Promix Performance Comparison

  • In a previous video I uncompressed a Promix Compressed Pack to see how it compared in price and volume to some inexpensive competitors. In this video I'll compare the growth results of these three and also see if hydrating the Promix causes it to expand. The results here are interesting, in a future video I'll do a similar growth comparison to some expensive competitors.

    Thanks for the video I used pro-mix for my current plant and it seems to be doing amazing but wasn't really sure because I did not have anything to compare it with but I am confident in it now. Great video!

    I have been using Pro Mix for over 15 years and I won’t buy anything else! I went through some junk potting mix the first few years I started gardening until I landed on the pro mix and I’m sticking with it

    • @Wisconsin_Gardener
      @Wisconsin_Gardener 9 місяців тому

      Do you fertilize with it? Add compost? Because by itself there isn’t enough nutrients to sustain a plant to harvest.

    • @rosemarythyme8595
      @rosemarythyme8595 9 місяців тому

      @@Wisconsin_Gardener yes that’s why I use this particular potting soil because the fertilizer depends on which vegetable plant I’m growing and that’s why I like it because I get to choose what I put into the soil for optimal growth specific to each plant.
      I only grow organically and that’s why I like having control over what goes into the soil.
      There are so many natural good organic ingredients that you can add to the soil that enhance growth. I never use any synthetic fertilizers ever.
      I have a worm bin, and add worm castings to everything I plant.
      When I first started gardening it was to be able to feed my son’s healthy food. I was very discouraged because I didn’t think I could afford to garden like my all my friends could. That’s what brought me to learning how to make my own potting mixes.
      I just looked up what each plant specifics were, and started making my own fertilizers specific to what each plant needed.
      My plants fruited so prolifically that I had enough to sell and give away after feeding myself and my son’s.💕

    Thanks for making this follow up video. I have used promix before and have had amazing results. I recently bought several bags of promix again and I was wondering if the price on promix was justified or if I should find something cheaper, but I’m glad I found your video comparison to reassure me that I made a great purchase. Thanks (:

    Wow! Amazing difference. I grow microgreens on a weekly basis so seed starting germination is key. Use an organic select miracle grow but I will buy promix.

    I would love to see you do something like this with Espoma Organic instead of Pro Mix, and then a final battle 🤓

      I just tried a comparison with some other higher priced potting mixes but I think the batch of seeds were bad so I have to restart it. There will be more comparisons :)

    So does the pro mix red pack from Walmart contain fertilizer? I'm thinking about mixing in a pound of osmocote and using for outdoor impatiens in containers. Should last whole season. Thanks for video!

    • @GardeningSolutions
      @GardeningSolutions  2 роки тому +1

      I don't think it does, the slow release osmocote would probably be a great idea :)

    Just clarifying that the Promix being referred to is from Walmart and is the Premier Tech (Red Bag) Promix Premium Moisture Potting Mix Compressed Soil. Ive been interested in the compressed as well as expanding mixes that Walmart carries and there's three different ones I found online and in my area. The Red Bag as I mentioned (Walmart site online specs say this is for indoor use and not for garden or raised beds...bummer), The Black and Yellow (also Premier Tech, Organic version for garden and raised beds) and the White bag (Expert Gardeners Organic Expanding Soil). I am an Espoma fan but looking of course for more affordable alternatives. From my understanding, the Walmart compressed ProMix seems to be labeled as so referring to it being in a "compressed recyclable" plastic bagging, and not because the soil is expandable. The Expanding Soil is in fact the type that does expand with water.

      Catherine, are we looking at the same mix? Here's a link: www.walmart.com/ip/PRO-MIX-Premium-Moisture-Potting-Mix-2-Cu-ft-Compressed-Soil/325675412
      Right in the description it says "Ideal for indoor and outdoor container planting, repotting or seed starting". I've been using this with outdoor potting and now in my Earthboxes and it works great :)

    Nice experiment. To reduce costs, I wonder if "cutting" the promix with cheaper soil would get similar results.

    • @GardeningSolutions
      @GardeningSolutions  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't tries that as a controlled experiment but I do end up mixing with whatever I have on hand. The Promix really is pretty inexpensive though.

      I ran a side by side using ProMix and some more expensive mixes that contained mycorrhiza, however I think I got a bad bunch of seeds as only a few even attempted to sprout. This process takes quite a bit of time and I had to restart everything. There will be another comparison, it's just taking a while since I had to start over.

    All your plants need nitrogen. Promix is inert.
