- The plaintiff says she hired the defendant, a contractor, to remodel her bathroom, but he didn’t know what he was doing. She claims he left a mess, so she’s suing him for what it will cost to fix all the issues. The defendant says the plaintiff’s landlord wouldn’t let him in to finish the job, so he owes nothing.

I think they nailed it in the beginning. He is a handyman. Not a licensed plumber or a carpenter. I'm not surprised she was disappointed after trying to do this on the cheap. If you are going to use a handyman, get a list of references for similar work.

Yeah I’ve lived in plenty of apartment complexes and this is the first I’m hearing of a tenant seeking out their own contractor
Never heard of any tenant trying to remodel the place the pay rent at.
It was likely cosmetic.
Make sure the contactor is licensed, bonded and insured! With a detailed scope of work.

Don't group them ALL together because there are a lot of guys that do excellent work. And some of them even clean up after themselves but you have to get the more expensive guys for that to happen. My sister always tips each guy $50 and if she needs them again they remember the tip. A tip shouldn't be an incentive to do good work the next time around but it sure is good insurance.

I see these situations on the local news constantly. Always go with a licensed contractor and verify them with the ROC (registrar of contractors)

This show taught me to ONLY DO BUSINESS with vendors who use itemized paperwork for customer transactions. That tells me they're serious.

I'm in a similar situation right now. An incorrect pipe was installed not to code in my main bathroom by a licensed contractor and now he doesn't want to take responsibility for the water damage to my family room below the bathroom. This guy was recommended by my realtor at that! UGH!
I think people /judges focus too much on the license or not question, I’ve seen plenty of these that they are licensed and the person gets screwed. Sometimes people are like omg you hired an unlicensed person?
I do handyman type work. Being called a handyman automatically gets you profiled into seeming like your character and work would be on this guys level. With that said I would lose every dollar I planned to make and go in the hole before I could walk out of that poor lady's house. Alot of guys see money and have a hard time admitting what work they're capable of and what they're not. That quick dollar attached to shitty work will get you the reputation you deserve. It will cost alot more then he ever planned to make on this job down the road. Also people need to realize cheap work gets you poor quality. People will expect the best product but get the guy who will work for a 12 pack and a bag of roll ups. It doesn't equate.

Saying "drywall wasn't a part of it" is a crock too - shower remodels ALWAYS include drywall if needed. I saw NO waterproofing, the tub faucet was wiggling which can stress and Crack the pipe in the wall so that shows it wasn't secured properly either.
He's not licensed or insured, which makes me even MORE leery!
Sometimes, it's cheaper to spend more money. Period. The landlord is completely out of pocket for having the tenant to hire a contractor. Plaintiff was taken advantage of all around.

Douglas seems like a real nice guy and obviously he and the judge have a good working relationship. But something I always wonder…..on Judge Judy, for example, the bailiff seems to almost stand at attention, ready to intervene between the 2 parties, if necessary. In contrast, Douglas seems so relaxed, leaning on the side of the bench, laughing, very attune to the case. Just wondering if there is some sort of protocol usually.

The true benefit to renting is that if ANYTHING needs to be fixed all you have to do is call your landlord. Dont have to borrow any money, use a credit card, or look for contractors. Just having a baby is not a defense for being stupid LOL
