Isn’t this interview an (albeit small) act of defending the human experience? Maybe what you said was intended to be a joke, but I think that there are many precious things that must be protected by other precious things. Oftentimes that protective instinct is called “empathy”, which I’ve been told is good to have.
@@bennyjones1502 Without resorting to an abstraction about "precious things", the human experience is quite a robust phenomenon, not a waif. What we're really being asked to defend here is the ability of a minority of adult humans to make their desired living from writing about the human experience. This is in the context of the internet and highly efficient, low cost channels capable of distributing and democratizing media. Also, note that for much of the history of the internet many individuals were happy to share their content merely to express themselves and weren't using it as a stepping stone to make a 6 figure salary. Donald Kaufman, one of the great auteurs of our time.

Very informative and interesting, I don't know Charlie's work but I am going to seek it out. Thank you.
Start at adaptation
Start with Being John Malkovich! Don't skip any movie, all of Kaufman's work has something great 👏

Kudos to a bs channel like Variety to give voice to a true artist.
