For me it's Edge Chop, the painting technique that takes hours and it never quite feels finished
Edge Chop? What is that? I refuse to edge highlight anything, so the name immediately turns me away.
But isn't that the best part 🧐
Some saying that includes "sweet summer child" comes to be mind.
Lol
Can't lie I love the edging process with my models
The saftey portion of the video just sold me. I havnt seen any enamal brands advertised like that.
That's awesome. I knew people had concerns, but these are as safe as you can get for enamels.
Same here
That got me sold enough to get past the nightmare that is Canadian shipping
So happy to hear that PK Pro will be distributing the inks. Then I might wait a bit, before I order. Last time customs sent my paints back (other company) because the paint was mildly flammable.
By the way I’m about to embark on a Beastmen project and was thinking of combining Slap and Goon Chop.
Nice!! Yeah, EU customs is pretty rigid. But Villainy Ink will make it through.
I still remember the first video i saw from you when i was just getting into the hobby. The slightly kitbashed grimdark swarmlord and the glue/blood method.
Shame the video seems to be gone now. Back then the thought of oil paints sounded intimidating. While i think it was good that i first learned how to use acrylic contrasts and washes because of that intimidation factor.
I absolutely cannot deny that oil washes have been a true game changer for bringing that realistic feel to my models.
After this video i will definetily be taking a closer look at these villanous inks of yours.
That's awesome to hear. Thanks so much. I'll continue to add new and updated videos to UA-cam that will replace the older stuff.
wow something new to try for me. thank you for the time and research into your paints and acnt wait to use them. knowing they can be used by my daughter with less risk and me being there is a big plus.
No worries. Just like with any paint, make sure to use a respirator if you are spraying them and dont eat them of course.
I appreciate the update on the Villiany Inks! Looking forward to getting my set!
Thank you!!
Great news about the shipping, can't wait to try out goon slap with my new inks
Awesome!! I'm excited too.
This is pretty much how I use to paint most of my stuff, I used grey primer instead, never thought about using white, but it makes sense.
Cool!!
Zack you are the best ! Thank you for all the tutorials! And waiting grimly for my order 😂
I'm glad you like them! Ty ty.
omg I've been hoping for something like this for a long long time. ordered a couple to test them out.
Awesome!! ❤❤
thank you for the clarification. I was going to fast not waiting for it to dry.
Pretty much how I paint all of my minis for tabletop, nice to have a name to put to the technique. Can't wait for my villainy ink order to arrive.
Awesome! I typically just call it the reductive technique.
Awesome video, definitely looking forward to the Ink line coming to Element Games in the UK, ill be picking up the whole line.
Nice! Thank you!
Man, can’t wait to get my filthy hands on your inks! ❤
Awesome! Ty ty!
This looks great, just ordered some goon's grime! Will be watching more tutorials and probably joining the website as well. Very cool.
Beautiful work.
Thank you! Cheers!
That was a solid video! I'd love to see you take that world eater and push it even further into a tutorial in that specific style.
I’m fairly new to painting miniatures, but would this technique also work on a zenithal primed (black and white) mini?
What's the difference between oil washes reductive technic and enamel washes reductive technic? Is one better than the other?
Definitely going to try this. Just need to get my hands on some enamel wash.
I work as a miniature sculptor so I don't do much painting due to time constraints, but I love to watch painting channels nonetheless. Everything is beautifully crafted here. The love and passion that you've poured into this paint range is very inspiring. Love your painting style too. Even your video editing is Grimdark. 🤟 Best of luck with the range.
I appreciate that!! Would love to see your sculpts.
Thank you for sharing. Do we apply a "Gloss Varnish" before the Enamel Wash?
You can. Not necessarily needed, though.
How would you go about doing this style/technique with the main color black? Like black armor and not doing any highlights before the wash.
I particularly like Decay effects for black armor, like a grey/green wash. It contrasts well with black and gives it a nice grim effect. If you didn't want that effect, then a lighter brown looks good as well. I'll be releasing a video soon that shows Decay of Death, which is a grey/green enamel wash/effect.
@@GrimdarkCompendium cool! Looking forward to it
I have found in my experimenting with the reductive technique and contrast paints I am better off with a matt varnish layer in between, maybe i was too aggressive with the q-tips but the first few orks I painted in reductive were losing some paint and we down to the white primer. lessons learned.
Yeah, Contrast paints are pretty weak so a varnish could help with that.
I've found that as well
You guys are a inspiration, real work of art 🤟🤟😎
Appreciate that.
