Christmas 1988. My brother and I got the NES Action Set. We also got a type-written letter from Santa Claus saying he "ran out" of Super Mario Bros 2 games, so he got us Top Gun instead. Strangely enough, Santa's letter was clearly typed on our Mom's electronic typewriter, although I'm sure that was just a coincidence.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your story! That sure was nice of your Mom to help Satna write his letter. I'm sure he's very busy! I remember hearing about how SMB2 was a super elusive item that Christmas season. It's awesome that you grew up with the Action Set though, I'm sure you had tons of fun just like I did! Take care! :)
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but you're missing at least three sets that I'm aware of. The "pre-deluxe" set released in the NY test market that did not display the "Deluxe" lettering on the box, the "Official Player's Guide" bundled set, and the "Basic" set that came out at the very end of the NES lifespan alongside the top loader.
Adding here there’s a challenge set with raccoon Mario flying on the box without the yellow box. Not sure if by Basic you’re referring to the red top control deck, but that is also missing. If we’re going for obscure variants, I can count at least 11 missing here.
My parents bought my brother, sister and I the NES Power Set for Christmas in 1989. We had the orange Zapper and the cartridge that has the NES Seal of Quality on it and Mario is wearing white overalls. It's still today my favorite console.
@@TheGameDisplay Our box here in the US was twice the size bigger. The only issue was our parents hated when we played World Class Track Meet haha. I could never get tired of the NES though that's for sure.
Nice too see come of the old school NES I played back then in your set keep the classic alive Robbie from Trinidad 80's game on now your play with power
In the USA, (in 1987), we had a NES CONTROL DECK Official Player's Guide bundle, which came packed with the guide book, instead of any games. The family photo on the back shows one of the kids reading the guide. It was stacked on top of the NES control deck when you opened the Styrofoam. I owned one of them back in the day, but I ended up trading it for an Action Set.
Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your stories! It really is wonderful having memories like that. I need to get my hands on the version that comes with the Player's Guide!
I was lucky to have gotten a NY test NES set in 1985. The Deluxe Set was released nationwide in 1986, it came out just before the Action Set, even before Super Mario Bros. was released. SMB was released in February 1986, at least in NY. I used to call the game stores (KayBee, Toys R Us, FAO, etc) every week, and was on many lists for them to call. When it had come in I was called by about a half dozen store managers. :) Also, the original NES black box line-up games were only $22 each at launch. Some stores even marked them down to $18.99 each. I am still very fond of those games.
Hey Andrew... Just want to say... I appreciate your videos and the effort you put into them! I enjoy watching them. Your channel content is entertaining, informative and very sincere to your passion for video game history. I never feel like you're trying to sensationalize anything for views or likes. That combination is so rare on UA-cam currently. All my support for you, Brother! (Opened the NES/SUPER MARIO/DUCK HUNT Bundle box on Christmas Day the year it came out... My family had an Atari system before that, but that day opening the NES set changed my life forever! Home video gaming, from that moment onward, was for me a solidified part of my life!)
That is really, really kind of you to say! Thank you so much. I hope that you continue to enjoy the content! :) And that's an awesome story! The NES truly is magical like that. Thank you for sharing. :D
Hello! Well, i can finally put a face to the voice. I have not watched any of your videos yet where it shows you in it. I really like this video. Brings back so many memories. Super nintendo with the games donkey kong 2 and 3 were my very first video games system ever. I got them when I was 8. I was so excited. I played that thing all the time. I dont know what happened to it tho, because I had to get another one when I got older. But man have you got a collection! So cool!

Nice showing the history of NES bundles. I think I got the challenge set back in the day and the top loader. I remember I got the top loader because my NES would be a real pain to get working.
Thanks for watching! The Top Loader definitely helped with the unreliability problems the front loader had. It's just a shame that it lacks in other areas. Take care! :)
The Sports Set you have is the USA release. In Canada there was a separate different Sport Set that came with Golf and RC Pro Am as the games and 2 controllers / no satellite.
