characters pursuing their futures even if there’s never any more of the show for us to see... somehow we’ll see them again as we chase our dreams. What a lovely comment, thank you for watching my video and sharing your impressions here!
(I am pretty sure this will go unnoticed all these years later but my nerdy self insists on commenting anyway 😋) All the skating was actually choreographed and performed by a real figure skater (Miyamoto Kenji) so they could base the animation on the actual body movements and they even used the sounds of his skates as the sound effects in the show. He skated at different rinks to make the sound effects accurate for the different venues because the environment of each rink (building dimensions, rink structure, condition of the ice etc) would affect the sound. The attention to detail in this anime really shows the love and dedication its creators have for it and elevates it to a whole new level, which is why it’s one of my all time favourites😊
I think the "eyes of a soldier" line speaks to Yurio also because everyone sees him as so cute, his nickname given by his fans is "the Russian fairy", Victor has him skate to Agape etc. So somebody seeing his strength and determination must really be awesome.
I just joined the fandom last night 😊 I loved your analysis and I also realized when Victor notices Yuri is staring at him in the very beginning of the 1st episode (after everyone was traveling home after completing the GPF) and Victor asks if Yuri wants a “commemorative photo”, we all thought initially that Victor was just a super talented skater who didn’t even recognize Yuri as equals in competition. But Victor was just asking if Yuri wanted a photo together to commemorate the special night where this boy swept him off his feet, and Yuri completely rejects him and walks away, leaving a shocked and hurt Victor 😢 This initial rejection probably adds reason to the fact that Victor never reached out to Yuri before Victor saw Yuri’s viral video.
Another thing I realized was when Chris places his hand on Yuri’s butt and asks Yuri why he didn’t invite him out the night before( This is episode 6, the audience’s first introduction of Chris at the China Cup. Phichit had posted a pic of a drunk shirtless Victor all over Yuri at the hot pot restaurant from the night before). We thought this was just a very flirty guy but Chris actually meant it because he remembered the sexy pole dancing that him and Yuri did together after the banquet and how much fun they had. Chris actually felt left out by not being invited again 😭 also it wasn’t that risqué that Chris placed his hand so intimately on Yuri’s butt after all the near naked pole dancing they already did together
Totally agree with both points! I think the commemorative photo scene reads SO different when you realize how close Victor and Yuri were at the banquet... poor Victor! And I agree on the Chris point too. He probably is pretty risqué in his day to day too, but he probably thought Yuri would be comfortable considering how close they got at the banquet!! Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. ☺️
@@LadyIneia Thank you both for this deeper dive into the timeline of when things happened. I wasn’t sure if the banquet took place before or after the offer to take a photo. That does definitely change how Victor would be in both situations. If the rejected photo offer was first?, Victor would probably be a bit more hesitant at least to start with at the banquet. I also think that Yuri’s abrupt turn away exit from the photo offer might have had a part to play in how Victor scolds Yuri for Yuri’s in-generous handling of Minami’s adoration. Victor want’s Yuri to be kind, more thoughtful and tactful with his response.
I have a question, though. Isn't Yuri's rejection right after the finale? So, the banquet would have been afterwards, right? I always thought that it would be nicer the other eay round, but logically I don't quite follow... they have the finale in Sochi, Victor wins, Yuri loses, they meet briefly in the entrance hall, Victor asks, whether Yuri wants a picture, Yuri leaves. Right? I'm confused 🤣
@@girlwithoutpearlearring I also think that photo thing is before the banquet. (Otherwise it's too sad for Victor I can't 🥺 ). What a great video this is though.. I'm So glad I found this fandom 🥹

