The Killer Instinct SNES Console Bundle Mystery

  • Like most Nintendo consoles, the Super Nintendo had its fair share of bundles and variations over the years. However, where the SNES differs is that several of its special bundles were just hastily thrown together with stickers and standard boxes.
    There are exceptions to this rule, such as the nice Donkey Kong Country set we've looked at previously, but in most cases Super Nintendo consoles unfortunately leave a lot to be desired. On top of that, the question and mystery of how exactly these bare-bones bundles were assembled is tough to determine. Let me know what you think about all of this down in the comments!
    Check out this thread on Video Game Sage for lots more information regarding SNES console bundles:

    I bought this exact bundle in 1997. From what I remember, the KI game cartridge came inside the box (it was not a separate item), and the bundle came with an RF switch, not A/V cables.
    I still have the original box with the inside plastic packaging/twist ties for each piece of the SNES in their respective compartments. In the top right corner compartment there is a plastic bag that fits perfectly around the KI game cartridge. I don’t have a dust cover on the cartridge, which makes me think the game cartridge didn’t come with it and just came in the plastic bag, placed in the top compartment at an angle just like you showed. Below it was the RF switch on the left in the narrow/vertical slot and the power adapter next to in the square-ish compartment. The controller went in the bottom compartment just like you showed.

    The box I got as a kid was the one with the Killer Instinct game and 2 controllers. It also had the soundtrack CD. I love seeing SNES boxes. It was not the only system I played, but the only one I owned back then. Seeing console and game boxes always stirs up memories for me.

      Console bundles are always cool! All of the sticker nonsense with the SNES bundles makes things particularly weird though. I've never come across an N64 bundle that was so lazily put together, so I'm not sure why they cut so many corners for the SNES. And that would have been an awesome bundle to get back in the day! I'm happy you enjoyed what I showed here. Thank you so much for watching! :)

    That’s the one I got from Christmas in 96 or 97 , it came from Zellers. I kept it in the same condition since then. The game from what I remember was stuffed in the slot next to where the adapter was. It didn’t have a dust cover. The top part was for the av cables. It came with a poster and cd that was just in a paper sleeve. I still have all those components over my many moves since then.

      Thank you for watching and commenting! That's awesome that you got it new back in the day! Man, I miss Zellers. For me, the cartridge does fit in that slot to the right of the console. However, similar to where I placed it elsewhere in the tray, it sticks up and doesn't go down far enough to slide inside the box.
      Another commenter mentioned that the styrofoam trays that come in these bonus bundles may have been modified to accommodate for the inclusion of a cartridge. If that's true, I suppose I still need to search one of those out!
      Congrats on keeping it all together after all these years, and thanks again for watching! :)

    That one is called a “bonus” bundle. Bonus bundles have the sticker and sometimes extra cuts in the foam for the bonus item (typically a game or controller). There is also a “bonus” version of the Combo Set that includes extras, like a Killer Instinct ball cap and Killer Instinct Player’s Guide. That one was a Walmart exclusive. Fun Fact: My friend bought the Walmart Combo Set and an X-Band videogame modem back in the day to play Killer Instinct with me, but the modem said his copy of the game was incompatible. He exchanged it TWICE and all three said the same thing until Walmart finally swapped it for a retail boxed version of the game. That is how we discovered Killer Instinct v1.1. No, Killer Instinct never included the dust sleeve. Nintendo stopped including them in 1994. I recall thinking it was weird that my launch Super Game Boy did not have one and then I actually called Nintendo when my launch copy of Donkey Kong Country didn’t have one. The Nintendo rep told me that they determined that SNES games didn’t need them because they were largely self-cleaning but I could buy one for $2 if I still wanted one. Sure enough, every new game I got after DKC was missing the dust sleeve. Another fun fact: I discovered DKC v1.1 by trying to demonstrated a glitch to my friends when they got their copy Christmas 1994. The glitch only worked on my copy, meaning it was updated after the November 1994 launch and some time before Christmas. It’s not like my friend’s parents bought it Christmas Day so I assume v1.1 was already in production at launch.

      I do wonder if Bonus Bundles had Killer Instinct v1.1. It seems they never sold out of the first manufacturing run since Nintendo Power implied the CD soundtrack was only for the first run and every retail boxed copy has it. Heck, even the v1.1 Combo Set had it… at least in the Walmart version. Did this set include the Killer Cuts music CD? Does the sticker say anything about that?

