      Thank you for being here and watching it! I love hearing stories about how long these things have stood the test of time for others. You really have to plug in to something / a signal chain that's 3-5x it's price to beat it. And at this point, even just how it looks gives me a certain feeling / nostalgia for when I started. Hope yours brings you 20 more years of happy playing!

    I agree one hundred percent about this box. I've been using mine since 2005 as my front end preamp for all my guitars. I follow it with a Keeley compressor pedal. I use other effects in my chain, but the DI is the only one that is essential.

    Great video thanks…I have one of these and I use it for solo acoustic gigs. Just me, my guitar and vocals mic. I run into a Presonus Studiolive AR8 desk and through the RCF EVOX 12 speaker.
    I use the Taylor 310CE with Expression 2 pickup system.
    The thing is I just can’t get a great guitar sound with this setup. Is the Para DI surplus to requirement or am I just not using it properly?
    I stand close by my system when playing so there’s no distance between guitar and mixing desk. Is the Para DI necessary with me being so close to desk? Is it only useful when guitar cable has to run a long distance to mixing desk?
    Any advice on getting the best out of this setup much appreciated. I don’t have a lot of knowledge in the area of eq’ing live guitar. Thank you

    • @BradDollar
      @BradDollar  6 місяців тому +3

      Hey James! Appreciate you watching! That's a great question! The Para DI is definitely adding more to the quality of the signal and overall tone than going straight into a typical live sound desk. At the very least, this DI should at least sound the same, but in reality it should be noticeably better. I would double check a few things:
      1) Make sure you're using it with Phantom Power (48v) or a very new battery. It does its magic with active electronics.
      2) Make sure the gain on it is up. I typically leave mine around 1'o clock and it works great.
      3) Make sure the master volume at the top is at noon or higher.
      4) Check the invert switch
      5) Check your cables
      6) Make sure you're going from the DI to the mixer with an XLR cable out of the mic out. This is using the DI in its true nature.
      Give that a shot and let me know if it improves!

    Does this unit make a piezo under saddle pickup usable? Mine sounds really fizzy and I'm thinking of selling it.

    • @BradDollar
      @BradDollar  10 місяців тому +1

      It definitely helps! The preamp plus the EQ give you some room to improve the tone. It will always have that piezo vibe but you can make it a lot more usable. It may be worth checking out the LR Baggs Voiceprint DI as well. I don't like the dry DI side of it as much as the Para DI, but the ability to create a simulated mic sound from your actual instrument could help you split the difference.
      I also just posted part 2 with a demo of how it sounds if you're interested.

    Funnily enough I opened up for Otis Gibbs and he swore by this box. He had a lovely tone. My Martin D-28 came with an Fishman Aura Ellipse Aura but that went ‘pop’ after a year and couldn’t get any word back from either company. Hence why I’m looking about to sort my sound out after ‘just doing wit!h the last ten years and saw your recent review after googling the box.

    Thanks so much for considering my question.

      @BradDollar  11 місяців тому +2

      Thank you so much for being here! The “correct” way to do it would be for you to get an interface of some kind that has a preamp in it - which is most these days. You won’t need much. With some extra accessories you could technically use the LR Baggs on the front end as a preamp, but you would still need an interface to get that signal into a computer. Let me know if you need some recommendations.

    • @BradDollar
      @BradDollar  10 днів тому +1

      That’s awesome! I hope you have a great show. Honestly, I would keep it real simple. Make sure the input gain (little knob on the front) is where you like it (not overly distorting) and make sure the output gain is loud/healthy (usually around noon, top output knob). After that, the only other thing I’d probably tweak once on stage is the notch filter to make sure it doesn’t feedback or make your guitar sound woofy. Find where it sounds like it’s about to feedback and then turn it down. Everything else I’d probably leave alone until I heard it in person. You might want a little extra brightness and little less lows on the EQ, but that would be my last move. Overall goal in my mind - don’t overly tweak until you know what it’s going to sound like in person.
      I hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching!

