I love the spatter and also credit cards. The paints look interesting esp glimmer effect. Good to know that brand of mask can stain. Love your classes!
Tolerance people. Learn it, live it, love it! Just to offer another viewpoint: We Americans seldom say rubbers anymore, though some middle aged Americans may still get the idea, certainly most whom are younger than 55 yrs of age were converted to use the words condom and eraser back in the 1980’s. Similar to the massive confusion of pants vs trousers vs underpants as compared to England’s Pants vs Trousers and knickers. We have a subset of pants that are called trousers, but all trousers are pants, and nobody wears underpants or underwear outside of trousers or pants. Perhaps you might try putting inadditional effort to be more open minded considering some of England’s popular colloquialisms are quite vulgar here like c uh nt for generally any adult human or f agg for a cigarette, or ff agg ott for a type of meatball. Here those words are so offensive that it is often considered a form of hate speech. Let’s just all try to get along? And “Have a lovely day!”💕💞🥰😊
I am really glad I watched your tutorial on different things to do with masking Fluid. It has opened the door to many possibilities for me now. Thank you too for how interesting you hit your videos.
Malaysian here! We learned british english, so we called it rubber. But it seems as we get older we watch american tv shows and read off the internet that our vocabulary just morphed into saying eraser instead xD
thank you Michele for this video of these amazing techniques. this session was a lot of work for you….very appreciative , clear and informative giving me the confidence to practice them and to get the tools to apply the fluid….🐈⬛🐾🐾
If you load a brush with very soapy water, you can do your masking and rinse it right off! I only use a cheap crafting brush (not a fine one!) and it works great! Just get the soap up to the ferrule. Thanks for the video!
I'm new to your videos Michele (May 2021), but I've learned more from several of them than I did in my high school, college or university art classes (didn't take that many). SO informative! Especially about drawing perspective, equipment and techniques. I am learning so much. Thank you so much for being generous with your time and knowledge. I can't afford your classes right now, but these certainly help!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber I've passed on your UA-cam videos to my friend, too, so we can do some practice painting sessions together. Thanks so much Michele, Jan in Seattle, WA
Find your tricks with pipes, & frayed materials really effective, like all the ideas you presented us with. Also the colours are good! Thanks seems fun! Must try!
I’m really enjoying theses masking fluid techniques and tips for using on watercolor painting. I have got some great uses for my upcoming jumping fish painting soon. I am going to be practicing quite a few days to see how these work for me. Thanks for sharing this wonderful & fun looking video with us.
Thank you for this video. I am returning to watercolor after many years of using oil and acrylics. These masking fluid ideas are awesome, I can’t wait to try them as I continue to build my watercolor techniques and skills.
Dip your brush or toothbrush into a strong solution of washing up liquid & water before masking fluid & if using it a lot, I wipe off excess in paper towel then dip in w up liquid & water again before dipping back into the masking fluid. When finished wash your (old) brush & its fully clean for next use. A tip I found out about 15 years ago & it really does work. Thank you for sharing these great tips, given me lots of ideas. 🎨💐🤗
🤩👍 Love these techniques!! You should really write a 'how to' book. 😊 With the ball pin-head dot technique, you could stick the pin into the end of a pencils eraser to make it less volatile to work with. Lol 😂 I've made texture tools before by taking a rectangle eraser and sticking several pins into it, even making designs such as a heart or starburst, then I'd dip it into my acrylic paint and "stamp" the pin head side down onto the canvas. (It works especially well for putting areas of dotted rows onto something that you want to be very uniform, such as borders or a striped shirt.) ☺️ Thanks again for sharing your vast array of art knowledge!
Thank you! And thanks for the tips :-) Not planning a book, but I will be doing some online courses in watercolour techniques, the first one will be ready in November :-)
Love this video. I use to make mandalas with a dotting tool. The dotting tool would work great here and they are reusable and you get a variety of sizes.
We are back aboard! Sorry. Missed you. Wonderful ideas. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Having so much fun together while practicing your suggestions.
Thank you for these suggestions! I think I’ll try the cardboard and netting for some interesting background shapes. Btw I used someone else’s suggestion for adding dish soap to the water to help clean up the masking fluid and it does help.
Thanks Michele. Loved this. Just a suggestion. Have you ever tried dipping your brush into liquid dishwashing soap or even half water half dishwashing liquid soap , before using it to apply masking fluid? I use taklon brushes for masking and dip in liquid dish soap first. I've been using the same brushes for two years. Have your rinse jar with liquid dish soap and water to rinse then set them in and no damage to brushes. Though I wouldn't use good painting brushes just in case.😉
The bar of soap works. I have one brush which I use for masking fluid and I rub it over a bar of soap bef I start. The masking fluid washes right out and leaves no trace on the brush 😊
Great ideas - particularly love the credit card reeds. Liked the bubble wrap one too. Best thing for it now. Have you noticed that it just isn't the same anymore - no satisfying pop! LOL!
Did you know that you can apparently use the Schminke miskit with water. One of the watercolour pouring UA-camrs uses it and then uses a brush with water to give her nice soft edges with her pours. She layers over and over with the Schminke misket on her poured works. It definitely stays on for days and days with her pours as they do take days and she has to wait for them to dry. I have just bought a bottle to have a play with. When I first went looking for masking fluid I nearly balked at the cost and it was a local to me brand. (As local as it can be at least as it was an Australian maker). I transfer some into a needle tip bottle to make fine lines. I also use a ruling pen and a dip pen occasionally. I also use a silicone tipped brush or wipe out tool to apply masking fluid.
Have you tried Pebeo masking GUM from France, but available everywhere in bottles or pens. We have had good luck with it. I also use a slightly thinned down Windsor-Newton masking fluid, which I thin a bit with water. If I am just using masking in small amounts, I save and use my caps off of juice bottles. Works perfectly, and I can reuse over and over. Thanks.
I haven't tried a lot of masking fluids but the cheap ones I bought really were unimpressive. Then I forked out the money for Sennelier's masking fluid and was wowed. Provided you use good quality paper, it performs beautifully, I think. Even if you leave it there for hours because you were just trying something and didn't remove it right after drying! (Cheaper paper, it tends to rip it apart)
I've tried several of these tricks and they are great. I'll be adding others from your video. Have you ever used a sea sponge to dip masking fluid in and stamp patterns on your page. I love that technique and you just have to wash the sponge when finished.
You are the best teacher! Where do you come up with these ideas! Brilliant!! ❤️❤️ I've been watching so many of your videos that they are mostly the only ones that pop up!🤣
Thanks for the techniques and tips. I use rubber cement solvent for cleaning masking fluid mess off brushes. (Learned that working for a newspaper back before digital layouts were possible.)
I love your videos. I'm 67 years young and did my first 'painting' 2 weeks ago and it wasn't too bad. Encouraged by my first ever creation I tried another wet in wet masterpiece. WHAT WENT WRONG? The paper was still soaking after 9 (yes ... NINE DAYS!) I wonder if it was the salt I sprinkled onto the canvas. When I tried to remove the surrounding tape after trying to dry it on a lamp shade the tape took off the paper! After 2 hours on top of the lamp shade the middle section was crinkled but dry ... the next morning it was really damp again ... soggy would be a better word! I used proper artists 2 inch wide tape and a top notch brand of 140 pound watercolour paper. I've watched countless videos on UA-cam over the last few months and finally decided it was time to put brush to canvas. Help!!!!!
Let me know if you are going to try any of the tricks in this video, or perhaps you have new ones to share?
Using a silicone shaping tool is also really brilliant to apply masking fluid without having to gunk up brushes
Thank you, yes I have one of those, I actually prefer my ruling pen for precise application :-)
dipping your brush in soapy water before dipping it in masking fluid protects it from getting gummed up