So that is where that cartridge variant comes from! I always wondered why they changed that at some point. Thank you so much for watching and for sharing that. :)
Awesome video great collection!!!!! there’s also a late release control deck, that has the red stripe on top just like that third action set that you showed
Thank you so much! I've now learned about a few obscure NES bundles that I didn't know about before uploading this video. It's amazing that I've been collecting for so many years and yet still haven't seen them all! Thank you for teaching me about that one. Take care! :)
Thank you very much! I love the NES, and have had so much fun collecting for it. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the different bundles that are out there! :)
For some reason when I was younger I never thought to save my console boxes, but I surprised myself a few years ago when I was going through some stuff and found all of my NES and SNES paperwork still in the bags in perfect condition. I didn't even remember saving it, but I'm glad I did. I also seemed to have this weird habit of pulling the extras other than the game manuals out of the boxes and getting rid of them, so a lot of my old boxed games aren't truly complete. I have no idea why I did that.
I also saved pretty much all of my manuals from back in the day, even if I didn't keep the box or additional flyers. Who knew that the boxes would become so collectable! Thank you for watching. :)
I recently bought the challenge set, I also have the 1989 action set, I have noticed that the bottom of the console has different labels and I was curious to know why. I loved your video, thank you very much for showing us your Nes and I hope you do the same with the other subsequent consoles. Greetings from Colombia.
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have one NES that's different on the bottom than any of the others. It has a red service sticker that really stands out. I've read that apparently it means that console went through a Nintendo repair center at some point! I hope that helps. :)
@@TheGameDisplay The red sticker consoles seem to have come with the NES Challenge Set bundles. When I was looking for a boxed Challenge Set on ebay a few years ago, nearly every one of them came with the red sticker console.
I grew up with the Action Set. And now that I'm an adult who can decide how to spend my own money, I have gotten a Challege Set sans box and a Top Loader sans everything but the cables to hook it up. I haven't had any real video issues with it, but RF only is a pain. It does play my Challege Set SMB3 very well! Somewhere there has to be a list of the pack in games. I'm not sure, but I think I've seen mention of some other titles having been included at some point.
There are 3 Canada-exclusive bundles that you're missing: NES Basic Set (later "red stripe" box, includes only 1 controller), a sticker-variant of that NES Basic Set (which includes 2 controllers), and a NES Action Set in a different smaller box (with gray Zapper). The US also had a "red stripe" version of the NES Control Deck (console with 2 controllers). There are also minor variants of the "red stripe" Action Set. Some have red text on the back of the box, some have white text. I also saw a variant of the Sports Set that had different logos on the front.
I remember getting my SNES as a kid, and I expected to get Mario World in the box. I was upset in the car when I found out the game wasn't there. It turned out the box I got was the one with only 1 controller and no game. This was the first console I bought, so I didn't expect to see the game pictured on the box. I ended up getting Gradius 3 as my first game. I don't remember why I didn't buy Mario.
That's awful! In the beginning pretty much every SNES console came with SMW, so I totally understand why you would have that impression. Finding an individual boxed copy of Super Mario World is actually incredibly rare these days because its individual release was very limited. Just about every SMW cart out there originally came bundled with a console. Thanks for sharing your story though! I hope you were still able to enjoy your SNES, and had fun with Gradius III. :)
You are missing 2,the nes control deck with the tips book and the nes original release of the deluxe set which didn’t say deluxe and it was the first ever released nes in North America
It's amazing, I really hadn't heard about those before making this video, and hadn't heard about a Deluxe Set without a name either. It seems I still have some searching to do! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)
@@TheGameDisplay another reason you may not have heard of the original deluxe set release is because it was only made for a year and only available to New York area and it was the testing to see how well the system sold in America
Awesome video! The NES is my favourite console. Does the Challenge Set include SMB3 with PRG0 or REV A? It would be cool to see if they may have had an over abundance of the original cart. Also, I’ve never seen a boxed model 1 Sega CD before! That one behind you was cool to see. (An Easter Egg in this video, perhaps? Lol) There are so many revisions of the Sega CD bios! I left a “Like”. Good job. Edit: Also for the Power Set variant, the cartridge on the left had the Nintendo seal of quality and the one on the right side didn’t.
