    Great content man! I have watched all of your videos on walking on, as I am preparing to try to walk on at Mizzou. I am about 5’10, 230 lbs, and I am considering trying to play linebacker. Do you think my height will keep me from making the team? Also, What kind of 40 times, shuttle times, and bench press reps do you think would be adequate for me to have a shot? Thanks!

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 років тому +1

      Thanks man! That's awesome though, wishing you luck!! that's a good weight generally speaking for LB. Height you can't control so don't even stress on it. You may have to try and make up for the height with some speed or effort though, but it definitely won't "stop" you from making it, just don't make it a big deal, only control what you can control. All schools are different and it depends if they need players at the time or not so I can't say what times will give you the best shot, but I do know you gotta go do your best. Even if your times aren't quite there yet, always be trying. Good times for you though would be in the 4.7-4.8 shuttle range, bench 225 maybe 20+ reps, and shuttle in the 4.3-4.5 range are goals you should have. I don't know you though so not sure if it's realistic or not, but I know LB's at OSU were crushing some crazy numbers and coaches like fast LB's. (what matters is making the team, not these numbers though - they will improve once you make it, so just focus on these drills for NOW and go make the team)

      Sounds good! I’m stuck around 14 reps at 225 for now, but I’m planning on improving that for the rest of the summer. Thanks!

    GREAT Information, Really. I am subscribed now and will be sending all your videos to my stepson who plans to do a walk on . He is recovering from an ACL injury. Any advice on that ?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 роки тому

      Appreciate it, Patrick! My advice on that would be to focus on the physical therapy and follow the advice of his doctors and PT's. My friend in my videos Nick Seme would know more about the recovery for that since he's in PT school. But as far as mentality, just getting healthy and getting back to full speed is important. While he's recovering he can use this time as a way to improve other areas of his game like watch film, train other body parts he can work out on, learning about the game, or read books & focus on personal development in areas of his life....all of it helps, just keep moving the needle.

    Would you say that walk on can take to a year before playing on the field just a little bit ?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 років тому +2

      That depends on a bunch of different things, how good the player is, what school, competition, etc. Can't just make a broad statement like that because there's definitely cases where some could play. In general though I would say it's going to take much more than a year at a top level school (OSU, Bama, Clemson) to ever even have a shot and there's no guarantee even then you would ever play. You have to be good enough and things have to line up right and ultimately coaches decide and it's totally out of your control. In my experience at a top level school - I would say in most cases it would take between 3-5 years to have a chance at any significant playing time beyond if it's a blowout.

    Hey I’m planning to transfer to a different college heading into junior year, do most college teams have a summer tryout so that I could get on the team junior year or is the only tryout in the winter meaning if I make it I’d only be on the team senior year?

    • @clayraterman

    Can you go to walk on tryouts as a Junior in college? Also could you walk on if you never played football in high school?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 років тому +1

      Yes you definitely can - my walk on class had plenty in it that were that old. Try as early as the next tryout though to get experience even if you don't make it! And yeah - it helps if you've played before but if you impress them enough you can make it.

    • @clayraterman

      I'm honestly not 100% sure. My guess would've been around 100 or less and I had a fairly big walk on class with like 6 or 7 of us (non-preferred walk ons). Only 3 of us actually made it through to the end of our time playing there.

    Going to attempt to walk on at Oklahoma university as a linebacker as a sophomore. Took a year off because I didn’t think I wanted to play but I changed my mind. I’ve gotten a lot bigger benching 345 and weigh 195 at the moment. I was a great defensive player through high school making all district and almost all stating even though I never started a snap of football my senior year just because I got moved around to different positions and my team was political not skill based. I wanted to know what my chances really are I’m training hard right now and on a meal plan working out 7 days a week and what are other things I could do to prepare and should know

    Could you make a video on being a PWO? I got invited to join the team (Memphis) this summer, I feel I have a pretty good shot of making the team. I was decent in HS, just out of position. I'm 6'1 215 and I plan on going for OLB/DE.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 років тому +1

      Choppa you mean preferred walk on?? What would you like to hear? It’s essentially the exact same thing except you don’t have to tryout you’re just already on the team and you gotta continue to do well and prove yourself as you go! Most preferred walkons with an invite just means you’re on and good to go unless they just decide to cut you later on if you’re not doing the right things. But I’ve never seen that, usually if they invite you they see potential in you and you’re just treated the same as any normal walk on or participant on the team (just no scholarship)

    • @Jcashmoney79

      Will I be able to eat w team and stuff like that? and all walkons start on the scout team correct ?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 років тому +1

      Choppa I think you’re thinking of like old school walk ons from back in the day. Nowadays at least at D1 level everyone was treated well and like they were a part of the team like anyone else. & Yes all walkons ate for free (new rule as of 2013 or something). That is true that you’ll definitely start out running some scout team but that’s like what everyone does when you’re new or not as good. If you prove yourself and are good you can work your way up from there. Different schools have different cultures though so I can only speak from my own experience. Hope that helps! They offered you a preferred slot for a reason though!

    Do you get to choose what position you play for a team when you walk on or is it selected for you?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  3 роки тому +1

      you start off by selecting and then they will move you if needed based on what they need and where they want you at the time. Could end up ALL over in some cases lol (so short answer - hard to say)
