    Got some Lollar Imperials for a Partscaster build. They are truly phenomenal pickups. The clarity, definition and touch responsiveness is incredible, yet never harsh sounding. I would strongly advocate standard wind for bridge and low-wind for neck - they compliment each other beautifully. They are very height sensitive though, so take some time to play around adjusting the height and pole pieces, but once you dial them in they are absolute 🔥

    Well done comparison. I've listened to a LOT of comparison videos, and the Lollars are consistently clearer and defined, with more harmonic detail, than any other PAF humbucker style I've heard. The PRS pickups have a trait I've found in so many humbuckers, a pronounced low-mid hump that might sound great playing alone in your bedroom, but doesn't play well with others in a band/ mix situation. It makes the pickup sounder "louder", but it's all frequencies you'd end up EQing out in a mix. I'd take taming a slightly brighter pickup any day (that's what the controls on the guitar are for!) over trying to get clarity out of a muddy humbucker.

    Love the comparison you did an amazing job. There didn’t seem to be a huge difference but I think I’m leaning towards the 58/15 LTs as they seem to almost have a clearer, chimer, and more noticeable range that’s especially noticeable in the low end tones.

    In the clean and low gain overdrive sounds, especially not strummed, it‘s 58/15 all the way for me-they sound more glassy and transparent, more HiFi, while the Imperials have a bit of a mid range honk to them.
    From slightly higher gain sounds onwards, that same transparency starts ever so slightly muddying up the sound tho, while that honk helps the Imperials a bit more powerful and cohesive.
    I wouldn‘t be able to generally pick a favourite, I think, because it so totally depends on what you’re gonna use them for most.

    • @haskitt
      @haskitt  3 роки тому +2

      Good assessment - I agree 100% with the above, except that I really prefer the imperials clean... mostly because I have more room on my amps before breakup on them, and the balance thing between Neck and Bridge.

  • @IamMusicNerd

    Interesting. The 5815 seems to have a much wider frequency range, where the Lollar seem more focused in specific frequencies. Which makes the Lollar sound clearer but thinner to me, and the 5815 sound fuller and richer to me. It’s more apparent with clean tones. With gain the difference is minimal.

    Great demo. I had a bridge 58/15 in my PRS Studio which sounded great playing on my own but could be too thick and chunky (great I know), but affetced its presence in the mix for modern country playing with the band, maybe the Imperial Low Winds could be a good solution. The Imperials really speak to me when the backing tracking plays around 12-13 minutes in, they feel more "within the music" for me. Also considering Bare Knuckle Stormy Mondays. Problem solved, I bought at Musicman Stingray

    To me it's in the low strings. The E and the A. You notice it especially on the strumming clean. There's just a girth to the LT's that the Imperials don't have. It's what I loved about the 594 that I had the most. It just growled down there. I've yet to find something else that does it like that. Not that either sounded bad. I'm just more of a rhythm player and loved that thickness.

    I have the McCarty 594. You need to raise the screws a hair and then drop the neck pickup a hair and you’ll get rid of the ‘darkness’ a bit. That’s why I stuck with the 5815’s, you can mod to get to places the Lollars can’t get to.

    I don't know if its my ears, UA-cam audio compression while streaming or something else entirely - I've "blindfold" listened to 2 comparison videos of the 58/15LTs you've done (more than once), and in each one, the stock 594 pups sound cleaner, fuller with more chime and articulation. Im considering getting a 594 and window shopping for a potential set of pups to swap and experiment with. But, its hard to make these comparisons when I one can't be in the room. I got to play a few different 594s at a trunk show before covid hit, and was blown away with the tones. Id love to hear you do a comparison with the newly released Monty's Guitar "The Bethnal Green" pickups (Peter Green recreation).

    • @haskitt
      @haskitt  2 роки тому +1

      I’m a big advocate of saying they have to be played. Not that they sound different live, but the translation of what is being done dynamically is different between pickups, and we’re obviously more keyed into nuances while we’re playing. All that matters more to the player of course, which in turn, a more expressive player hopefully makes a difference to the audience! Cheers

    Thinking of putting Lollars in my PRS Custom 24 Fatback. The 85/15 pickups are just too hot for me especially in the bridge position. I am unsure which version of the Imperial though. I was thinking about high wind in bridge and maybe standard in the neck. Unsure if low wind in neck and high wind in bridge would be too much of a mismatch. Any thoughts? Were you using standards in both positions for this video? And, are you still happy with the Lollars? Mostly play classic rock and blues type stuff. Loving your comparison videos. Not many out there.

