I"m saving this for later, I've been trying to work out how to DJ on the OT without BPM constraints for YEARS. I like speeding up the set Ala Aphex Twin as it goes on and I';m getting back into music. Perfect! Thank you so much, really need to get some lessons off you some time!
I use something like this with my set. I usually stick with 4 bars because it’s less confusing but I love to fade in the new with the cross fade and fading the other out with the track volume. I don’t like to do it with the cross fader because I like to just have the scenes for fx because I get confused or want to stack an effect with my transition. This is my favorite thing though. I always liked DJ sets and transitions are basically what really makes a DJ in my mind.
Love the template, but I've found that transitioning with this trick in the manner that I mix techno (i.e long drawn-out transitions) sounds less than stellar because both tracks' volume drops too much at the center point of the X-fader. As in, the overall volume curve of the mix sounds like a fade-out to fade-in >< when the volume level of the mix should remain consistent with the level of each individual track playing solo... If that makes sense 😄
Man! What if I want loop for example 8 bars but I want the loop to Sync with the master tempo of the project always? I want use the octratrack for transition from a track to another but I want the 2 tracks are in time beatmatched like a DJ. Is it possible to follow this setup video? I imagine that I have to enable time stretching.
Cool stuff as always Matt! I’m not in front of my studio to try this but my main question regarding all this, don’t you want the 2 tracks as you transition to match the bpm to have a smooth transitions? Having the 2 tempos colliding is never a desired effect. The 8 bar loop, awesome definitely makes more interesting loops.
Yes and this how is you do that :) you just need to match your BPM. THe point of this is to show how you can do create a looper that is independent of the project. So you have the option to do anything.
Do you think that it's possible to automate starting recording via YES (arming) and stopping recording via REC3? I want to compose whole set so it will just play by itself using song mode, and I am looking for a setting that will allow me to set start recording and stop recording trigs on the final pattern of the bank (I am using one bank as one song/track approach)
Hey Matt, you say that the only way possible to record more than 4 bar loop on the Octatrack is by pressing REC button twice. Why not make a pattern for that track half the speed, it will then give you 8 bars and you can only use REC triggers to do the job? Am I missing something here?
I think that double tapping the Rec3 button would be the only change for a mk1. I’m not sure what the combo is though. I’m renting a mk2 but have my eyes on a mk1 at a good price (like half that of the mk2 :)
When I DJ I also EQ both channels to allow them to play at the same time without clashing. I have tried this with the Octatrack as well but had some issues with the fader not having an assignable fader curve. Have you thought about adding EQ to the template, even though it would require an external controller?
@@EZBOT_ PERFECT, thank you so much! I'm sure I could have read a manual or forum but I thought I would ask the master blasta as I was watching a LOT of your videos until 5am this morning... HAHA falling asleep to your soothing tones. I am one step away from joining your discord/patreon all because of the octacosim spasim! Love yer work

Man, really setting the “bar” high on Octatrack workflow and capabilities…awesome work ❤️🔥
I need to come back after I've had coffee. Yet I am tossing a like for the work you do and helping others on this device that seems insurmountable.
Great trick Matt, I've been having a ton of Octatrack learning breakthroughs this past month and your videos are a large part of that so thank you!

Appreciate your content Matt
Incredible video, thank you for the tip :)
Please make an OT tips and tricks book EZ 🙏
That’s a good idea 👍

Totally feel you on that and I wish there was something I could do about it :/
OMG i just got an idea.. we should try the filter and not the volume
YEP! I figured it out!
@@EZBOT_ filter works also if you can spare the effect block
@@willp3754 it sure does and I do have the fx available. It will be implemented into all my templates
if you could buy one device and already had a Syntakt - Octatrack or Digitakt?
Awesome, you have reached OT Jedi level. When do you plan to release the new template?
I was going to last night but I made that video instead. I still have to design a few more scenes

how much extra work is this to do on a OT MK1, seems like it's the same steps? It's been a while for me, is it worth upgrading to the mk2?
I think it's worth it to upgrade

I did in fact add that to the template!
Thanks. Why don’t you set the recording time to 64 instead of max?
The recording step length doesn't take into account track division. So you can only record 4 bars with RLEN.
this workaround is nuts!! thank you for sharing, would this still work switching to a pattern located in a different bank?
Absolutely, as long as it had a matching part
i dont get this . what dj is going to straight crossfade 2 different bpm tracks and train wreck out of time through the transition?
No DJ will do that, you have to BPM match first then loop. I am teaching you how to build the looper
ahh got it , thanks@@EZBOT_
🔥
I have the MK1, what do I press instead of REC3 to do this?
Hold the track you want to trigger the Rec 3 command and press MIDI
