Boerboel Breed Standard #7: The Tail of the Dog

- As a break from all the information on the Breed Standard descriptors for the head of the Boerboel, I skipped right to the tail of the dog... and the viewers will be surprised at how important this little appendix is in the evaluation of other critical traits of the dog.
I also address the stacking of Boerboels during appraisals and the absolute fallacy of forcing their tails into an unnatural position (which does nothing to show conformation with this very neglected but key aspects of the Breed Standard). Stacking is something which gets done at shows where all the dogs are judged for their beauty and ring performance alone and has no place at appraisals where conformation, mobility, balance, general health, temperament and appearance are evaluated. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Johan, I am sure many people don't appreciate your honesty, BUT I DO! I just love the way you explain every aspect and then the pure enthusiasm and passion you put into it. I understand 100% how much these 'new aged appraisers' 'krap jou gat'. And the way you stacked poor fluffy, had me in knots laughing! But this is exactly what you see on the breeders channels, stacking the dogs and lifting the tails, chocking the poor dog with the chain to get the stance perfect... It looks like our human counterpart runway models, starved, looking like skeletons, but thats the new norm of beautiful :( We have recently purchased two puppies and are eagerly awaiting the 12 month mark, so we can have our turn at an 'appraiser'... Lets see how they do. Wish I could have someone like you to do a REAL appraisal, and not one judged by the bloodline or friends-line. Keep up the good work Johan, there are people like us who actually WANT to learn, so we can better the breed! Warm wishes from Cape Town xx
Dankie Tessa..... ja, Mosambiek is n bietjie ver om te ry om te kom honde keur!
Mine is called fluffy!!! laughed so hard at hen he took his fluffy!...am learning Alot here...thank you from Botswana 🇧🇼
I truly appreciate that you keep close to the original standards since they were bred for tough work in a harsh environment. It worked then and still holds true. Function first, then the rest. Keeping true to function creates the most beauty. Fluid movement, no exaggerations, intelligence, all the good qualities that came into play when these awesome dogs did their jobs
Still I the process to see all your videos and let me tell you sr. I'm learning so much from your videos!!!
Still hoping to get my dog soon, but it's taking time because here in Portugal, there're just a few "trusted" breathers and prices are very high.
Anyway, keep the good work and congratulations for such an amazing content. 👏
Mr. Swart, I am new to the Boerboel world and have already fallen deeply in love with breed. So much so I would love to start breeding them. I have purchased a female pup with breeding rights for this purpose and have a male coming in mid June. Both dogs are registered. I live in Canada and as of yet have not been able to locate anyone that does appraisals. I'm reaching out to you in hopes that you may know someone or may know of a way to get an appraisal without the dog and appraiser meeting in person. I am striving, of course, to breed quality dogs and as your well aware I can only succeed at that with quality stock. Watching your videos I believe I have done a good job picking my female but as I stated I'm new to the breed. Any help or wisdom you maybe willing to share would be appreciated and well received. Thank You sir for what your doing with the videos and educating us I for one am extremely appreciative and thankful.
Thank you for your commitment to the breed and for the honesty
Thank you for continuing to post great video's
Just subbed to u.. im in the market of getting a boerboel i have 3 acres of land with live stock.. i was interested in the kangal but i think the boerbel fits me.. thank you.
Would be way easier to understand if you show different pictures with the different cases that you described. 😉
Thank you once again Johan for the great lessons. And please if you can , share the breed standard you are using,
I will upload it on my Facebook page but it is pretty close to the Breed Standards of the Boerboel Club of East Africa, the American Kennel Club, BI, BABS, EBBASA, KUSA and others. It is nothing new.... it was simply a consensus document between all the Boerboel Associations which properly described all the traits of the breed
Thank you for your knowledge of the breed .what was your favorite dog that stuck out for you many thanks from Australia
It is difficult to name a favourite dog.... some were my favourites because of their loyalty, some because of their mother's instinct, some because of their guarding abilities and some just because I liked them!!!
@@boerboelacademy thank you I was watching a video and I think it was you in the video of bosman bosvlei boerboel there was a 2 part video I think is was filmed in 2012 .there was a dog in the end I think you show cased it
Can you do a video on what to look for to choose a pup please?
Hi Meghan, That is a science on its own which is mostly based on luck and research of the forefathers of the pup.... and even then it is mostly guesswork
Sir , does your book contain puppy growth chart as well? Like what should be the ideal height and weight of the pups to check on monthly / weekly basis . I’m really confused as I see pups weighing about 35-40 kgs at 5 months. My breeder says that the ideal weight should be about a KG/ every week till the pup is 6 months old. It’s very confusing...need your advise on what to feed and how much to feed also sir.
My book is about the origins and history of the breed and does not address puppies at all. I think your breeder is correct.... please dont ever overfeed your puppy as you will be damaging it for life. The guys who brag about how big their puppies are, have no idea what tjeybare doing. Just ignore them and keep.your dog slim...... you will reap the benefiys later.
"Mr. Kinky tail Fluffy" Hilarious!!
Gibts das Buch schon auf deutsch?
Hi Alexander, unfortunately the book is only available in English
@@boerboelacademy okay das ist leider nicht so gut
Please! Next video🙏🏽 I'm waiting. I'm checking every day. Please. Jy is die beste
Thanks for a great video. Discussing the tail you did not say anything about “tail docking” it still seems to be highly supported in the Boerboel breeder community in South Africa. As I respect your insight I would like to know what your feelings about tail docking is. Is it really necessary or is it (in my eyes) just for the show. I did see your video about how you do the tail docking but it also did not explain why it is done.
Hi Deon, I made that video years ago but I still follow the practice. Let me be honest, in today's society we would probably heed the opinion of somebody who never even owned a Boerboel in the consideration of the "feelings" of the dog. My personal experience with both undocked and docked dogs is that the docked dogs cause less trouble for their owners. I saw, during a lifetime of breeding 2 "tail breaks" which were incredibly traumatic to me and the dogs. I also had dogs of which I had to have their tails amputated due to constant injury to their tails ("happy tail") and I (and household items left on side tables) felt the power in a Boerboel's tail firsthand. I do not mind if a Boerboel.has a docked or a long tail as long as it doesnt cause the dog pain or hardship during its lifetime .... and as I remove the rear dewclaws on my puppies because it bothers them later in life and is never of any real benefit, I still dock my dog's tails within 3 days of their birth.
@@boerboelacademy Seems like a very sensible thing to do then. Thanks for taking time to explain and reply.
Tail should have girth haha sure that’s the tail haha
