Keeping ranchers on the land

  • It's something seen across the west...much of the private land that is undeveloped and in its mostly natural state is rangeland for livestock. When a local ranch operation is pressured to sell because of slim profit margins and increasing debt, that land is at risk of being developed by residential or industrial uses, fragmenting the land and waters and habitat for wildlife. It also puts more demand on less sustainable sources of food elsewhere, or flip it to industrialized beef production which does not look after the land with the care that local folks can have.
Keeping local agricultural producers on the land, including the next generation, is a big conversation of "what do we do about it?" There is no single answer, but it will require working together, creative thinking, and talking things out through different individuals and entities. Hear more from Bill Milton and others on this topic in the Central Montana Plains episode of the Life in the Land series www.lifeinthel....
You will find the 35 minute film, which you can screen for free at your workshop, gathering, or classroom, and a series of podcasts including the full conversation with Bill Milton on the Stories for Action podcast series on Apple or Spotify: (podcasts.apple...)
