One of the quickest and easiest ways to determine the sex of a cockatiel (or any bird, for that matter) is to feel their hip bones. If you have a male, the hip bones will be narrow... and the female's will be wide enough to pass an egg. And you can feel the bird's hip bones by holding the bird upside down and placing your thumb onto the bird's vent. Below the vent you will feel two protrusions under the skin. Those are the bird's hip bones. It'll be very obvious when you feel the bones as to a male or female, for the male hip bones are less than half a centimeter apart, whereas a female's will be more. (This works for all birds, you'll just need to adjust the scale accordingly.)
At last! Thank you! I finally found a way of telling which is which! I have recently been bought 2 lovely cockatiels and I'm still learning. I was told which was which but I'm positive it's the other way around. This video has confirmed my way of thinking. May I ask you is it just time when it comes to my birds standing on my hands and coming out of the cage? I'm interacting with them several times a day. I've had them for a week. Also how do I get them to eat fruit and veg. They just won't touch anything other than seeds or millet. I've also tried other foods but they won't eat anything, just the seed mix. Thank you in advance! 😁
Hi! This video can help you to teach your bird to eat fruits and vegetables: ua-cam.com/video/ZhkmBa9yICo/v-deo.html By the way, you can get them out of the cage now. The only problem will be how to get them back inside, but sometimes when they're hungry they go inside by themselves ^^ For more cockatiel information search the internet. hi denny, i really want someone to talk to so i'll tell you this story. my birds we're outside for some fresh air, i was playing with them in the cage. my baby Nala was climbing around the cage when all of the sudden she flew away. i'm really worried, she's still somewhere close. i took a cage, opened it and put seeds in hoping she will come to eat, but she flew to a tree in my yard. that's good, i guess? i waited. but she never came, and i lost sight of her.i really hope she comes home i don't think she can make it alone :( thinking that she could be dead any time now really breakes my heart. i'm from kladanj btw. i was wondering, if you could do a video what to do to find lost birds?
I also lost one of my budgies it was a white birdy i kept my bird cage in the balcony at the evening almost the end of the day i didn't close the door properly it flew out and i only realized in the morning i was so sad as there were eagle's & crows & pigeons i got very scared as she would be there lunch and then i realized how much it hurts when someone loses there furry friend., This for our birds that got lost. I give this note to our birds , if you have already finished your lives . I wish that you will be happy in heaven 😔 you have always been in our hearts and you will now also from heaven except. And we miss you😢😔
Few easy ways to identify them is look closely at their cheek patch feather if it's bright orange it's a boy and if dull orange than girl, most obvious one would be just whistle near your bird if it tries to replicate the vocal tune by you it's a boy, the girls are not that vocal, they are pretty quiet. The other methods posted by others are good also but it would more likely freak your bird out, if you haven't bonded with it yet and cause it to hate you.
Interesting video!! :) There's also a Cockatiel Gender Identification on youtube. It shows that female cockatiel have yellow spot (the yellow feathered)/white spot (the white feathered) depending on the type, underneath the feathers when you spread it out. Whereas the male dont. applicable for 8 months onwards. But most accurate should still be the DNA testing to determine the gender
Hello! Probably one in a million change of you seeing this but I have a question, is it bad to clip a birds wings? I am getting a bird and I don’t want to hurt it.
It won't hurt them, depends on which option has more pros for you and your bird. If you do, which I recommend in most cases, don't cut too much off. Clipping too many feathers too short may harm your bird as it falls on the ground and fails to land safely. Also clipped wings don't mean you can't loose the bird in some circumstances. Look up the pros and cons and look at examples of badly-cut parrot wings, so you can avoid it. Find a good vet! :)
