Hi Michelle. It's probably coals to Newcastle but I find using an old cut up credit card works if I want to score into the paper. A craft knife in my hands would be lethal! Thank you for such straightforward advice and demos.

Steve is an awesome instructor, sketches and paints masterfully. And he straight up recommends artist grade paint and the best paper right from the start even if it is a few. None of the muddied up stuff that makes students feel like they can’t be artists. I also enjoy how he’s not afraid just to paint his composition for the whole video time. That’s how one learns. Awesome instructor and graphic artist. The real deal.
i found this at an almost perfect time as i have spent a month doing oak tress as acrylic wall murals and wondered how i would reverse the coloring (from dark to light to light to dark) to do it with water color. the knife really does simplify it :D

I just wanted to suggest something that came out well for me - using a piece of natural sponge to stamp some bark-like shapes on the trunk. Thank you so much for all your videos!!! I have been painting for 15 years and still learn something new from every video.

scratching the paper with the xacto knife might be permanent but another consideration for a softer look maybe try those embossing tools for card makers? the ones with the little tiny dots at the end. where you push pressure into the paper. technically youd leave trail mark but you might get more rounded softer dips and valleys then scratch lines.
Great ideas... I have tried the embossing tools, I use them for colored pencil work, I didn't find it as good as a knife but need to experiment more with different sizes. Thanks for watching :-)

Michele these videos are so helpful and wonderful and here’s something I really love: you talk to your viewers like we each have a brain. On so many of these videos, the tutor talks to viewers as if we are in kindergarten, or as if we have no idea why we’re there. Thank you Deirdre, I must confess that although I watch a lot of UA-cam channels, I don't watch many of the art youtubers. My business mentor encouraged me to make videos (for social media) and I found that I loved making UA-cam videos most of all. I have been teaching in the real world for decades so I think that's a bit of an advantage.
Trees are a renewable resource, waxed paper to wrap your sandwiches with is better than plastic wrap or a plastic case. They even have videos to make waxed fabric to wrap sandwiches in. Love your videos, I've been binge watching them while in the house social distancing. Stay safe.

Great techniques here, you clearly are a master at your craft. Could you please advise me on something. My skill level is low and I’m looking to create a bark effect on a bird box. I will be sealing the outside with some spare black liquid flashing I have which really gives it a bark like texture as it’s so thick and I will purposefully apply it roughly, but how to paint shades onto an existing texture and how many shades would you go for? Bearing in mind I am a complete amateur.
You will need to use acrylic, and if you get some dark brown and white you should be able to make a range of shades. Dry brush technique will help if you have a look you will find some acrylic tutorials (not on my channel yet though).

Just found your channel I’m a Railway modeller and modeller working on trees and having bit of trouble getting the right shades for Scots pine trunks especially the orange branches any tip would be appreciated.... regards fred
Hi Fred, If you start with a brown, then adjust, if the trunks need to be lighter add white, if they need to be greyer add a little blue. Blue added to brown will push it towards grey. Alternatively add warm yellow and red to warm up the colour/make orange. Do you use acrylics?
Your "Run On Sentences" drive me crazy! Please slow down a tad! The British brogue is hard to understand sometimes for English Speaking Countries. Thank you Machele! I love your tutorials. I wish I didn't have to use Shift < to slow you down to understand. Thank You!

I have a hard time making the small, delicate twigs on the end.
@@LilCraftyNook It's best to switch for a smaller brush and paint outwards from the trunk.
Fir type trees (pine, cedar, etc.) at a closer view are a bit of a problem for me when they are closer.

What kind of palette are you using?
It's an old video and without watching it again... but most of my palettes are by Frisk, at least the plastic ones.

It's an old video so not sure, but generally for youtube technique demos SAA Practice or Bockingford, nothing expensive.