Thank you for watching! The NES really is awesome! It appears the Challenge Set comes with the REV-A version. And ya! The Model 1 Sega CD is definitely pretty obscure, so you very rarely see a boxed one! I bought the one and only one I've ever seen. I'm glad that you even find the background of my videos interesting. :) That's weird about there not being a Seal of Quality on one of the carts. It's almost like one of the labels is an early version before it was fixed up and finalized. :P Take care!
Hi there! I noticed that you are missing the following sets Test market NES nes control deck with official players guide Power set with gray zapper Nes control deck that came out between later action set and top loader
Thank you so much for checking out the video and for that info! At the time I believed that I had them all, but since then I've definitely realized that wasn't the case. I have actually added three more bundles to my collection which I hope to share with everyone someday!
The Deluxe Set was the original, as until mid-1986 when the basic Control Deck set came out (a version with the Super Mario Bros. cartridge included retailed for $10 more than the one without it), it had no name. This included two controllers, the R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) for Gyromite, and the Zapper Light Gun for Duck Hunt. It was replaced in early 1988 with the Action Set, which deleted the R.O.B. and the separate Duck Hunt and Gyromite cartridges, and replaced it with a two-in-one Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge. Later in 1988, the NES Power Set appeared, which had the same contents as the Action Set but also added the Power Pad and replaced the included two-in-one Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge with the three-in-one Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet cartridge. In 1990, the NES Action Set was supplanted and eventually replaced by the NES Challenge Set, which was similar to the basic Control Deck Set but also included the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartridge. Also new that year was the NES Sports Set, which included four Control Pads, the NES Satellite wireless hub, and the two-in-one cartridge Super Spike V'Ball/Nintendo World Cup.
Thank you so much. I hope you do more cib consoles. I've been trying to find something like this for reference too see what kind of goodies or paperwork that should be inside when I buy a cib console.
You're very welcome! NES is pretty much the only console where I own every single box variation, but I could definitely make a video about other consoles as long as people aren't worried about there being a few bundles missing! Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
Here's this fun fact: back in October of 1985 Nintendo released the NES Deluxe Set as a test on New York, Chicago and LA to see if it's popular or not. The set had the same content as the Deluxe Set but the box is completely different. (For one thing, we didn't see the word "Deluxe Set".)
Great video! Was the Challenge Set SMB3 cartridge the only release of the red bar cartridge? I didn't know there was this sticker on the box and red bar.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words! A few other cartridges also got the red bar treatment in the NES's later years such as Tetris. It was a way to easily distinguish if a cart was for the NES or SNES after that released. I suppose some people were confused at the time.
@TheGameDisplay It took a lot of searching, but what I believe I found out was that the red bar was only released as Can version vs USA. I don't know about the rest of the World. Going to try to buy one someday, but cheapest I found was like $400 vs $80 for a USA non red banner. Both in box little damage. Add that to Bros. left, right, and my Famicom version.
I believe that was an extremely early version of the box just sold during Nintendo's NES test run in New York? If so, I have heard about it once before, but I'd love to see it someday! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)
Good job on the videos as always my friend I think my Mother got the bundle with Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt but when I was born we got Super Mario Bros. 3 because that game came out the day I was born funny thing though they say I was born with an NES controller in my hand I guess that was my little brothers polite way of saying I am a Nintendo Nerd heh after all I do loves me some Nintendo well anyways I hope you have an awesome day take care my friend
Hi, Jake! Thank you for watching! It's awesome that you grew up with the Action Set, just like me! And it sounds like your brother thinks pretty highly of your gaming abilities. Keep up the great work, and take care! :)
The NES power set with the Power Pad is what I got in 1989. I believe the action set eventually went to $99.99 & the power set was $149.99 US. I am surprised that Nintendo never made a console bundle with Super Mario Bros 2. I guess because Super Mario Bros 3 is so good & was so popular. The version of Super Mario Bros 3 that came with the challenge set was version 2 that had an improved translation. However Nintendo used the original translation Version 1 for Super Mario Bros 3 in Super Mario All Stars.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! The box for the SMB3 that comes with the Challenge Set also has a big sticker on it that says CHELLENGE SET, and the cartridge has a red stripe at the top of the label. It's really strange that Nintendo bothered to do all of that for a game that was already so widely available out there. But it's really cool nonetheless! :)
I am surprised that there was so many NES box bundles that were sold back then and I never knew that there was a cartridges that had three games in one, I wonder how often that happened with NES cartridges. Thanks for showing me the AV Famicon and is that system compatible with all international games cause I really like to know.
