Wow. What am embarrassing intro. I gotta edit these down more. 😂 Thanks for watching! Edit: Actually, the whole thing is embarrassing. I just LOVE this band.
I came to the conclusion that this is my favourite Smiths song. But it’s hard to say, because every time I start into a Smiths binge I find I like all different ones. But when I come back after not listening to them for a while I always remember that this one is the best. I wonder why that is? Oh well, I guess I’ll just never know. Morrissey sure did understand melancholy, didn’t he?
Special song and tastefully done - this one is twinned with I won’t share you - for me. Vocal here is off the scale. And the lyrics and the strum and bass drums - as always!!❤
This is one of those Smith's songs that creeps up on you with time on how much you love it. It's not flashy or overly dynamic, but those beautiful Johnny chord sequences and Mozza's classic high notes just infuse into your brain after a while. It's a perfect song for listening to in bed before going to sleep and letting it lull you into unconsciousness.
For me Well I Wonder is possibly the greatest unrequited love song ever written. I was a teenager when The Smiths were around and as a shy, reserved boy the timing was perfect. This song spoke to me as I struggled with trying and failing to overcome my shyness and approach girls who I worshipped from afar but probably didn't even know I existed. I would indeed half die as we passed... but did they even see me? And yes I would be 'gasping, dying, but somehow still alive' as I prepared myself to try to speak to them... Not to ask them out but just in the hope that they would 'keep me in mind'. This song hit me deeply and Morrissey's yearning, desperate plea to 'Please keep me in mind' at that point spoke to me perhaps more than any other line he ever delivered.
As a 40 year Smithsonian, I am so glad I found your channel. Your reactions are very entertaining, and I really like how enthused you are about the band. You have a unique approach, which really resonates with me. I hope you do every song, though that would take a while as they have many, which are not all on studio albums. Please do Suffer Little Children and Pretty Girls Make Graves. Because I know you are dying to know, my story goes like this....Was exposed to The Smiths in 1984, and was lucky enough to see them live in 1985. They had a Tina Turner impersonator open for them...because duh. Ok, that's enough prying into my personal life....geez. Ok, bye.
"He can say a lot with few word." You are welcome! lol More!! I really do think you should do either Unhappy Birthday (Bass, depressing lyrics, and shows off Morrissey's sense of humour) or Paint a Vulgar Picture, for very similar reasons to be fair 😁 Loving these videos, The Smiths have been my favourite band since I was a teenager in the 80's! It's a life long love. Oh, and listen to Vicar in A Tutu of course!
You brightened up my evening having chosen this gem of a track by The Smiths. It's one of their less well-known songs for some obscure reason. There's something about this wistful song that brings together all of the best elements of The Smiths. Call it quintessential. Morrissey's vocals - so smooth, haunting and affecting. Top tune! What next..... well i wonder (no pun) whether you'll get to The Boy with the Thorn in His Side? The official video is a gem too, as they all look so darned handsome, with a bit of a bromance thing happening.
It's not uncommon to become obsessed with The Smiths when you first start listening to them. So many kids I knew in college became huge fans once they heard them. It truly is a timeless sound that sounds like nothing else.
Absolutely love your smiths reactions I'm so glad you love them. As a life long fan this band meant everything to me growing up. I've watched all your reactions and a song I think you would really love is a song off there first album called I don't owe you anything, it's got Morrissey Marr and more importantly rouke at some of there best, it may not be a really popular one but it's a great song. Enjoy
My 2nd favourite SMITHS track, only bettered by “I know it’s over” in my opinion. I used to listen to the Smiths on the school playground in the 80s when others listened to chart rubbish. My all time favourite band .. they never age..
There are still so many excellent Smiths songs for you to discover and I'll enjoy watching you doing so. If I had to recommend a song for your next reaction to this band, it would be "Still ill" (the version on the "Hatful of hollow" album).
This song bewitched me on first listen almost 40 years ago. I loved it then and I love it still. It is simply crucial to my very being. It is just another wonderful example of why The Smiths continue to be the band of my life and why they can never, ever be replaced. So glad you are enjoying these songs. Your reaction is just a delight. Thank you. X
