Assuming there is a retarder, will it work while in cruise control, as another resource for the system to maintain the safest speed on long and plunging slopes? That would minimise the driver's intervention like you said just leaving the cruise control on, I believe. Also, on queueing up suddenly, will the smart cruise control handle the amount of breaking, as well as turning hazards on? That would be cool.
My 2 day old Renault has this annoying habit of when you set CC to 56mph and the truck decides no your driving at 50mph. So instead of saving fuel I am accelerating all the time so I can actually reach my destination with driver hours. Instead of looking at paperwork try visiting how the trucks are really used. We have depots to get too in time.