I think it's awesome that there were so many options when it came to buying an NES! They're all so different and unique too that it makes them a lot of fun to collect. As for the AV Famicom, if you get a NES to Famicom converter you can play pretty much any NES game on it! Check out this video I made about it a couple of years ago: ua-cam.com/video/oPfcfGtU0gE/v-deo.html Thank you for watching! :)
There was a Control Deck "set" with a copy of the Official Nintendo Player's Guide (in the US anyway, dunno about Canada). This would have been after the version with a boxed copy of SMB and before the version with nothing but the system and controllers. This was not a thing like that oddball sports set you showed that a store put together, it was the actual, official release for a while. Also, orange zappers were not because Nintendo got sued. It was because laws were enacted in the US requiring toy guns (even relatively unrealistic ones like the zapper) only be sold in bright colors.
Wow, now that is something I have never, ever seen before! It's probably one of the most obscure bundles out there. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! I had on idea there was a special box for something like that. And I always thought someone took issue with the Zapper specifically, but what you're saying also makes sense. Thank you for the clarification! Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care. :)
Thank you so much! It's really means a lot that you think that. Please feel free to share any videos you like with your friends or on sites like reddit. Anything that helps get my content out there is greatly appreciated! :)

i got the action set for xmas. after you beating & master super mario bro's so many times and killed so many duck's i got board with the games. and go to the rental store and rent a nes game to pass the time. good time's
Your sets are so minty. It took me two years of searching eBay for a minty deluxe set and I’ve only seen two. The others look like they been tumbled in a dryer and made of yellow plastic.
Thank you! It's become much harder over the years to find anything video game related in nice condition. Congrats on getting your hands on a minty box, and thank you so much for watching and commenting! I have since added a few more NES console boxes to my collection I need to make a video about.
That's very true! I always thought that was strange as well, but it definitely doesn't stick out as much as Mario being recolored. What I'm seeing is that maybe the CAN and US versions are different. I'm not sure why they'd bother with that, but it's interesting anyway! Thank you for watching, take care! :)
As mentioned, earlier SNES consoles (which all included SMW) did have 2 controllers! There was a later version which only had 1 controller with no game. Thanks for watching!
I have 4 nes.. 3 super nes.. 2 sega genesis... 1 turbo graphx 16... 1 atari 2600... 1 atari 7800...all controllers except rob the robot... hundreds of games.
I still have never owned a console to this very day! excluding the 3ds that I used maybe 10 times tops cause I literally can't physically push those ridiculous small-ass buttons in a meaningful way. PC > all
Wow, that's fascinating! Whatever you enjoy! And haha, I totally hear you about the 3DS's buttons being small. Thankfully most games I played were touch screen based. Thank you for watching! :)
Why the hell does this video exist? So that ANOTHER guy with too much money can show off his stuff that he never uses...? Oh an btw, that sport set stickered version must have been for the canadian market. So far about the knowledge of what is talked about in this video...

there is a Nintendo Nes Samurai version , only released in India ,(very rare ) by the way great vid :)
I'd never heard about that one! Thank you for watching. :)
Thinking about it again, I think there was a version of the Challenge Set that had both SMB3 AND Dr. Mario....
@@TheGameDisplay also there is a control deck that I keep seeing that says it has Mario 3 but it’s not the challenge set either
That's weird about there not being a Seal of Quality on one of the carts. It's almost like one of the labels is an early version before it was fixed up and finalized. :P
Take care!
@@TheGameDisplay I suppose that’s how I catch all that cool SMB stuff people miss. 😆
I have my action set with the styro form and the original box with it and the rest of it
Hi there! I noticed that you are missing the following sets
Test market NES
nes control deck with official players guide
Power set with gray zapper
Nes control deck that came out between later action set and top loader
You are also missing the power set with the gray gun
That's the one I had.
you are missing a bundle... the Basic Set with only 1 controller......