      Totally get what you’re asking as well! Since the sound of an acoustic electric is the sound of the pickups, and with those staying the same between DI’s, I’m not sure how to show a “before.” None of these DIs make it sound more acoustic or like itself. That’s going to be in the pickups. The goal here is not to see how they stack up to the original guitar sound but to see how they stack up to each other.
      I am working on a part 3 to go over the EQ section so I’ll throw in a sample of it miked up so there’s at least some sort of reference to the source.
      Appreciate you watching!

    Is it better than the AER Colouriser D.I. preamp?

    • @BradDollar
      @BradDollar  8 місяців тому

      I haven’t used the AER personally. I’ve never really put it in the same camp due to price and honestly, it running off of a power supply and not phantom power is a dealbreaker for me. It also looks prone to breaking with that type of case and those cheaper exposed knobs. That said, I’m sure it’s cool (Tommy Emmanuel uses one so it can’t be that bad right?) and it certainly won’t make anything sound worse! If I ever get my hands on one, I’ll put it up against the LR Baggs.
      Thank you for being here and watching!!

    • @A.I.-fu5kz
      @A.I.-fu5kz 8 місяців тому

      @@BradDollar First, thank you for your kind answer. I have both. And man, I can assure you the AER body is, even though made from aluminium, it is almost bullet proof. Nos cratches or any sign of usage after 5 years! The knobs are solid as solid can be, everything is high end, but what else would you expect for almost 700 bucks? While the Baggs provide 48V phantom, the AER provides 24V phantom to condenser mics but it doesn´t operate on phantom power, as you well remarked. I power it with a 24V power bank (meant for laptops) and it works just fine for about 50 hours. The main difference though, is the approach to tone shaping, the Baggs has a much easier straight forward way to adjust low, mid and high EQ levels while it also lets you adjust the notch per string (A, D, G, B). The Baggs also has an FX Loop balanced in/output for external FX´s devices or pedals connected via a splitter, which can be great for those who want to add that external FX before it is amplified and EQ is added by the Baggs. The AER doesn't have an FX Loop balanced bin/output and then a big difference is that for EQ adjustments on an AER Colouriser you first chose an EQ bandwidth and only then adjust the amount of increase or decrease. So it's literally just 1 EQ level setting. The Biggs has 3. My experience is the Baggs is easier to re-adjust quickly during a concert and being powered by external phantom is a huge plus. I am very interested though in hearing your opinion if maybe you get the chance to test one and compare. Thank you.

    Best if you want to ignore Grace Designs. I love the Bix for piezo pickups on acoustic instruments

    When i go to gigg i take this di and two stereo j radial boxes. I test out each one when i set up according to what acoustic guitar i am going to use and what kind of pick up is in it. I mostly rember what works with what. Sometimes i just like the phantom power radials j series stereo boxes . It all depends on what my ear tells me at acceptable levels.

      What a good toolbox you have! That really is the best way to do it - pick the right DI for that guitar in that moment. Especially with how particular acoustic guitars can be. Bet you sound great!

    I have 2 of these LR Baggs DI boxes. I use one at church where I lead worship using an acoustic electric, but I’ve recently started playing with a variety band playing mostly electric guitar and I’m in the process of figuring out what works best for my pedal board.
    For the band I’m mostly playing my Telecaster through a Fender Twin and using basic effects like Blues Driver, Mooer yellow comp, MXR carbon copy and a MXR analog chorus.
    I’ve been curious if I could employ my other Para Acoustic DI on this board but haven’t tried it yet. Now I think I will experiment!!
    Thanks Brad!!

      Be careful, I've read that some DI cant go in front of effects pedals plugged thru it. I wonder

      That’s awesome! It seems like there’s always another way or place to use one of these. I love it in line with a pedal board, but it can be a handy routing tool too. Thanks for sharing how you use yours!
