Always enjoy watching the picker. We did wide rows, and a mounted IHC picker on a M. Husks weren't a problem. If we did Shell any the husks got tossed into a pen as bedding. We allowed the Holsteins to glean the corn stalks for a few weeks. Made plowing easier. You do things similar to what we did 60 years ago. A dirty tractor is field ready.
😂 yeah we are kinda out dated we are trying to get newer or just better shape equipment but the farm got so behind it’s gonna take a long time I never plan to have new equipment I like the old but I definitely need to get better and start rebuilding a tractor every couple years to stay in business but it’s expensive and we always end up needing something else
@@knappfarms I thought we were peasants in the 70s. The 80s came, and I watched the guys with the big, new equipment fold. We were in the black. I don't judge your operation.
I always enjoy watching what you are doing, and really could care less if your equipment is dirty.....that means it’s earning its keep! My brother would wash his 1486 every Sunday, I never washed my 5020.....and they were both dirty on Monday 😂 If you restore the 560 someday.....fantastic!.....but you are taking good care of it. Great video showing us all your steps.....I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ear corn wagon as perfectly filled as the one you showed.
Wish we had a mixer grinder back in the day! its on the goal list when we get cattle again! As for dirty equipment, I make a point to wash it 2-3 times a year, at least for spring and fall servicing. I get you on not having time.
Love watching all your projects. Work around a farm or ranch never ends. Watching makes me think of growing up in central Illinois. As a adult living on the west coast have kept my hand in ag by raising project lambs up until a few years ago. Now just have a couple of Hereford heifers that we are breeding for freezer steers. Your calves look really good. Balanced nutrition is so important to healthy, growing calves. Keep up the good work. Love all your vintage tractors. Sean
Glad you enjoy we are fairly close to where you grew up without a couple hours for sure of central Illinois but hey having a few cattle and your own beef is a lot better then going and getting Walmart hamburger
Cole the corn star just asked his followers to give money. I personally am so disappointed in him. Please don't let your channel change, your content is what we want to see!
What could he possibly be asking his followers for money for he makes more off UA-cam then most people make and has the farm on top of it I don’t see a situation where I would ever come on my channel and ask people for money I was raised earn what I get thanks for the support
Makes good feed!! A little junk lol... You should see all the chunks of stalks in our feed, custom blend mostly pelleted, will rolled corn mixed in, plenty of thumb sized chunks of stalks mixed in it🙄
Cows sure do good on ear corn, alot of fiber in the cobs. Nothing wrong with a tractor in it's work clothes, if you paint them up you won't want to get them dirty lol. Good video 👍👍
It has been the greatest grinder I’ve ever used just absolutely eats that corn up fast and like you said reliable never had a serious problem with it just general chains and stuff you would have wear out on anything
You know man, I'm also a huge fan of the older equipment. Easier to work on for sure not to mention it's just a classic adventure if it ain't broke don't fix it in my book. Keep up the great work.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Don't let people get to you about washing your equipment . It looks like everything runs and works well and that's the important part. Is there a limit to how much moisture is in the corn if you go right from the field to the feed grinder ? Thanks
Thanks for the comments as for moisture this is very dry and sense it’s winter and cold we don’t have to worry about mold or spoilage going straight to the grinder in the summer you definitely want it as dry as possible not exactly sure what the % would need to be
We will cross that road when we get there 😂 but we do have some design ideas for building our own out of a combine but we still have a lot of years of finding parts for these I hope
Working tractors look great we are feeding cows and farming here not going to a parade people want to run there mouths maybe they should pay for the restoration or shut up one or the other.
Im ready to buy a grinder mixer. I run 100+ goats, a few cows and raise outdoor pigs in Nebraska. Id like to get a kelly ryan or schuler wagon so i could feed ground hay too. Good to see you guys doing it with what you got.
Definitely worth getting a one to make your own feed with all that glad you enjoyed how’s the outdoor pig market that’s something we have been told we should get into because some people will pay a lot more for pasture dirt raised pork
@@knappfarms i sell a few every month for $1/ lb off the farm for fresh butchers. Mostly cuban and mexicans, some guys buy them for deer mixing meat. Found a guy buying a pot load evey 3 or 4 weeks thats $.10-20 over market for them. Im just starting to get feeders that meet his program, so i wont be selling any commercially till spring. I was breeding mulefoots, they are great eating and will grow on nothing, but you cant give em away at a sale barn.
The market we would have is we sell all our beef as freezer beef by the 1/4 so a lot of those customers would probably also buy a 1/2 a hog every year just have to determine if it economical or if we should just get more cattle I like being diverse though
@@knappfarms you cant beat direct sales. If you have the customers and the butcher already lined up, rasing them is the easy part. When grain is cheap its nice to be able to feed more of it. I dont raise any corn but i buy it at like $.25 over cash price from a neighbor to grind it. Saves me money and saves him hauling it. I get a few bushels a week of spent grain from a local brewery too for free. That, some ground corn, dgs and hog concentrate makes for pretty cheap feed and they do great on it.
Yeah I’m definitely all about using as much of our crops for feed as we can hardly worth it to haul in most years but our big problem at the moment is storage
Same reason you need salt vital for body function but it’s more important in there life of grazing grass sometimes it helps neutralize toxins grass can produce from rapid weather changes
Another interesting one! Yeah, my Dad taught me young to slowly engage things like that, like the cutter blade drive belt and the clutch on our Snapper riding mower. When I hear neighbors just slamming their mower in with the belt screaming in pain, I cringe. But of course, as a kid I did my share of popping the clutch on it to do wheelies. 😃
One time I wanted to do a huge one, so I let it roll backward down an incline, then popped it while in 5th gear (5-speed). I swear that thing was 45° up in the air. I had no desire to do that again.
Keep doing what you're doing I'm 72 farmed all my life still farming enjoy your videos
Keep on farming sir!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed hopefully I get to farm for as long as you have and you getting to keep doing what you enjoy for many more years
I love picking ear corn. Or even harvesting with a combine. Brings peace to the soul
Definitely one of my favorite jobs on the farm is combining only thing I like better is working cattle without other people around 😂
@@knappfarms yes I've helped friends work cows. He gets stressed about it.
Keep doing what you’re doing I’m 62 and have enjoyed all of your videos for the past I guess six months or so, thank you
Thank you for your continued support I hope I am smart enough and lucky enough to do this my whole life and eventually build this up to live off of
That's some good looking corn
Great video
Its neet to watch the older equipment work, keep up the great work.
Love the video, grew up on that equipment, great way of life. My children and I still use old equipment (more reliable than the new crap)
And when it does break you can fix it with a welder and a wrench you don’t have to call in someone with a computer and a collage degree