How about the original R.O.B. deluxe set test market bundle.
Very nice collection (jealous) 👌🤝 one day I want to be like you when I grow up 😆
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Glad i found a Sports Set Box for $20 now i need to get everything to complete it 😁
Here's this fun fact: back in October of 1985 Nintendo released the NES Deluxe Set as a test on New York, Chicago and LA to see if it's popular or not.
I had the power set but mine came with a gray zapper.
I've seen a rob cib Nintendo console set and the box didn't say deluxe it that a really rare version of the Rob release or do you know?
I believe that was an extremely early version of the box just sold during Nintendo's NES test run in New York? If so, I have heard about it once before, but I'd love to see it someday!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)
Nintendo also released a snes bundle in 95 that included dkc and two controllers inside my brother bought that one in 95.
That's an awesome bundle! Perhaps we'll have to look at the SNES bundles that I own as well. Thank you for watching! :)
@@TheGameDisplay The bundle that came with super Mario Allstars and super Mario world also came with two controllers
You missed the players guide bundle buddy. Official in same style box as earlier release with an inset picture of the black guide.
Thank you for watching! I have since picked that one up, along with the Basic Set that I show in my most recent video. :)
Lower the Adderall dose and slow down....still great stuff lol....glad to find ya
What was just the basic first NES box that was sold and what year? Not necessarily bundle
Check out this video I made about it a couple of years ago:
ua-cam.com/video/oPfcfGtU0gE/v-deo.html
Thank you for watching! :)
@@TheGameDisplay I just watched your video about using the AV Famicon, so thanks for the link Andrew.
I have a sports set but it doesnt say "new!" on it like yours
My sister and I got a Nes bundled with Bubble Bobble. I don't remember what year that was.
I had a deluxe that came with grey zapper, the robot, super Mario bros. Both controllers. But no duck hunt or gyro game. Pretty sure it was in 1985
I always had SMB1 and Duck Hunt as separate cartridges. Was there a bundle that came with both games before the multi-cart was made?
Take care. :)
In Europe, we call the NES top loader NES 2... and it's never been released down here.
Somehow i got a all grey running pad and i have the normal one too
You deserve more subscribers
yeah he needs more subs he's too much of a good creator to not have such little subs
Thank you so much! It's really means a lot that you think that. Please feel free to share any videos you like with your friends or on sites like reddit. Anything that helps get my content out there is greatly appreciated! :)
I had a Challenge Set that includes Super Mario Bros. 3
9:38 nice match cut
love the nes advantage and nes max controllers best.
Still Missing one very super rare boxed Set! (USA North America Release! Actually another boxed release with a Game! See if anyone can think about which ones missing!!! : )
I have a nes power set with a Grey Zaper
i got the action set for xmas. after you beating & master super mario bro's so many times and killed so many duck's i got board with the games. and go to the rental store and rent a nes game to pass the time. good time's
I’ve never seen the NES satellite before!
I'm glad I was able to introduce one to you! Thank you for watching. :)
We had the NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bundle pack in England.
You forgot to mention that there are two versions of super Mario Bros and duck hunt
Anyone who got an nes. After the snes released? Just wanna know. Please answer
Wrong. The snes came with smw and two controllers. IDK where you lived that you seen snes with only one controller.
1 atari 7800...all controllers except rob the robot... hundreds of games.
and a nintendo wii which I hate.
The first few boxes wasn’t North American cause it was a Mattel version which is European I believe
do ps2 bundles next.
Those could be fun to look at! Thank you for watching, and for the suggestion. :)
@@TheGameDisplay ok cool, your welcome. :)
:)
Collecting anything is a very interesting hobby. You're always going to end up with things that are awesome collection-wise but don't get a massive amount of use. My video game collection is far from something that I just payed max price off of ebay for though. Please feel free to check out some of my other videos.
Thank you for watching, and take care! :)
@@TheGameDisplay I will not watch any other video of yours. Your knowledge just isn't there, as in 'I'm the only guy on earth who has this sport set'... 🤦
