Sad song. Lost friends to drugs, suicides, drinking, cancer, and accidents. Some good people just mess up. This song brings it all back. What a band! And a shout out to Hoyt Axton. Steppenwolf nailed this song. All time favorite band of mine. Truth for today.
I bought this 45 rpm in 1971 for 76 cents. I loved this song the first time I heard it. When I turned 11 in June 1970 my dad took me to the record store to buy “Steppenwolf Live” for me. The lyrics and live recording of “Monster” should be in the Smithsonian Museum. Learning that John Kay never knew his father who died in WWII fighting the Nazis, and escaped to the west through barbed wire and search lights at the age of five with his mother, his love of freedom being the basis of his description of America in history in the song as in his words having, “too much worth saving to let everything go down the drain” by getting together to “bring about change,” indicates his depth as an artist. To have had the image of a tough guy, when interviewed he shows himself to be a very gentle and thoughtful man. At 62 I still love John Kay and Steppenwolf!
I'm 70 and ALL my best +oldest friends are gone now, many from "dying slow" God how I miss them, but I'm still here for a reason❤Just like he says about losing some to drugs, others to after effects of Viet Nam--🌹he spoke to my soul🙏 Always was a beautiful song 🎵
I have lost so many friends to drugs, alcohol, suicide...this song always brings tears to my eyes...and breaks my heart. I'm from the '60's...saw it all happen, watched America and life change...the hope that the change would bring peace to our streets and unity to our Nation, has played out. Steppenwolf was a great band, and John Kay a great leader for them. This tune, I believe was written by Hoyt Axton. Only those of us who have lived in the shadows of addiction can truly know the depth of it's words. R.I.P. to all who left us that way.
John Kay is vastly underrated! The only air play you hear is Magic Carpet Ride and Born to be Wild. He had many many other great, well written songs and he was a very good social observer that wrote lyrics like a wise mentor.. I've seen him three times live and he and his group never fails to please!
During 1986- 1988 I was hanging with a Pretty Wild Girl, who did a lot of Dummy Dust and Smack. One day she played this song over and over in the Car. She told me that this song would remind me of Her later in Life. She was right, I do think of Her when I hear the song, and it brings Tears to my Eyes, because she still has a Special Place in my Heart, even though I haven't seen her since 1988. Hope you are okay and doing well Annette
I'm 64, LA born and Steppenwolf was my first, possibly second concert at the Santa Monica Civic John Kay was Always intensely political, sexy, healthy, and by now just plain lucky And it appears he's been married to the same woman all his life...how impressive is that ?!! One of my early heros- still Love you John !! fellow German...!
Snow blind friends...Hoyt Axton was one of the greatest songwriters nobody ever heard of..the No No song.Never Been to Spain..Joy to the World. The Pusher...John Kay had an ear for and paid tribute in song like few others to some of the lesser known singers
You know John Kay's history....born in Germany blind his Mom took him thru the wall. Went to Canada...met wife up there and I was so lucky to see him in Fresno one year on my birthday. Still amazed how he would throw mic up and catch it. Great book to read.
Yup, I flew the unfriendly skies too ... But for the Grace of God, I am here to listen to it with you Brother ! What started out as sooooo much fun nearly ended in complete disaster .... GOD BLESS THOSE OF US THAT WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO DISEMBARK ....
What more to say about this band. One of the greatest bands ever and not just for coining the phrase heavy metal. Just a sumptuous catalog of blues inflected rock. May they rock for 50 more years
John Kay had a great voice, and he admired Hoyt Axton's songwriting ,the ''Pusher and ''Snowblind Friend ''.because he recorded both . A great paean to the lost generation of the 60's and 70's.
Listen to Hoyt Axton sing -500 miles. He & his brother actually found Elvis at a fair & got their Mom Mae Boren Axton. She wrote Heartbreak Hotel based on a obituary. Elvis fell in love with it. She later regretted introducing him to Col. Parker. He was an illegal immigrant which is why Elvis never went worldwide. The other day he was in Smokey w/ Fess Parker on one channel & 28 Days was ending with Joy to the World. 💙
There was always more to Steppenwolf than Born to be Wild. Listen to the opening track of the album Monster....very apt for today, even though it was written in 1969!
R and R HOF is a Joke, like Rolling Stone Mag, total piece of sheeet. Thesew guys lyrics killed way more than so many bands, of course their message is not dope ok an dlibs ok so they are not in HOF. HOF is a joke, does anyone even know if it exists...?
This song hits home. The David Allan coe cover got me. I’m snow blind right now but songs like this give me hope. Anyone els out there who have addictions it’s never to late, no matter what you’ve done or what you’ve been through... god has you and you can change when willing to! that’s real shit
I first heard this powerful song in 1975. I left a lump in my throat then as it does right now. So simple, yet so powerful. The plight of a some one blinded by an addictive drug. Someone who needs help since he can't help him or herself out of the gutter. Literally laying on the street, but passed over by his friend and left there, possibly to die. We must move with compassion to do what we can to help our fellow man.
Steppenwolf was the first real rock band I saw. (69) John Kaye on a Dan Armstrong. Blew me away. More weed and wine than I had ever seen. Not dissing Paul Revere and the Raiders. They were actually very good.
Great live performance. So soulful. So poignant Just wanted to say no one could ever beat Jerry Edmonton's drumming. His syncopated drum cadences in this song found on Steppenwolf 7.
when people talk about stepped wolf most only know born to be wild and magic carpet ride but god they made so much great music, they were my favorite band since I first heard them in the sixties
I listen to another version, but this one is much better quality. The one I saw was live but it was from the 60's. This has a much better sound. Love the song. One of John Kay's finest piece of work.
Hi, 'Snowblind Friend' first released in 1970 on the 'Steppenwolf 7' album, and 'The Pusher(1968) were actually written by Hoyt Axton. Axton wrote many fine songs which were never known until covered by bands like, 'Steppenwolf, 'Three Dog Night', 'The Kingston Trio' , 'John Denver' , and even 'Ringo Starr'. His mother 'Mae Axton' actually co-wrote Elvis Presley's mega hit "Heartbreak Hotel" released 1956. The songs, The Pusher, and Snowblind Friend are said to partly reflect his own negative experiences with cocaine addiction. Great lyrics that hit close to home for (too) many people and friends!!! RIP, Hoyt Axton (1999), Mae Axton (1997)
he said he wanted heaven ...but prayin was too slow...........THEY DON'T WRITE GREAT SONGS LIKE THIS ANYMORE. I LOVE JOHN's VOICE. Can't wait to see them on tour 2015

The promotion expected a small crowd of no more than 500 people outdoors at the fairgrounds... 3,000 showed up. When they played Magic Carpet Ride / Born To Be Wild I thought the bleachers were going to collapse. Great show, great crowd of 2 generations of Steppenwolf fans... lots of kids there that night from Chico State, they were in diapers in 1968... but they grew up right and they were having a good time too...
Rip! All to my friends that have gone on that last trip! Without you it been a real bummer, you missed so much! Or is it us that have missed so much? Hoyt Axton
Song was written about a guitar player in Hoyt's band that John befriended, never said exactly who he was out of deference to his family.
Yeah, really, how can that be? They were a defining band- and not only that, they were a great band musically- big chops, great writing, raw.
John's Cildhood aside, the greatest song of its kind.
