Cellar temperature is well below room temperature, even in summer it’s insulated by its earth surroundings so it’s a much more stable environment than above ground with consistently low temperatures that remain cool throughout the year.
Gold star from me Jessica for identifying the word "Ye" as being pronounced as it should be as "The" because the "y" is really a replacement for the now non existent letter thorn "þ" that can look like a letter p and a letter b combined with its sound of "th" as in the word "the". The terminal "e" on words like olde, shoppe, wilde, oake etc. should be silent. It was never there in the earlier middle English spelling but was added by Latin scribes to words, particularly when they didn't end in a vowel, just a bit like Italian words now all tend to end in a vowel. Brilliantly interesting video with lots of background history about these pubs and a temptation for me to visit one, or two, or three ....... when I'm next in London
And you, dear sir, get a gold-upvote to explain to me as a non native speaker how you pronounce those words. I was always wondering. And I was quite surprised when she pronounced it like this.
Always good when it gets out there that Ye Olde is pronounced simply The Old, always a pet peeve of mine. Cheers.
Great tour , check out Ye Olde Mitre in Hatten Garden , was used in the movie Snatch, great history to it , if you can find it 😉🍻

Thanks for your continued support of the channel, H!
All good historic pubs, but you also have to go to The Lamb and Flag, Ye Olde Mitre, The Hoop and Grapes (not as impressive looking due to it being so thoroughly remodeled though), The Prospect of Whitby (and while you’re in Wapping you can also go to the Town of Ramsgate and The Captain Kidd, which aren’t as old, but still worth a look if you like riverside pubs), across the Thames from there just one stop on the overground you have The Mayflower, and a bit further out of the city core The Spaniard is worth a visit if you’re interested in old pubs. I would also add The Lamb if you’re near Russell Square or at the British Museum- not as old as the others, but still historically relevant, as it has some of the only remaining original and certainly best preserved snob shades.
Here speaks a man after my own heart. Cheers.
This is a great tour, Thank You. I happened to stop in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese quite by accident while in London in March. Fantastic experience. Thanks for this one and the food tour too!

London use to be a great place for pubs when l was younger. In the 1980''s so many traditional pubs with wooden panelled walls and little stairways existed, that was before they pulled all the wood out and replaced it with tubular steel and glass. I fear many more pubs will disappear with the energy crisis.
Great video, thanks.
Glad you liked this one, Michael!

Love your Canadian pronouncing of 'stout' ! Cute. Years back, Dublin received a lot of people from Bristol, England and with them came the recipe for stout which Arthur Guinness, an ale brewer, jumped on and the rest is history. I am very pleased to say that I live in Vancouver Island, these days and love Canada and Canadians.
Thanks for the extra info, Liam! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Great video, I visited London October 22 with my wife and another couple. We had a drink ( or two ) in Dirty Dicks and also Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, both fantastic atmospheric pubs. Thanks for this wonderful vlog.

Great tour. I have been to london a few times and i always find it funny how almost every pub claims to be the oldest one.

Meantime based in Greenwich is worth a look
Good shout, Chris!
Everyone's commenting on how good the tour is so I don't need to do that again (obviously I agree). Instead, I would like to say how cool of a couple you are!
Awww, thanks Barbara! I thought only my mum thought that way. ;)
I just love your joggers where did your get them? and I can't wait to go to these pubs when we visit this summer!
We messaged Jess to find out for you - Athleta in Canada :)
The city of London (also called 'The square mile') has it's own police force, the smallest in the UK.
FYI. The basic difference between these two major beer classifications is how they are fermented. Ales are fermented with top-fermenting yeast at warm temperatures (60˚-70˚F), and lagers are fermented with bottom-fermenting yeast at cold temperatures (35˚-50˚F). Because of their warm fermentations, ales can generally ferment and age in a relatively short period of time (3-5 weeks). On the other hand, lagers take much longer to ferment (up to 6 to 8 weeks) because they are cold fermented.😊
Thanks for the extra info, John!
The Samuel Smith brewery, Tadcaster is not in York it is in North Yorkshire.
Tadcaster is half way between York and Leeds.
Thanks for the extra info, Leah!
❤❤
Very enjoyable and interesting points about these pubs and of beer from a female perspective. Would love to watch a vid by you both of a few INDEPENDANT London back street boozers that all sell ales.....Preferably Fosters free boozers. ;-]. Cheers.
Consider it on the list!