Thanks for the tutorial, I'll definitely that, I've bought some oil paints and barely used once. The only thing is: I like more saturated ad vivid color, is this technique viable or It darkned too much? Or there is a way to make it work even for vivider results? Thanks
In the little clip I play of the more controlled wash, you can see it isn't as dark. That is a more carefully added and mottled wash application. It doesn't tone down the miniature as much because it is more focused on the crevices. Looks a lot better, too. Just takes a little know-how.
very similar to the old Army Painter dip technique, but with clearly higher quality product. Looking forward to trying these out.
Absolutely! Enamels will always win out in the wash catergory.
The very first thing I did when contrasts came out was “slap chop” a Skaven warband for Underworlds, but I just called it sketch painting. Can’t wait to try your inks.
Awesome ty
hi, do I understand correctly that no varnish is applied after the acrylic base colors to seal them before you start with the Ink Enamel?
Correct. No Varnish is needed.
@@GrimdarkCompendium thank! i preorder your inks by pk-pro ⚔️
Can't find mineral spirits in my country. Turpentine or just plain alcohol works on oils?
Try white spirits.
I remember coming across your vids a year back. Enamels and oils and just the cherry on top. It adds a realistic finish to models that helps tie in mistakes and messy blends.
To me, it’s another tool within a mini painters arsenal. To ignore it, is just a mistake. Thanks for all the content!
Oh, thank you! Yeah, enamels and oils are pretty forgiving .
Have you got an australian distributor for villainy ink or just through your website?
Grimdark Gaming.
Any idea what varnish one should use after using enamels? Would I need to varnish the acrylic base before using enamels?
No varnishes are needed before enamels unless you just want to be safe. If so, any varnish is fine. Varnishes as a last step is not something I recommend.
@@GrimdarkCompendium thanks for the reply, do you think enamels washes will hold up well on heavily used minis? I play a lot of games with my orkz.
Rapaz... o que se usa normalmente como solvente? césio137?
great video dude!
Appreciate it!
Great video. So as a UK buyer, do we have to wait for PK Pro to put them up on their website as I cant find anything there?
Element Games will be your distributor.
@@GrimdarkCompendium that's awesome to hear. I regularly buy paints from them.
Awesome ! How diluted should the enamels be when applying them though ? Straight out of the bottle ? Diluted a bit with spirits ?
For a fast unifying wash, straight out of the bottle.
really happy to hear about the solvent
Awesome. Thanks!
Nice! Timely video since I'm working on 30 berzerkers right now. Thanks again can't wait to try some goon slap! Take care!
Good luck!
How soon can we expect villainy inks to be sold as a set? And will it be a little bit of discount compared to buying them all individually?
As soon as I can figure out a packaging.
Looks cool 🖌
Ty ty
Really appreciate your dedication to the hobbie in all you do. Looking forward to trying Villainy Ink in my own works.
Thanks 😊. I appreciate you.
all my oil wash turn out either to darken down the prime color too much or thinned down to much so i take of all of it with the 2nd step
You can always use a lighter oil wash and a more controlled application for better result.
Amazing that your channel doesn't have more views and subscribers yet. Fantastic stuff!
Eh, I've just now started being consistent on UA-cam. Takes time and effort to appease the algorithm.
@@GrimdarkCompendium Yeah but time and consistency will surely pay off in your favor, I have no doubt! ;) Personally I really enjoy the way you approach painting/the style in which you paint and it sure upped my painting as well!
@daemonishere thank you so much.
What mask do u use for enamel?
N95 respirator for all brands. A good vented paper mask for Villainy Ink.
Am I right to assume Goon's Grime is close to Streaking Grime? I might need to try this technique out again, my previous attempts looked too "muddy" for my taste lol
It is a kin to the 2014-2016 Streakimg grime. The focus was to get the correct color and finish of a grime.
@@GrimdarkCompendium Nice! not a fan of the latest AK streaking grime with the swampy green tint.
What always struck me as odd about the slapchop method is that all the drybrushing seems like the same effect could be achieved with a good zenithal priming. Which further speeds things up. Could probably even airbrush the first pass onto of enamels.
… and I couldn’t agree more, oils and enamels (along with your channel) really has completely changed my approach to mini painting! Can’t wait to try out your inks!
I appreciate you. 🙏 To me, the dry brush steps are too much work for little result.
A zenithal prime can definitely do mostly the same thing as the drybrush pass, but not everybody has an airbrush. The general slapchop method is written like that to be accessible to everyone, but it definitely isn't a be-all end-all of speedpainting. Like with all painting methods, there's a lot of room for individual customisation.
