Mk2 Golf has been the daddy of hot hatches since 1984. Love these cars, had 5 of them over the years.
Ricky I'd check the rear suspension turret behind the petrol flap the way the flap isn't aligned suggests rot behind the fuel filler pipe which in turn holds the petrol flap slightly ajar,speaking from experience m8,not being a hater,I've had 5 of these cars and 3 out of 5 had this issue

I don’t know what it was about the mk2, but the handling and overall feeling to the steering in general was abysmal in my honest opinion. Still a lovely car apart from that mk1 steering wheel.