    • @haskitt
      @haskitt  2 роки тому

      Hey Kim, thanks! FWIW, I'm not familiar with the 85/15 pickups... as for the standard vs high/low wind, this video was all regular wind imperials, and although I don't have the PRS anymore I still have that Guild TBird with a High Wind imperial in the bridge. It's A2, which IMO in a bucker really balances out the higher wind coil to have a rounder, more musical attack. It's really versatile. If you like warmer tones that push an amp just a little harder I'd say the High wind bridge. The regular wind does seem to be on the brighter side vs the high wind, but it warms up nicely with tubes. The high wind, as lollar says, is still considered "vintage" output, so it's not like it's a metal monster or anything... just has a little bigger midrange push and rounder attack than the regular wind. I've tried the low wind neck from lollar, and it was nice, very articulate but I found it didn't have quite as much midrange character as I like (fewer winds often translates to less mid character in my experience)... the regular wind seems to me would be a great balance with the high wind bridge. Cheers, sounds like a fun project!

    • @haskitt
      @haskitt  Рік тому

      Hey Mike, I set all my pickups to my liking by ear. I like the Bridge relatively close, Neck usually kinda far from the strings. I usually set the Neck height first, so it has a balance of strength, Clarity and air, then I set the Bridge so it works well on its own compared to the Neck, and sounds good in the middle position.

  • @drothberg3
    @drothberg3 3 роки тому

    The coil splits in the PRS pickups have more volume and so seem to sound better. Is that because of the special PRS system for using a small percentage of the second coil for the PRS pickups? Did the Lollar split use the same split or is it a standard coil split. By the way, this is why I’d really be hesitant to replace the pickups in a PRS.

    • @haskitt
      @haskitt  3 роки тому

      Lollars used the same thing... this is still the stock wiring harness, which I actually like. I may swap out the caps for different specs, as I’d like the tone to rolloff a bit more, but yeah, has the resistor on the coil split. I suspect maybe the PRS coils are maybe more mismatched on purpose so it has one stronger coil that you hear when split?

I don't have the PRS anymore, but I still have the TBird I mentioned in the video with the High Wind in the bridge. It's A2, which rounds out the higher wind coil really nicely. As lollar says, it's still considered "vintage" output, so it's not like its a metal monster or anything. I love it for classic rock/blues, has plenty of brightness for me and doesn't sound congested like some high wind pickups. the regular wind bridge is just a little leaner and brighter, but not shrill. I've only tried the low wind in the neck, and although it was nice and had plenty of articulation, the lower wind on the coil took away the midrange character that I love in the standard wind neck. You can use one for rhythm tones to instantly sit a little bit back in the mix and another one to stick out of the mix a little. There are endless variations and both sounds very usuable for me. I will say, for a more high output PAF, the PRS has an impressive tonal balance. Still going to

    That said, if I had a 594, I would probably keep the PRS as I just think they were well designed for that guitar.

      This 594 neck (and the core as well as singlecut model) is their pattern vintage - a pretty chunky asymmetrical profile, they specify 0.89” depth at the nut, and i believe close to 1” at the 12th, but they don’t specify that. The 594 thinline model is a slimmer profile.

      I think you’re mistaking brightness for all those things. It’s brighter, thinner, more hollow sounding and not as full and sweet and creamy as the PRS. So that thinness and brightness probably makes you think it has more presence, clarity, definition. For me, it’s nasal, thin, hollow, and bright. PRS for me is the tasteful and delicate one. It’s rich, full sounding, with plenty of clarity, while keeping the highs sweet and not piercing. Low end and body is also balanced and present. Very balanced, beautifully voiced, tasteful, delicate than the Lollar that sounds like a typical nasal hollow with thin sound beneath the bigness of a humbucker and just with a lower output. Lollars are nice pickups but they can’t even hold a candle to the PRS 58/15LT to me.

    58/15LT. The imperial doesn’t even hold a candle. It’s brighter, thinner, more nasal, but not better. It’s got that annoying usual nasal, thin, piercing top end, and hollow sound of humbuckers that I don’t like. 58/15LT is sweet, creamy, rich, full sounding, with a lot of clarity and refined sound. 58/15LT was the first humbucker that I really loved and this just proves how amazing and on a different level it is. I primarily use 51 nocaster with Alnico 3 pickups for single coils, antiquity p90 with Alnico 2, and then firebird pickups are my favorite kind of pickups. They sound like telecasters on steroids and destroys even my favorite humbucker pickups. For mini humbuckers, I like the one in Gibson ES-390. But for humbucker pickups, my favorite is the PRS 58/15LT. Another one that also blows everything away and beautiful sounding that I love as the 58/18LT is the Ibanez Super 58 that’s on the AM2000H guitar w/ Alnico 3. And then I also quiet like the Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbuckers w/ Alnico 2. Everything else even PAF marketed pickups like this Imperial is just shit sounding to me despite hoping they’d be great. But that’s just my personal preference. Nice comparison video btw. Thanks for making this.