Love the term “cotton buds” We call them Q-Tips 😊🇺🇸
Please don’t stop calling them rubbers that’s what they are. I will continue to say rubber. Love the tips. Love your channel
My assistant sighs every time I say that I have to call them erasers because of my American audience :-)
Why? we are english and we say rubbers! They hve to adapt just like we adapt to anerican videos with american words!
British ! We Brits call them rubbers .
Tolerance people. Learn it, live it, love it!

Thank you! That was such a great study on masking fluid. My favorite was the bus card and cardboard - a great way to shape birch trees. 😉👏👏👏

No problem Cynthia, good luck!

Oh I love your humor as well as your techniques. I’m definitely going to try these out soon!
Brilliant, good luck Cheri!
I really like the frayed rope. I may use that in an acrylic painting.
Thank you for this video. I am returning to watercolor after many years of using oil and acrylics. These masking fluid ideas are awesome, I can’t wait to try them as I continue to build my watercolor techniques and skills.

Thanks Jacqueline, I am so lazy I never do this, I must try it!
Thank you for this tutorial. These techniques are something I will definitely try. BTW, i really enjoy your wry sense of humor.
Oh thank you!
Wow, I learned something new, I have never worked with masking fluids!

I have heard of it, regarding bar soap but not tried it yet. I kind of just avoid brushes because knowing me I would forget the soap bit!
The bar of soap works. I have one brush which I use for masking fluid and I rub it over a bar of soap bef I start. The masking fluid washes right out and leaves no trace on the brush 😊

Jackson's art has masking fluid that is very reasonably priced and works great!
I have heard of the water thing but not tried yet... It is expensive here too, but it seems pretty good.

Haven't tried that one, I can see it would work though!
Wonderful tips, you are such a resource of knowledge.