    • @TheGameDisplay
      @TheGameDisplay  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching and commenting! The SNES Bonus Bundles are just so bizarre, so I appreciate all of the clarifications. The sticker on the box does mention that it comes with the Killer Cuts CD, and I actually had it with me but ended up not showing it during the video.
      I have an individually boxed copy of the game as well and that also mentions that it comes with the pack-in CD. I've never seen a copy that didn't come with it. And I figured that Nintendo stopped packing dust protectors with the games! I really noticed it with Game Boy games since I used the cases all of the time as I often took my games out of the house with me, but I never thought about it too much for SNES games since I didn't tend to use those covers anyway.
      There being different versions of some SNES games is interesting. It's almost a shame when they take out non-game breaking glitches, as those kinds of things were fun to find, exploit, and show off back in the day! It's cool you were able to play Killer Instinct over the X-Band with your friend, even if it was an ordeal getting it to work.
      Thank you for the information and for sharing your stories! :)

      @@TheGameDisplay Yeah. Game Boy games definitely stopped including them at some point. I was annoyed since some of my organizers and carrying cases had slots that only fit them with the dust covers. The specific glitch in DKC that revealed the revision for me was the one where you go into a bonus round riding an animal that isn’t Rambi, collect another animal, then dismount before you leave. The game will remember that you entered with an animal buddy but won’t remember which one, defaulting to Rambi since the bonus round is not supposed to rob you of your ride. It was a way to turn Winky or Expresso into Rambi in a few different levels where you were never supposed to have him!
      Not many people know this, but the SNES Killer Instinct retail game box was slightly bigger than a standard SNES box and will not fit some box protectors. No doubt, this was to fit the CD and sleeve. The Arcade Card Pro is somewhat similar for PC Engine. Not only is it slightly thicker than other HuCards with the cover (Populous, Street Fighter II’, Super System Card, Tennokoe Bank), the jewel case is slightly thicker too and won’t fit many jewel case protectors.

    I think there is a reason why there is no specific place for the cart in the foam tray. The box looks like it was originally intended for the bundle with a console with no cart. But the sticker suggests the box was repurposed. They added the cart to a box that wasn't designed to hold it.

    The plastic protector only came with SNES games from 1991-93. Mario All-Stars was the first game not to come with one, and all games after that point did not come with one. Only the cartridges with the original shell had them.

    • @TheGameDisplay
      @TheGameDisplay  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for that information! It's funny how cartridge protectors were phased out for the GB and SNES as time went on. Then when they got to the N64 there were no protectors at all. Makes you wonder what one might have looked like! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)

    • @TRJ2241987
      @TRJ2241987 Рік тому +1

      @TheGameDisplay it seems to me the Game Boy didn't phase out the protector until a little later on. Maybe because they were a bit more practical as they protect the entire cartridge. I didn't get my first Game Boy until Summer of 1995, my first games were Donkey Kong, Link's Awakening (1995 Players Choice) and Super Mario Land (Revision 5 with a 1995 copyright on the back of the box) and all three of those definitely came with the protector when I got them. I've never been able to track down exactly when they stopped including the GB protector but I think it was 96-99 era. Regardless, at this point I keep a 1/1 ratio of Game Boy games/protectors, and I only put SNES protectors on the original design carts. I also like to collect the official clamshell protectors that were sold in the Nintendo Power catalog and keep my best games in those. The NES ones are fairly common, the Super NES & N64 are a bit more scarce, and the Game Boy ones are almost impossible to find.

    Do you know if these small box SNES Control Sets ever came with a piece of cardboard that goes on top of the styrofoam tray? All of the larger boxes seem to have them, but I don't think I've seen them with any of the small boxes or the SNES Jr.

    • @TheGameDisplay
      @TheGameDisplay  Рік тому

      That's a great question! I don't believe I have ever seen a short box with a cardboard piece on top. It seems they were saved for the longer boxes, likely because the longer box needed more support to not get crushed in if something was set on top. I'd love to hear if you find out otherwise! Thank you for watching. :)

    I just picked up the same box and styrofoam tray as an f zero bundle. It says “f zero inside” like it’s supposed to go in the foam tray somewhere but just like you I cannot figure a place that it fits. It’s too tall just like you said in the slot that seems obvious. I actually put the controller in that slot and put the cart where you have the controller. The cart is laid back in order to fit. I have reached out to the contributors of the vgs thread (I’ve been with the forum since NA) and heard nothing back so far. DOES ANYONE KNOW?! Lol.

    Maybe it was underneath the console ...idk that, like you said weird . I think these were close to the end of the lifecycle releases where you could literally get the console and pretty much any popular title with it just to get them sold . But i notice the console sits an inch below the lip of the box and it wouldn't be in danger of falling out a box and the packaging was just thin plastic bags . Nintendos early packaging was cheap garbage ...when was the last time you saw the original case an individual nes or snes game in ? The packaging was made to be disposable . That being the case, there's no telling how they packed it because it wasn't supposed to be reused .

      Thank you for clarifying! One of the problems with just slapping a sticker on a generic box is that usually the back of the box provides detailed information regarding what exactly you're getting inside, while the sticker system ends up leaving things a little bit to your imagination. I'll have to fix that.