Drybrushing also has the upside that it preserves dark areas in upwards-facing crevices, giving an ambient occlusion effect that would disappear if you used a zenithal highlight. And the drybrush step doesn't take more than 5 minutes for smaller models and maybe 10 for bigger ones.
Drybrushing gives you a lot stronger contrast on all the little details and textures than zenithal does. It's not necessarily better, but it is different and can achieve different results.
Yeah, that's actually what I thought slap-chop was! I have always done a base colour, then zenithal before a final light dry brush. This is all with spray cans and the dry brushing doesn't take long at all.
I have always hated base coating as I struggle to get my head around watering down paints and don't have the patience for multiple thin layers, so this has been great for me and a massive time saver. I'll often include an oil wash step as well.
Already got my first project planned for my Villainy Inks 😁
Awesome!!!
What's the difference between oils and enamels?
Enamels dry much faster and have a matte finish. Oils take much longer to dry and typically dry satin or glossy.
So I'm a bit confused, what is the best option for a european customer to buy your product ? What online shop ? Yours ?
PK-PRO when they have them available. Felix will be announcing the launch soon.
@@GrimdarkCompendium Alright then, looking forward to place my order in their shop !
@@herr-jaeger great!!
That's almost the same technique I use on my 30K Word Bearers, except that since I don't airbrush anything I still edge highlight few things a bit after the enamel pass (I also paint OSL and skin only after said pass, to obtain an easier focal point).
Good stuff! Pretty easy, eh?
did you try to make a product like dirty down rust that uses i dont know what, but is washable with water ? Might be a solution for the enamel "hate"
Lol. Yeah, Dirty Down is water washable, but that shit will kill you. Amazing product, though.
hahah okay@@GrimdarkCompendium
This looks great. Possibly a light paddle sand dry brush at the end to pick out the highest point? Probably not with metal edges on this particular example however.
Oh, there are many little things you could do to improve it. This is a bare-bones demonstration
A question, will a black wash also work well if you wanted a less grimey look? Also how would you do a black version of this and so maintain some definition?
Stupid question. I always assumed that the mineral spirits was the toxic part of the reductive technique. Am I wrong?
Yes, but there are brands out there that are much safer. I am working on bottling my own too.
@@GrimdarkCompendiumthank you!
Fortunately for you, I'm in the market for a grimy oil wash. I need to get a bottle or two.
Hell yeah!! I'm your man! Just finished mixing another 10 gallon drum of it Goon's Grime.
I hope you guys do a kitbash/painting tutorial for flesh eater courts in the future
Might do a full course.
Sorry for a dumb question but do you varnish before the enamel? This looks so good and totally sold me on the line of inks!
You can, but you don't really need to.
@@GrimdarkCompendium awesome,thanks!
Do you have a UK retailer for Villainy Ink? Interested to try them out
Element Games!
@@GrimdarkCompendium great to hear!
Omg the news about PK Pro is awesome! Cant wait they get them 🥳.
Ty ty!!
If you’re already using an airbrush anyway you can do your undershading doing a zenithal with grey and white on your mini, much faster than all that drybrushing.
True. But I don't think a zenithal will pick up as much detail as the dry brush, which could be either better or worse, depending on what you want.
Literally do that kinda way with my death guard. I use a color scheme similar to the red corsairs and i only do some slight edge highlights here and there and then just do a wash with streaking grime. Easy and kinda fun way to build an army. Espically one with that many details. Also i started doing a similar thing on my night lords now, with cutting some in between steps.
Nice!!
Whatever happened to the Rogue Terminator painting challenge? I haven't seen any mentions about it anywhere and if there is info could you please direct me to them I wanna see how it turned out :)
Sadly, I just became way too busy to run those. I wish I could have a challenge every month. I need a community manager to help me with stuff like that!
@@GrimdarkCompendium Thanks for the reply and information. It is disappointing to hear but completely understandable. Were I experienced with that sort of thing (currently 0%) and a lot more competent (20% competence) I'd ask how I'd become one hahaha

@@kingtone3734 will do.
So the conclusion is that Goon-chop is just the traditional GW beginner painter method, but with agrax earthshade swapped out for an enamel wash?
Anyway, what is the benefit of doing enamel washes compared to oils? I have been using oils for a while now for pretty much this exact painting method (but with some more highlights applied with acrylic paint later, and maybe some creative removal methods of the oil wash if I want extra grunge) For me oils work very well since I can use the method I want, I can blend the oils, make thin or thick wash or "mud", or go quite thin for pinwashing. I don't see what enamels bring to the table if I already have oils that work well.