We should definitely be better off then we are just the operation was ran poorly hopefully we can build it back up
Good videos older equipment is paid for, turning a profit Farmer to Farmer stay safe out there. 👍
Who could get tired of picking ear corn or grinding feed? Not this cat!
Doc
People love the videos of ear corn and anything involving it so your definitely right
Is it bad I have watched almost everyone of your videos and I still keep watching them over and over
Yep. Great video!

Yeah if somehow someone manages to keep all there equipment clean they couple definitely be making more money working instead of washing
From the looks of the cows there, that feed mix is working really well. Keep up the good work there.
Thank you

Subscribed, from southeast manitoba. Vesser Cattle Co sent me. Love the content. I can relate, I'm 40 and most of my equipment is older then I am.
Lol yeah we only have 1 piece of equipment that’s younger then me it’s our new round baler 2001 model in a 99 model lol
Great video! It's been fun watching you grow the channel! Thanks and "have a good one"👍🇺🇸
Thanks for always following along

Neat Process!
Thanks
Makes good feed!!
A little junk lol... You should see all the chunks of stalks in our feed, custom blend mostly pelleted, will rolled corn mixed in, plenty of thumb sized chunks of stalks mixed in it🙄
Yup just filler for the cows they eat less hay that way 😂

Lol exactly if I have them all fancy I won’t want to use them the way we do so I need another 560 now so I can have a nice one and a using one
I like the reliability of the 350-series New Holland grinders!
It has been the greatest grinder I’ve ever used just absolutely eats that corn up fast and like you said reliable never had a serious problem with it just general chains and stuff you would have wear out on anything
Love old Farmalls on the mill for soft starting PTO also. 560 on the Farmhand mill the first 20 years of my life. Been 450 on it the last 25 years.
Got that right can’t beat the old Farmalls the 560 might be my all time favorite
Came over from Dirt Grain and Steel. Looks like you have a great thing going.
Thanks we make the old stuff work hope you enjoy the channel

Great video again, showing how you keep them cows so healthy. Surprised you have any spare time for huntin and fishin !
I actually missed out on the last day of rifle season for deer doing this but I still have late archery
Good video the tractor and the grinder look clean anough to me they run that's what matters most to me lol ...
Yup spend the time on greasing and maintenance not washing and waxing
Great video, we do ear corn and grind it for feed. We have 2 gehl grinders.
I’ll have to check out your channel as well
Thanks

Haters always gonna hate!! I bet they're corpo farmers or city folk. You work for you... Nobody else. Be proud!🇺🇸
Plus.... Those northern plains guys only have to work 4 months a year. I'd love a 4-5 month farming season and 6-7 months to clean and fix my shit.
Thanks for the comments as for moisture this is very dry and sense it’s winter and cold we don’t have to worry about mold or spoilage going straight to the grinder in the summer you definitely want it as dry as possible not exactly sure what the % would need to be
I would recommend feeds and feeding book by Morrison. A old read but dad called it the farmers bible.
I’ll have to check it out always looking to expand knowledge
Good job sir keep up the good work
Thanks for watching will do
Lets go Brandon!!!!!!!!
Whatcha gonna do when the last corn picker wears out and can't be fixed? Love that old stuff but it can't last forever.
We will cross that road when we get there 😂 but we do have some design ideas for building our own out of a combine but we still have a lot of years of finding parts for these I hope
We only picked ear corn, feed almost all of it to the dairy heard
I hope to one day have enough cattle to use all our crops in feed that would definitely be the way to turn some profit
Just out of curiosity what does a grinder mixer like that cost new or for a good used one?
I feel like the guys that want you to scrub the tractor probably couldn't operate one
Probably not but they are more then welcome to come and powerwash and wax until there hearts are content lol
Working tractors look great we are feeding cows and farming here not going to a parade people want to run there mouths maybe they should pay for the restoration or shut up one or the other.
Lol right I’ve got hundreds of comments on what we need to do with our equipment but zero offers to come put in the work thanks for watching
Dang it. The PTO shaft on the picker looks seriously long.
Probably 10 foot long 😂 maybe a little more

Indiana north west area
What size screen are you using?
I believe it is 3/4 inch
How fast are u going?
I believe I can get up to 5-6 mph
Are you the only that grinds corn?
Yeah my little brother helps grind sometimes but I grind all the feed my older brother feeds it to the feedlot
And what not