I feel so dumb for not realising how the credits recontextualise their whole dynamic.. girl you have one big brain😭😭 but seriously I am so glad I found this video this made me fall in love with yuri on ice even more than I already was... time for a rewatch methinks
OMG this blows my mind. Thank you for making this. I've finished yuri on ice but I didn't get that the story of eros is actually about the party. Now I have different feeling for this show. ASDFGHJKL. Thank you so much for making this.
I recently watched the anime again after having abandoned the fandom two years ago. Upon my rewatch, I noticed many things that I hadn't before. All these little details and plot twists, very much like this one were so apparent to me. I must say that I love how Yuri Katsuki steadily stopped viewing Victor as an idol, but rather a human. I'm also glad that it was Victor that fell in love first. Overall, the stories of love are so beautiful.
Well said! I think Yuri learning to love Victor as a person and not as an idol is one of the central arcs of the show, and it's really beautiful to see.
Please do more analysis videos! I love these kinds of videos that just expand my view of my favorite anime’s and your voice is so fluent and confident. What you are doing is awesome and you should definitely do more.
It did seem pretty obvious from the start that Victor was flirting with Yuri - although I'm glad I watched the first couple of episodes on UA-cam, where commenters pointed out that where the subtitles say "do you have a girlfriend?" it should say "do you have a sweetheart?"...because the term is gender-neutral in Japanese. But yeah, this episode does explain why Victor is so sure Yuri has a sexy confident side and is confused about why it is so hard to get him to show that off. Also why he just showed up and was like: "Hi, I'm your coach now" (like you asked).
There really needs to be a better gender neutral term for “boyfriend/girlfriend” in English. I think it was the dub that used “lover”, but “lover” has a more casual context, and “sweetheart” is a bit old fashioned/isn’t really used much. “Significant other” is the only gender neutral English term I can think of that doesn’t have any additional connotations, but it’s awkward in everyday speech. “Do you have a significant other?” seems almost unnecessarily formal in English. So many other languages have better gender neutral terms that English is missing
Doesn't Yuuri come up with the story of the playboy coming to town to seduce the most beautiful woman though? It does make more sense if it was Viktor's idea with the metaphor and 10000% those were intentional parallels but I thought it was Yuuri who came up with it...
I actually just went back to check, Yuri said he could see a story in the program (so obviously it was the one Viktor choreographed the program envisioning) and then everything else falls perfect into place with your amazing cohesion of this. I am such a huge fan of Yuri on ice, but for some reason this comparison went over my head haha, thank you for bringing and even deeper appreciation to it.
That glasses analysis was really good, the feeling of when you go to the optometrist to remeasure your eyes and they tell you to test out a new prescription is a similar feeling, you can see clearly
omg... I always knew that night had a big impact because thats the reason viktor started coaching him but THIS OPENED MY EYES TO SO MUCH MORE ABOUT THIS SERIES!
YOU GUYS HAVE TO READ THIS IN THE SECOND EPISODE WHEN VICTOR IS SLEEPING IN YURIS FLOOR YOU CLEARLY SEE HIM CRYING (PROBABLE CRIED HIMSELF TO SLEEP) I think its because yuri was not showing any emotion back at him, victor was probably confused on why yuri was acting so surprised
I loved this video! It perfectly and succinctly describes why I think Yuri on Ice and, specifically, episode 10 is so unique and magical. It’s such a unlikely twist, something I’ve never seen in an anime or show before, and it’s amazing they were able to do it in only 12 episodes.
Can we also talk about how Victor loved Yuuri even when Yuuri wasn’t in fighting (skating) shape I read a fic that has a line that sums it up for me; to paraphrase, “there was something sweet about Yuuri not needing to know him completely to love him” And I think it worked both ways?? Idk. I’m crying again
Okay so people are saying this is a yaoi??? No, first of all Yuri on Ice is about ice skating, sure there is a touch of romance but it doesn’t make it a yaoi. Just because the romance is not your stereotypical straight romance doesn’t make it a yaoi, it’s just two people loving each other. Obviously this anime isn’t focused on the romance aspect, but instead it’s focused on the character developments with yuri, yurio and victor (and somewhat the background characters). If you simply don’t like how there are people who are part of the lgbtq+ community in Yuri on Ice, then maybe this show isn’t for you. The anime community surely doesn’t welcome any homophobia. If you are homophobic please keep your unwanted, conservative and stereotypes to yourself.
Chill everyone is entitled to their own opinions, just like you can call out people for being homophobos they are allowed to say their own piece, homophobos are allowed to watch anime and comment on it despite that. Still even with that not all people think in the same when it comes to gay people most are scared most want ot take anger out on them so yeah.
@@faith4657 I know that people might not have the same views as me and that’s okay but what i’m saying isn’t that homophobes can’t watch anime or comment on it, it was just that just because the main characters are most likely gay in yuri on ice doesn’t make yuri on ice a yaoi, it is an anime about ice skating and the progress of characters and there is that aspect of romance, but i think that based on what i just said that its not a yaoi, that’s all i was saying, you can disagree or agree but i think you didn’t get what i was saying and that’s okay
@@leonperera3359 I get what you saying just find it was just a little confusing, it may not be focused on the gay side I think but its hinted at those that just exclude it from being yaoi when its pretty hinted like a lot.
Wait omfg this story was beautiful before but now that I hear about the incredible red thread intertwined throughout the 12 episodes, my admiration for this show has skyrocketed. I was focused on surface info but omfg there's more depth in this show than a 4 season anime
my entire view just Changed and my mind is blown. holy crap, this makes me so happy. yuri on ice is one of my favourite shows ever and i’m extremely hyperfixated on it and can’t stop thinking about it, like ever. ive watched many videos and even written a 4.5 page handwritten essay out of boredom on why it’s so good. i never missed the drunk scene in the anime (its easily missed since its at the end of an ep) but this changed my entire perspective !!
my favourite episode has always been ep. 7 bc it perfectly showed yuri's development as a skater and the development of yuri and victor's relationship up to that point i feel like.... also the kiss scene and "i wanted to suprise you more than you suprised me" ofc sfhjf. but yeah your video really opened my eyes with regards to ep. 10 so now idk if i have a favourite anymore haha

