This is quite extraordinary. My mother watched this and without knowing who Neil Innes is, said this guy should be more well known if h can produce work like this. I told her this was a spoof and she did not believe me. She said he could make a very good living singing like this all the time. My brother watched this convinced he was watching Dean Stockwell expand on his role in Blue Velvet. Neil does a brilliant job with this gem!!
"It's not long now before We turn this corner And when we do we'll Keep on going Down that road." God these songs bring back so many memories, what a great show that was.
I asked Neil a few years ago why Innes Book of Records isn't available on DVD. He said BBC wouldn't release the tapes. Maybe now (RIP Neil) they should do the honourable thing in memory of a genius. Lovely man.
The Innes Book of Records was one of those programmes which almost nobody saw, but which anyone who did will never forget. Absolutely brilliant but just a bit too quirky for most people's taste. As others have said, this is such a good song in its own right - and so well performed - that the element of parody is lost. Except maybe in the introduction - 'you know - not so long ago - and it's been very lucky for me' which nicely spears all those 'sincere' showbiz intros.
A spoof of a spoof (see Mel Brooks' "singing" "High Anxiety" Tune from the 1977 flick. Similar melody on verse ( Believe this is from circa 1979-80). Check out the OUTRE Sinatraesque arrangement ! Love you Neil!
The champagne was Canadian The hostess sang a song I contemplated suicide Then you came along! You're so spontaneous You hit the spot Nothing but everything Is all you've got You're so spontaneous You top the bill Your elegant savoir-fair Gives me a thrill! Spontaneous live You're so spontaneous Please don't ever change You're so "if I ruled the world" And "home on the range" You're so spontaneous In each and every way So spontaneous What more can I say? For this is the moment The moment is now The moment is you So come on, take a bow! You're so spontaneous You knock me flat You pull those little white rabbits out Of my top hat You're so spontaneous Abracadabra Spontaneous Well that's what you are! For this is the moment The moment is now The moment is you Come on, take your bow! You're so spontaneous It's wunderbar Spontaneous Spontaneous Spontaneous That's what you are!
As I was braying: "parodist. He falls in love with whatever song type he's copying. Terry Martin 6 years ago The Innes book of records was one of the most spontaneous programmes ever to be on TV, Rutland Weekend was pretty cool too" Too bad that program from the UK never made it into the USA.
Yes. John Altman was indeed brilliant at all his arrangements for the show. For another example of sheer brilliance check out "Concrete Jungle Boy" and "Time to Kill". You'll probably need tissues or a hanky for the latter. There are plenty of others from the series I could reel off the top of my head.
If you didn't know this was a parody you could mistake it for the real thing. In a way it's weird, because the mimicry is so close it ceases to be a send up and asks to be judged as a crooner's show-stopper in its own right: rather as some of the Rutles tracks make you wonder why they're not on real Bealtes albums. I admire Neil Innes hugely but he's not cruel enough to be a GREAT parodist. He falls in love with whatever song type he's copying.
It's not mimicry so much as a loving recreation with new words, melodies, and the parody is almost entirely in the meticulously studied and polished musical arrangement. It has been said that the Rutles is not a parody of the Beatles, rather than that of George Martin's excellent arrangements. When Neil Innes performed his own songs, for instance on chat shows, he even parodies himself, and his original performance, equipped only with a guitar and an audience, as on here from about 9 minutes: ua-cam.com/video/CSch3COnTBo/v-deo.html

@@MrMagusperde At the risk of being cynical, BBC Legal has never been overly prone to 'honour', or even 'good sense.'
Neil Innes is awesome!! I love him!!

Rest In Peace!

I and all my friends did; but that might be that I insisted they watch one, and they all became instant fans...
