Howdy Folks! Hope you guys enjoy this one! Due to the shipping of Villainy Ink Enamels I will be absolutely covered up in work for the next little bit so this may be the last video I personally post for a little while. Don't worry though Dark Ages Workshop will be the man to bring you the Grimdark goodness until I return! I appreciate you all! Catch ya in the next!
I have done some research on dirty down paint owing to a MSDS file I was able to find on the internet for what was a large tote of their paint that I’m thinking goes into their rattle can but it also seems to line up with their listen ingredients on their small bottles. It’s a concoction of various alcohols with virtually no water in it. It’s mostly ethanol, acetone, xylene and tons of various length polymeric alcohols and of course pigment. It creates this insanely volatile paint that dries fast and allows the pigment to dry separately from the eachother creating separation of hues, shadow, and tint.
One thing with the Dirty Down Rust that yours probably beat is its stability. It reactivates with moisture, and it also does so if you try varnish over it, so you can't protect it... I love how it looks, I don't love how it holds up.
Congrats man on getting the hookup with Element Games. Been a fan of the channel for a long time and subbed to The compendium. This is a great step for fans of this style and pushing the art form. Keep it up!
@@GrimdarkCompendium Hi and thanks for your reply! I've asked because in whole web I don't see any "grimdark" miniatures set on clear / transparent bases. Btw. Did you have any photo (example) of your miniatures with clear bases? I'm really interest to see how it looks like. Thanks in advance!
I saw an ad on instagram for your range and ordered them there. Been starting to get into enamels over the past year, and I’m excited to try colors outside just streaking grime and dark brown. When they arrive I’ve got a terrain set that will be great grimdark practice.
Be patient? BE PATEINT? Okay. Patience activated. 😂 Good luck with the packing, mate. Sounds like you've got a nightmare ahead. Good luck, and I look forward to receiving mine from Element Games.

@@GrimdarkCompendium thanks to you as well, from what I’ve seen these are pretty much the perfect enamel products for me, something I’ve been hoping for for a good time. Looking forward to the release!
@@GrimdarkCompendium that is a nice plus (might be helpful for trying to convince some friends to give them a try), but it’s more the specific tones/colours you’ve chosen, had very poor luck mixing up my own and sadly have run out of the older formula streaking grime I used to use.
@user-qg4st8ih1d ahhh. Yeah, the Grime is on point for sure. If everything goes smoothly, I will be extending the range of colors with 7-10 more colors.
Agreed story is everything when it comes to making really cohesive models even if they arent grimdark. Great tips my friend, cant wait to purchase the villainy inks 🤘
@Primogen1988 I would want to do a crazy kitbash. Make him a little bigger and better pose. I'll probably spend a while looking for the best bits to use.
@uro13 I should let you know that all new orders will have a shipping delay due to how many last-minute pre-order there were. If you are moving very soon, let me know, and I'll see what I can do.
Is the extremely dark lighting deliberate? It hides too much of the painting and makes it difficult to appreciate the work properly. While it may be intended for photography of the completed product, segments showing the painting process should be filmed in brighter light.
@@GrimdarkCompendium I have not purposefully or been requested (via commissions) to, however due to painting anything, my historical side sees a lot of realistic weathering etc so it's not too far removed. I am following your socials and website and I'm looking to gain 'Grim Dark' knowledge into my options.
Thanks for another informative video. I agree about DD Rust, yet it's biggest downside is that it's very difficult to varnish because it's water soluble, but that can also be used to effect. If anyone has any tips on how to varnish it though please do tell. There's several products out there that are great for grimdark painting yet refuse to be varnished or reactivate with water, like DD Rust being one or Windsor and Newton drawing inks, haha Cheers
Thanks for the tip, any Lacquer you could recommend? Just realised Laquer has shellac as does the W&N drawing inks so maybe thats the answer for them, haha. Thanks @@GrimdarkCompendium

Question: clear acrylic bases are acceptable for grimdark miniatures or they are some kind heresy!?

Yes we do, but you can also get them from PK-PRO
These inks seem shiny how do you get a Matt finish?
Thin with 3 parts mineral spirits. But, the feedback has been noted, and batch #2 has less base, which should fix that issue.