Delvan Mud, not Agrax. But yeah, keeping it simple with base colors and then doing the unifying wash. Enamels work the exact same as oils but have a more grungy finish and dry matte. They are made to replicate effects, like grime, decay, and rust. Enamels definitely have a different aesthetic than oils. With that said, I use oils all the time, and Villainy Ink will move into making oils after I finish the enamel line.
Can we get villainy inks in the UK?
Indeed.
Girmdark painting changed my life ❤
Is there or will there be an Australian distributor? Shipping costs are off the charts!
Grimdark Gaming.
Keep em coming bubba
Will do!
What's the cost of the inks? That's my main question right now.
11.99
Id like to see a reductive technique with a non Grimdark scheme. Is this even possible to do ?
Yeah. Just do a more controlled wash. Sticking mostly in the crevices. Clean it up and finish with a varnish.
Can you do something with the price of shipping? Paying 80 € for delivery in EU is crazy
"As you can see" - bro, you're showing us how you paint a model in such darkness that we can't see shit, lol.
Can't wait to get my order! Neither can my Witch hunters
Looking forward to getting the orders rolling out. 😀
Awesome that Villainy Inks are less toxic than other enamels. That's pretty damn sweet.
That's awesome. I appreciate it.
By the way, you can always start the video off by promising news about your ink line at the end of the video, then talk about the news at the end of the video as a way to increase viewer retention and also focus on the focus of the video for those who are just coming into your channel and don’t know about your inks. I hate to give unsolicited advice but that’s the only way UA-cam communication works.
"I win" is the sort of thing that puts me off watching and paying for content
What do you mean? There is nothing to win, I'm just saying that enamels are better. It's just a little joke anyway.
@@GrimdarkCompendium title card of the video...
Your right, there isn't... So why phrase it that way?
@@gomezaddams8554 ummm. I guess my humor is a little dry or dead pan for some to get. The whole Goon Slap thing is a joke. It's the same technique I've been showing for years.
@@GrimdarkCompendium thing is, you've got a whole paid for website and now products, so it doesn't really come across as humour - dry or otherwise. It comes across as pushing your products which... Okay I guess? If that's it that's it, but.. eh. It puts me off - you do you
Can't please everyone. 😅
The contrast paint step of slapchop has to be done with a brush, and should be done over some type of value sketch. That could be a drybrush, or that could be done with an airbrush, or with rattlecans. I point this out because contrast paints are supposed to provide shading and base coating in one application. I would like to add, i myself do a zenithal highlight with my airbrush but i go directly from black or dark grey to white. You have to go easy with the white thought to get the proper gradation from black to white
Indeed. In this video, I'm showing them used with a brush and an airbrush just to illustrate that it doesn't really matter how you apply them if you're using an enamel wash.
Who came up with the name Goon chop, a Slaaneshi cultist 💀
I'm gooning right now!
Hahaha 😆 😂.
So you DO know what it is! Boys he's one of us.
Why did you remove basically all your videos that have been up for years ?
I will be redoing all of those concepts with new videos.
May I ask, do you varnish before adding the enamels or oil washes? I rarely do, and feel as if i'm committing Heresy, haha. Nice results. I've done oils over contrast base before too, and the only issue was going too hard with the cotton bud on the contrast parts meaning some came away, but not too bad, it could probably be used to effect I guess depending on colours.
This is great, I have a load of contrast paints so will have to get busy, many thanks.
Thank you. You can add varnish if you like, but it shouldn't be necessary.
Well I can tell you there are at least 2 bottles going to Oklahoma when it’s able to ship here
Nice!!! Thank you!
Yall gotta add more light to the minis when your painting them, its soooooo dark its impossible to see whats happening.
Copy.
The low toxicity enamels approach won me!
Awesome! Thank you.
Put it under white light so we can see the mini properly and really judge the result.
I'm not a slapchop fan. Most of the miniatures I've seen painted with the slapchop technique have prominent white dots that make the miniatures look like they were taken out of the freezer. This looks much better.
Thank you. I would need to try it more, but the dry brushing bit seemed hard to get bright enough.
I think I like this better, just get a few new enamel washes, instead of a bunch of contrast paints.
Yes! It's pretty simple all around.
This is almost exactly what I do for the units in my grim dark armies. Not spending hours on a model that gets shot off the table 10 mins into the game
Cool! It's easy, right? I mean, painting trim sucks but everything else, including the wash, is trivial.
@@GrimdarkCompendium pretty much and the effect is fantastic. Plus its a great base level to go full grim dark if you choose to. Plus the two examples you used flesh eaters and world eaters are two of the armies I play