I love how you perfectly described Yurio’s character as this teenage boy amongst the adults as a high school shonen protagonist put into the wrong anime. With Haikyuu or other high school shonen, characters like Yurio who’s always shouting and taunting doesn’t look out of place because the other characters also does the exact same thing. They’re all a bunch of teenage rage and emotions so it’s not weird to see them acting so animated and childish. But with Yurio, he’s the only one acting like that since all the other characters are adults really brings out his childishness, because the other characters just standing there and probably will only say « calm down kid, jesus. » I love this details honestly.
Yup, exactly! I love Yurio so much, he really feels like a kid. Having first watched the show as a teenager and having then rewatched it as a young adult, I definitely went from being like "take Yurio more seriously everyone!!" to "oh my gosh. this is a child. calm down kid." lol.
Pole scene. I all makes sense to me now! Haha! Yeh. I especially likes how the skaters hang out and eat together in a place generally foreign to their own. People like stories full of rivalry, but I think that camaraderie is very important to show too. You made me realize so many things, great vid! Subbed!

Ahem:
1) crazy colorful hair, 2) up-and-coming passionate youth who 3) idolises this older experienced skater (Yuuri), who seems aloof, talented, untouchable and the nations nr.

The director Sayo Yamamato also said "Yuri fell in love with Victor in the very beginning" and knowing it was mutual from the start just makes my weeb heart so happy
Oh man, that makes my heart so happy too!
🙌💍
Victor really loves Yuri, and Yuri loves Victor right back.
thank you i've been staring at their hands since ep 10 wondering when they would switch the ring to the left hand 🥲 they never did
Yeah! And also, in Japan, engagement rings are worn on the left hand, so Yuri probably knew that already, since he's Japanese! But he probably didn't know that, in Russia, engagement rings are worn on the right hand, until Victor said something! XD
I also did some research and it said that the lgbt wear their rings on the right hand. Idk if its true but based on google.
yes, i'm glad someone brought this up! i'm a spaniard and the first thing i thought during the ring scene was how they placed their rings on the "wedding band' hand, as it's a spanish tradition to wear the engagement rings and wedding rings on different hands. i wondered if perhaps it aligned with their cultures, as well! so you just taught me something new, thank you!
Genuinely didn't even notice how this totally re-contextualized Viktor, omg. This is amazing. Thank you. I'm rewatching this whole show right now. Holy aclhfsjk.gblh

I now urgently need to review this series😮😮😮

It still keeps sinking in to me each time that they're engaged. I love how YOI depicted a same-sex couple with a healthy relationship changing each other's lives with character growth. Sad that they're only accepted in their world of YOI where where they are free to love and it isn't treated weirdly or shunned. I'll always be proud of Victuri being the first canon LGBT sports anime couple. Now give us that movie and S2!!!

"golden opportunity for Yurri to show his love... FOR ME" AHAHAHAHA wow Victor's truly incredible
Watching the whole series as Victor’s one man mission to make Yuuri fall in love with him is the funniest way to watch it lol
Wow! I love your analysis of this wonderful episode! One of my favorites for sure.
Thank you so much!
this show deadass made me cry when i finished it a couple days ago because it was all around definitely in the top 10 best shows i've ever watched, + im not that used to representation so to be honest, as an artist, as a (not figure however still) skater, and as a bisexual dude this show is all around a masterpiece- it surprises you how well it can develop characters and a relationship in only 12 episodes and 23 minutes each episode, with hidden moments, and obvious ones you'll come to understand later - overall, once again, this series is a complete masterpiece and i look forward to the movie (and, one of the small details i loved is that they drew figure skates correctly.). only thing im still confused about is what the hell is "see you in NEXT LEVEL" meant to mean? a S2? who knows at this point.
(I am pretty sure this will go unnoticed all these years later but my nerdy self insists on commenting anyway 😋)
All the skating was actually choreographed and performed by a real figure skater (Miyamoto Kenji) so they could base the animation on the actual body movements and they even used the sounds of his skates as the sound effects in the show.

Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I've been quite busy, but I am hoping to do more videos soon!
Yup! I think the subtitles being gendered threw us all off early on. It’s good people were quick to point out the truth!!
I'm happy to have helped give you some new perspective on the show! Thank you for watching and checking back in the original episode too!!

I love you noticed that "more than talk" line because that was my favorite on screen note I made! Thanks for watching!!
I still remember when it aired and I lost it completely, because it was huge and changes everything we thought we knew about Victor and this show.

I have not watched this anime. Don't even have a clue about it's name and yet this summary was so good that it makes me want to watch it