Great reaction! The smiths recorded just over 70 songs in their four years as a band. Everything they ever recorded, has been put on some compilation album since their split. And yet, apart from their cover songs and instrumentals, their are very few bad songs in their repertoire. As for recommendations: there is a good quality live version available of 'Still Ill', another classic one. 'Handsome devil', 'Girl afraid' are others with a great bassline. For good lyrics, you can't go wrong but 'Ask', 'Shoplifters' or 'Cemetary Gates' stand out but everyone will give you other ones. They really touched a lot of people on a personal level. They even made a song about that (Rubber Ring). There is an interview with Andy Rourke (several years after the split) with a little girl that you will certainly like!
Hi Lauren! Some other great Smiths songs for you to do, in no particular order: Still Ill William It Was Really Nothing Cemetry Gates The Boy with the Thorn in His Side Handsome Devil You’ve Got Everything Now Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want Nowhere Fast That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore Girlfriend in a Coma
Thanks for all The Smiths reactions👏👏 The Smiths Live version of Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others, Brixton 1986. I wouldn’t mind a reaction to that performance.
Just discovered you lauren...I've loved the smiths since the early days, this is one of my favourite tracks, also my niece debbie lived in salford close to where the band where based.
The Smiths live performance video. “You’ve Got Everything Now” (Derby 83) The Smiths-Charlie’s Bus. Kids TV show. The band accompanies elementary school kids on a field trip to Kew Gardens. It’s hilarious!
Well, independent labels were rapidly established in the late 70,s and by 79 there were hundreds of them, (as listed by zigzag magazine), Rough trade themselves,, (Smith's label) had already distributed albums that broke into the top 20 by 1979 , several years before the signing of the Smiths. That said , the Smiths definitely popularised the 'jangle band's ', sound , probably helped and influenced the by one of the first of that genre to emerge from New Wave which was the mighty Orange Juice.
Re: Morrissey solo, some obvious ones would be Suedehead, Everyday is Like Sunday, Last of the Famous International Playboys, and my personal favorite, You're the One for Me Fatty.
Handsome Devil Cemetery Gates The Hand that Rocks the Cradle Nowhere Fast These are notable ones to react to, but you could pick any of their songs. The Smiths were so good they never became shit
absolute timeless is right description, but you have forgotten to mention the awsome & melodic guitarr parts. It is definitiv one of the top Smiths Songs. Btw. where is the cat???
I can finally stop pestering you for Well I Wonder. Now for That Joke isn't Funny Anymore (also on Meat is Murder). Gene, a 90's UK band, were the nearest to sounding like the Smiths and the music press often referred to them as their successor. Olympian was their biggest hit and one you may like.
Morrissey had a very eclectic taste. And I think the 'Looks like rain' album by Mickey Newbury may have influenced this song. All the songs on it were interspersed by the sounds of falling rain. Newbury had a very plaintive voice and "She even woke me up to say goodbye" sounds like a very Morrissey lyric.
The point you make about Morrissey saying a lot without saying much is absolutely right. I felt that in the earlier days Morrissey wrote poetry whereas later he changed and wrote prose. For me his greatest lyrics were short, simple, poetic and spoke to the soul. Well I Wonder, Please, Please, Please..., How Soon Is Now, Back To The Old House, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore, Last Night I Dreamt... etc. I never liked the lengthy, oddly delivered, sometimes almost spoken lyrics which often seemed to be trying to hard to be funny, meaningful or clever - 'Paint A Vulgar Picture', 'Is It Really So Strange?' etc. By the time I got too 'Late Night Maudlin Street' and 'Bengali in Platforms' on his first solo album he had begun to lose me.
You have more work to do . If you enjoy Morrisseys voice on this album then you might want to leap forward to a later solo album , the wonderful , Vauxhall and I. I'm sure you will be pleased. Cheers, Mike.
Thanks for the reaction. Pretty much every Smiths song is great so viewership will be consistent. I am not a huge fan of the last album due to the fact that it is too "polished". And not a fan of Morrissey's solo material (not even taking into account what a right-wing nutjob he has become)
Have you checked out Echo & the Bunnymen? - it might be your sort of thing. From a similar time to the Smiths, darker music, more 'gothic'. And being from Liverpool they were sort of rivals..... - personally I'd say the first two albums are best, especially Heaven up Here (a masterpiece) but many prefer the later, more poppy and better produced work. Hard to know what to recommend as a starter, so maybe this, first track from the first album, but live, (which I know you like) ua-cam.com/video/L2xEKA0bw9k/v-deo.html
Love all your Smiths stuff, but this has to be my least favourite song of theirs, don't get all the love for it. You should do Rubber Ring - think you'll enjoy the lyrics to that one.
"Well I wonder", one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded in the history of popular music. Absolute perfection.
Yes
Wow. What am embarrassing intro. I gotta edit these down more. 😂
Thanks for watching!
Edit: Actually, the whole thing is embarrassing. I just LOVE this band.
Half a Person, Cemetry Gates, and Still Ill are a must listen 👍