Cheers from Ontario, Canada. We're in London in January 2025 for 4 days and we're hoping to go on pub tour of the oldest pubs. Any suggestions on what tours are the best?
We run this one - currently one day a week but hoping to increase this year - that you might enjoy: freetoursbyfoot.com/the-city-of-london-historic-pub-tour/
Many pubs serve cask beer from wooden casks. Not just the Sam Smiths pub
👍👍🍺
I'm not really a beer drinker I prefer a mixed drink or vodka or wine 🍷 I really do like what is the difference between stote,Ale beer 🍺 and mead.... Doesn't The Old Bell have a couple of ghosts 👻 if I remember
Indeed, it does!
Thanks for the awesome video! OMG I want a pint of Sam Smiths stout so badly :)
Come see us and we'll get one!
Has a Free Walking Tour of Bath been posted yet?
Not yet but it is on the list!
Nicholsons is not a brewery. They do not brew at all.
You seem to be saying Soate instead of Stout
I thought she looked completely smitten by that dude when she is talking to him and then I saw in her description that he is her husband
I've been utterly ripped off in all of these pubs😂
Hah!
Brewdog beer is swill.
Don’t get your phone out 😂
Tadcaster is in Yorkshire - not York.
The city of London has connections of strange magic even to this day. It is a separate country in its own right. Its connection to freemasonry is overwhelming.
Excellent video and knowledgeable. Except that "Real Ale " now called craft beer to please the Americans. Did not start 10 years or so ago , it started with the advent of "CAMRA" The campaign for real ale way in I believe the 70,s . This was to break the monopoly of the Big brewer's and encourage small enterprise such as "Butcombe Bitter" and "Wadsworth 6X".
Thanks for the extra info, Alan :)
"Room temperature"? No, no, no! Cellar temperature, which should be cool at around 52 Degrees Fahrenheit, or about 11 Degrees in Catholic so you can taste the ale. Lagers, especially bad ones are served ice cold so you can't taste how bad they really are!
Matt stays sober while Jess is definitely “tiddly” !
Tours are very good, thank you. If your good looking hubby would style his beard backup to the chin he would knock off20 years.
really who cares
Aww, I love his long beard!
@@TheMuseumGuide allows him to save beer for later
@@alanjjeff It sure does! 🤣
Samuel Smith brewery is the best independent brewery in the UK, don't know how to manage to film in Samuel Smith pub due to the fact your not be allowed to use any mobile phones or any digital media
I asked permission in both pubs and they were more than happy to be on camera and allow us to film. :)
10:34 He was right in his time, but not so much now. I was born in London and it's turned into a real hole. Sadly.
Some of us still love it! ;)
Pubs are great aren't they? Bugger online dating, you go to the pub and meet your partner.
Brewdog sucks. Avoid. Especially in London when there are much better places to give your money to.
one of the reasons Charles Dickens visited so many pubs is because he liked his Booze
We can relate!
Your (first) real ale pint seems tiny. And for 4.80, it could be. Tipperary is now permanently closed. Boooo. Wheat beers have SOME wheat.
RIP Tipperary :( Lots of closures on Fleet Street recently.
You cannot talk about great beer and then go to a Sam Smiths pub. 😂
Sam Smiths is more for the ambiance ;)
Brew Dog has become shite
A few in the comments would agree with you!
British 🇬🇧 Living in pubs 😂😂😂alcoholics
London pub beer
🍺 😮 is RIPOFF
It's certainly not cheap these days..!
useless, what a lack of beer knowledge..
Worth the risk?!
What’s your specific complaint about the knowledge presented here? We’re not cicerones, but we know a lot about beer.
Thanks!
