  • In this video, Andrew, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot, will take you on a narrated walk along Upper St. Charles Ave. This is a companion video to our Lower St. Charles Ave. video which you can find here • St. Charles Avenue New... .
Today, we're going to take you on a walk along St. Charles Ave. This is the street that's famous for the St. Charles streetcar that runs from the French Quarter to the Garden District, and that's the part that most visitors see.
But today, we are going to take you further along that street, to see what you'd see if you rode the streetcar beyond the Garden District, and it's worth it. We'll see Tulane University and Loyola University. We've got Audubon Park, a lot of beautiful houses in the vein of what you'd see in the Garden District, and plenty more stories that a lot of our visitors never get to hear.
We filmed this as a 4k video so get your own get your big screen if you got one. We also used surround sound recording so your headphones are great for this one too.

I sent my mom this video (she lives in Atlanta), and put the two books on my Amazon wish list that you mentioned toward the end of the video about the banana industry. Thanks for the background on Henry Hobson Richardson. He designed our city hall, part of the state capital, and a few local mansions. That spawned some cheap knockoffs in local houses, and my own house features some Richardsonian romanesque detailing interpreted in local bluestone and orange brick in 1885. Thanks for the background!

The house at 57:54 was a bed and breakfast i stayed at on my first visit to New Orleans in 2004. I'm not sure if it's still a bnb, but since I am a HUGE fan of historic architecture. My favorite style is Victorian, but pretty much any building built before the 1930s catches my eye!! Funny you mentioned cruise ships....that was the purpose of my 2 visits to New Orleans (the last in 2016), along with sightseeing.

My oh my, how much this area has changed in the last 15-16 years. I attended a National EMT Convention in NOLA the weekend before Katrina hit. I did a one night "Ride Along" with the NOFD in the St. Charles Ave area. It looked much different back then. I also hope that the crime there has diminished... You never mention the Collums Hotel. That house was used, not just featured, in an old movie with Brooke Shields. And in Clint Eastwood, Tightrope.

@@FreeToursbyFootHQ hi Andrew. We have several streets like st Charles here in Melbourne Australia. Unfortunately, most of the beautiful old mansions were torn down in the 1950s and 60s and replaced by ugly office blocks. They called it progress at the time.

The architecture of the Vaccaro House is unusual. The second and third stories look like Tudor beam and mortar. But the first floor and porch looks like a 20th century interpretation of Gothic. The decoration on the porch pillars looks like a simplified version of flying buttresses.

This guy takes great pictures of broken sidewalks and streetcar tracks. Kinda misses the actual scenery which in this case should be architecture. I grew up in New orleans, went to De La Salle High School ('58-62) and Tulane, ('62-66). So this area was quite specifically my old stomping grounds. Watched this to see how it had changed as it is unlikely that I will ever get back to see it for myself. Good to know the sidewalks are still broken. And this guy is boring. On a practical level, he needs to move slower, cover less territory and for cryin' out loud, pay attention to what the camera is actually looking at. FWIW, his tour of Bourbon St. is significantly worse.
