Dumb asses ruined what was to be a tribute to great players that helped change Rock into the force it was meant to be & now those that are in there have to share it with nobody's , it makes no sense & if they finally got john in there the main line up which did change many times should be there as well . George's voice sounds quite like early Rod Stewart, especially on the studio album mix. When I first heard this I went looking on the album sleeve for Stewart's name as a special guest.

My very 1st LP was Steppenwolf Monster when it came out in 1969. In 1970 i got my first drum set and Jerry Edmonton was my very 1st drumming influence. About a year later Don Brewer became the 2nd influence. Jerry was a great groove/pocket drummer. If you listen to his bass drum work you will hear it. His fills were perfect for Steppenwolfs music.
My twin brother learned to play by listening to Jerry. When we were teenagers, he let his hair grow long like Jerry had his and he even got a pair of glasses to match. I played bass and really let my hair grow but I looked more like Geezer Butler than George. We played the snot out of every Steppenwolf and GFRR song we listened to. I am not sure but I believe that this posted video program was the same one broadcasted on the PBS TV network here in the states. A special program Album of the month showcasing the popular recording artist of the time. When I got wind of Steppenwolf was to be featured I contacted some of my cousins who lived down the street. Together with my sister and brother we all piled into my bedroom to watch the show on my small black and white 19'" tv. Everybody enjoyed seeing and hearing Steppenwolf perform and agreed what I had been telling them for a few years. These guys were great.
Maxoman427 Yes indeed, this was one of the "Faberge' Album Of The Month" programs. That info was in the longer original intro of this video. That part was very trashy and garbled so I removed it to prevent people from thinking the entire video was equally bad. Think I saw it on the original air date also (seems like that was a Saturday afternoon here on the east coast) but did not remember which network it was shown on. Thanks for the comment and memory jolt.
Kayodleman Thanks for the reply and confirmation that has reassured me that some of my past memories appear to be intact. Smokin all that good natural herb back then did not completely wipe out all my brain cells.. LOL!! Even though this show was aired about 45 years ago I never forgot that broadcast performance. I do remember that here on the East Coast where I live in NJ it was shown on channel 13 on a Saturday afternoon. ? How did you get access to this performance video. I have been waiting for years since joining YT for somebody to post this.I am still waiting to see if someone will post a video of Steppenwolf when they first performed "Move Over" on TV . Maybe it was on The Ed Sullivan show. That was also a Hell of a performance and our first time seeing the addition of Larry Byrom on lead guitar who replaced Michael Monarch.
Maxoman427 Got this on a Betamax video in the early 80's, either bought or swapped something for it via Goldmine magazine classifieds. Always good to realize some memory cells are still firing for sure. Vaguely remembered seeing Larry playing a banjo on a clip of SNOWBLIND FRIEND shot in a recording studio and shown on TV somewhere back then. Was glad to see it show up online a few years ago. Larry on the banjo was so odd I guess that's why it stuck in the memory.
George Biondo's backing vocals added so much to the sound. Reminds me of Jethro Tull when John Glascock was playing bass and singing up a storm and how it sounded so much better than just Ian Anderson alone. Not that Anderson and Kay aren't both legendary vicalists, I just love good background harmony ya know?
Larry Byrom is playing rhythm guitar in this promo, so the lead guitar track (or more) must be on tape. Still a great snapshot of the best Steppenwolf lineup to exist.
There was a girl who used to dance on the bar every time anyone played Steppenwolf on the juke box. We used to call her Foggy Mental Breakdown, because it fit her to a T. No idea what ever became of her. I'm not gonna tell y'all her name out of respect, but she was a fun party girl, she was at my house a few times, leave it at that. Kind of cool if it was. Wish they would come back to Kentucky!
This one and the debut are the most solid. The others are more uneven, but all have their moments. I made a mix CD-R of my cherry-picked Wolf Faves, and that's what I mostly listen to by them.
Man! I am jealous of you. I was to young to go venturing off to concerts at the time. I do remember in the Summer of 1969 while with my family on vacation down the shore in Wildwood, NJ. I saw a poster advertising that Steppenwolf was going to be appearing on the boardwalk the following weekend. I begged my Mom to let me attend but she was not having it. (1) because it was a two hour drive from where we lived. (2) I was just a kid with a paper route for a job..That would have been a hell of a bicycle ride for me...LOL!!!
Yeah, well this was my very first concert, thanks to a great older brother, met them all after the show and I asked, 'wheres Michael', and John Kay said, he split.....lol
Man! Now I am really jealous. You got to see and meet those guys in their prime. I always did and still like the Michael Monarch sound of Steppenwolf. I liked all of the lead guitar players but was not too much into the Bobby Cochran sound. He wasn't a bad guitarist just did not do it for me. Some fans actually think he was the best lead of all. John,Goldy and Jerry were the only guys keeping me interested enough to shell out money to buy their vinyl outputs.
I worked at a theater in fort Worth Texas and we had these guys booked but it turned out that my manager was a con man and so the show did not go on I've always felt terrible about him but the crew was very understanding p it's just sad that we didn't get to put the show on😢
Best sound of the seventies, Bill Cooper was an extraordinary sound engineer! Same kind of sound and mix for Three Dog Night, Iron Butterfly (Metamorphosis), Souther Hillman Furay Band. Gems!
Great song: guitar, lyrics and meaning. Thanks for posting. Steppenwolf 7 was my first album. This song reminds me of what I think while on the Appalachian Trail, looking down into the valley. Does anyone know where to get the guitar music for this song? The instructions may be on You Tube?
'7'. One of my all-time favorites. If I was stuck on an island with only this album, that's OK. Lotta weed and cheap wine back in the day. Great times.
Right on Dave. This is so damn heavy. John Kay exudes rock and roll to me, vocally and appearance-wise. Second only to Jim Morrison. This is perhaps the best version of the band and that is saying a lot cause I love Monarch and Nick, as well. Thanks for the shout out
Oh yeah! That's some good taste there, my favorite band since I was 10 too and still my number 1. I didn't hear a band yet that got me Steppenwolf did!

Agreed! Bad ass bass player

When they first began,
Michael Monarch was a
17 year old guitar prodigy.
Absolutely right!
Wow ... Steppenwolf was a reflection of their time.
Now this is what i call music!
7 was without a doubt, their best. My favorite for sure even though I like Monster and Birthday Party.
This is one of my all time favorite songs

I worked at a theater in fort Worth Texas and we had these guys booked but it turned out that my manager was a con man and so the show did not go on I've always felt terrible about him but the crew was very understanding p it's just sad that we didn't get to put the show on😢
Sounds like Kay's mike goes dead at the end of the song, he is still singing but you can only hear George singing!
30 years ago a message in song Did we only hear the music ?
great mushrooms??
Ampeg Bass Guitar
Seen him playing live with a Gibson EB-3
Best sound of the seventies, Bill Cooper was an extraordinary sound engineer! Same kind of sound and mix for Three Dog Night, Iron Butterfly (Metamorphosis), Souther Hillman Furay Band. Gems!
SW7 is their best in my book! Wish they would remaster it.
Don't know where the heck you got this but just an awesome view of one of the all-time great rock bands. Thanks.
Glad you found it, thanks for the comment.
Again just awesome K.
Agreed! My long time first favorite band! started when I was 9 or 10 and haven't given up yet!
Your still my heart
great vid.....ty
Great
pretty dope track..
I have the cd, Steppenwolf 7.
Thanks , I was getting worried
Tight.
You can't deny the Fab five.
It appears John's microphone went down the last few seconds.