The Smiths just the best of British 🇬🇧
....And you have to hand it to the Mancs. They turn out ace bands.
Real trailblazers, unique and no fillers. The quality and the output in basically about 4 years is insane.
Stretch out and Wait - must listen!
now i wanna listen to the whole album! it is a beautiful song! morriseys solo stuff yeah!
The smiths had this unique ability to blend melancholy and euphoria.
For me Well I Wonder is possibly the greatest unrequited love song ever written.
I was a teenager when The Smiths were around and as a shy, reserved boy the timing was perfect.

Asleep is one of the most depressing songs ever, you`ll love it
😂
And one of the most beautiful! And one of the most heart breaking.
"He can say a lot with few word." You are welcome! lol

the best song by The Smiths, one of the best songs in history
My 2nd favourite SMITHS track, only bettered by “I know it’s over” in my opinion. I used to listen to the Smiths on the school playground in the 80s when others listened to chart rubbish. My all time favourite band .. they never age..
7:45 He can say so much with so few words.
For me if a song sounds good 20 years after it's release that makes it a classic.
Fantastic review of an unbelievable song from a band then 'at the top of their game'.......
People talk about Rourke's heroin habit, but like to gloss over Morrissey's helium abuse.
Well, I wonder how many times his lyric sheets said "".
Indeed, hence the gasping, dying yet still alive lyrics..Kids stay away from helium, balloons and clowns 🤡
There are still so many excellent Smiths songs for you to discover and I'll enjoy watching you doing so. If I had to recommend a song for your next reaction to this band, it would be "Still ill" (the version on the "Hatful of hollow" album).
Still Ill, Girl Afraid and Handsome Devil from Hatful of Hollow album are essential listens.
You're my new favorite channel ❤
I love this whole album, Meat is Murder, but What She Said, this song and the title song are my favorites❤❤
I love this song so much😭
*petting my cat while watching this video and he's smiling at me while the song is playing is pure bliss😭😭
This song bewitched me on first listen almost 40 years ago. I loved it then and I love it still. It is simply crucial to my very being.

Thank YOU for watching! I’m obsessed with this song now, by the way. 😎
@MusicCatsandCoffee haha, not as much as I am...
Suedehead
yes - more gorgeous vocals and cracking vibe.
Yes, and Every Day is Like Sunday.
Johnny Marr usually wrote melodies and chords, later Morrissey add his lyrics in rehearsals. Almost all songs by them was composed like that.
My favourite smiths song.

I remember hearing this song for the first time and your reaction was essentially what my reaction was.

The Smiths live performance video. “You’ve Got Everything Now” (Derby 83)
The Smiths-Charlie’s Bus. Kids TV show. The band accompanies elementary school kids on a field trip to Kew Gardens. It’s hilarious!
The Smiths basically kick started the Indy movement
Well, independent labels were rapidly established in the late 70,s and by 79 there were hundreds of them, (as listed by zigzag magazine),

The Smiths were so good they never became shit
I can safely guarantee “half a person” would be on your favorite playlist
absolute timeless is right description, but you have forgotten to mention the awsome & melodic guitarr parts. It is definitiv one of the top Smiths Songs.
Btw. where is the cat???
Neglecting to mention Johnny is a flaw of mine.
She was probably sleeping. ☺
4:03 Don't worry... We know exactly what you're feeling! :0)
I love your Smiths reactions. One that I keep mentioning, 'Half a Person'.
Appears Otherworldly
Hilarious ❤❤❤❤
Morrissey - Last of the Famous International Playboys or My Love Life
It always rains in Manchester. On a train in the rain.
Hey Lauren, I think you may mean "He's able to say so much with so few words" 😎
Laconic is the word!!
Don't listen to suffer little children, it's really a very loaded lyric
yes, it's a tough one, but nevertheless the melody and minimal production is up my street.
Don't tell anyone, but that's actually the next one I did. 😎
Now you gotta listen to “I don’t owe you anything”
at the end... he horsley cries... :( this song has no live ver. What a unique piece.
Probably my favorite Smiths song, but it's hard to pick one.
So much with so few words.
Morrissey had a very eclectic taste. And I think the 'Looks like rain' album by Mickey Newbury may have influenced this song. All the songs on it were interspersed by the sounds of falling rain. Newbury had a very plaintive voice and "She even woke me up to say goodbye" sounds like a very Morrissey lyric.
it will last right up until you hear Morrissey talk

Yes! Or the audio only.
Ah yes...Norcross GA, circa 89-90. Selena Hembree's favorite band.

I feel bad, she never gets the rockin pop songs. Yes, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed; he claims his sound
so start to react to morrissey-songs please....
yes, Suedehead, November Spawned a Monster
Do some Marr solo stuff too
This and i know its over 😢😢❤
I grew up with the smiths , great diverse band but without Johnny Marr those lyrics would be lost.
Gosh please, do reaction to George Harrioson - Art Of Dying
Thanks for the reaction. Pretty much every Smiths song is great so viewership will be consistent. I am not a huge fan of the last album due to the fact that it is too "polished". And not a fan of Morrissey's solo material (not even taking into account what a right-wing nutjob he has become)
