  • #Thrangu Rinpoche recounts, in Tibetan, how the changing condition in Tibet led to the 16th #Karmapa deciding to escape the country. Rinpoche's translator, David Karma Choepel, then provides the commentary in English. Recorded at Vajra Vidya Institute in Sarnath, India. #buddhism
The closing unit has Traleg Rinpoche narrating a song of prediction written by the 16th Karmapa in 1941. The corresponding visuals are a series of paintings by Nicholas Roerich, which are used with permission from the Roerich Museum in New York City. Music by Ravenna Michalsen.

The 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981), was the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Lhatse, Tibet, into a noble family. At the age of four, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 15th Karmapa by the Sakya and Nyingma lineages. He received his monastic education at Tsurphu Monastery, the seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
In 1959, the Karmapa fled Tibet during the Chinese invasion and settled in Rumtek, Sikkim, India. He established Rumtek Monastery as his new residence and began to teach and write extensively. He also traveled widely to teach and spread the Dharma.
Thrangu Rinpoche (1933-2023) was a renowned master of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Recognized as the ninth incarnation of the Thrangu Tulku lineage, he was a prolific scholar, author, and teacher. Rinpoche's vast knowledge and deep realization of the Dharma were complemented by his compassionate and engaging teaching style. He established numerous monasteries and Dharma centers around the world, tirelessly spreading the teachings of the Buddha to benefit all beings. His legacy is one of wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to the spiritual path.
Thrangu Rinpoche's full name and title was the Very Venerable Ninth Khenchen Thrangu Tulku, Karma Lodrö Lungrik Maway Senge. The academic title Khenchen denotes great scholarly accomplishment (English-language analogues include the titles Distinguished Professor and Academic Fellow), and the term Rinpoche ("Precious" or "Precious One") is a Tibetan devotional title which may be accorded to respected teachers and exemplars.

I am sure that Translator does a great job when it comes to dharma talks but here the subject is informal where the cultural differences and local place names come into play. It is the same case with the monk translator( Geshe Dorji Damdul) of HHDL . So I mean no disrespect but any native speaker can see his strengths and weaknesses.🙏🙏. If I am in his place I am sure to perform much much worse than him

You clearly don’t speak Tibetan. David Choepel is one the best and he translates for many high lamas

      Please add to:
2:33 Many practitioners were killed, incarcerated and their lifetime wasted
3.10 ( he couldnt translate this question properly in Tibetan. It is funny how he uses honorific term for the coming of Red army)
9.08 lyrics of that gurma song is:
"Where would the vulture and I go then?
Vulture would go to the zenith of the sky
I would go to India" ( "nga Tsho" is used to denote "I"...which can indirectly mean "we" )
